WINTER / LENT / SPRING 2015
Here at the start of 2015, I encourage you to select one program a month or a couple of offerings
during the seasons of Lent and Easter and mark them on your calendar now. These gatherings or
groups will help us to grow in our faith, to ask questions, to open new doors to learning about our
spirituality, our call/response to discipleship and our relationship with God.
The listing and schedule is available through the following link to our parish website at
www.spsact.org. Also, in our weekly parish bulletin we highlight programs in a timely manner
and encourage registration through the Parish Office, 860-756-4034. Please feel free to pass along
this link and information to friends, colleagues and family members. We envision our Faith
Formation offerings available on a regional level, open to anyone who is interested in the journey
of faith. All are Welcome!
You will notice that with each program we list a “Suggested Offering”. This donation helps us to
cover the costs associated with providing each program (stipend, material, food, etc.). We want our
programs to be available to all and do not want the offering to limit who can attend. Therefore, we
welcome any offering that you are able to make. If your current economic situation limits the
amount you are able to afford, please attend and give what you can. Conversely, if you would like
to make a donation greater than the suggested amount, please know that the funds would be used
to support the overall faith formation opportunities that we offer.
The Adult Faith Formation Ministry works throughout the year planning each semester of
programs and activities. Please feel free to pass along suggestions and ideas for their consideration.

continues throughout the year. Lectio
Divina honors that most basic source of all
real prayer – an interior desire for God. We
seek the presence of the living God by listening – giving the Lord the first word and
letting that word expand our listening. We
create a safe and sacred space to read, contemplate and share what the Gospel reveals
to our hearts.

Need a spiritual boost – an inspirational moment - during the week
to keep going? The NOOMA film series promotes spiritual reflection on our life experiences. It’s simple! The films are short (10-14
minutes in length) but they pack a powerful message. The films
emphasize the teachings of Jesus relating to real life situations. We
will then take some time for individual, one-on-one, and group
sharing as a way to break open their meaning for us. The name
NOOMA comes from a phonetic spelling of the Greek word
"pneuma" which means "spirit", "wind" or "breath".

A poignant look as a family suffers the downward spiral of homelessness. A tight knit family is forced onto the streets of New York
City and into a homeless shelter in this heartfelt film. As they become more desperate this ex-boxer is buoyed up by the prospect of
moving his wife and two children into the relative warmth of a
nearby housing project. But first he will need a miracle.

Romero is a compelling and deeply moving look at the life of Archbishop Oscar Romero who made the ultimate sacrifice in a passionate stand against social injustice and oppression in his country. He
ministered to and advocated for the poor and alienated in El Salvador with courageous, prophetic leadership. The film chronicles the
transformation of Romero from an apolitical, complacent priest to a
committed leader of the Salvadoran people. … a man of God,
forced by the unspeakable events going on around him to take a
stand – a stand that ultimately leads to his assassination in 1980 at
the hands of the military junta as he says Mass. Join us on the 35th
anniversary of his martyrdom on March 24th.

OUR LENTEN-EASTER-PENTECOST JOURNEY: 90 DAYS
On Ash Wednesday we commence a ninety day journey that leads us through the seasons
of Lent and Easter and concludes with the feast of Pentecost. From the prophet Joel we
hear the call to start this journey: “Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole
heart”, and from the disciple Paul in his letter we are encouraged that “now is the
acceptable time” to receive the grace of God. Thus we are welcomed to a journey of
possible transformation.
 How will we enter into these ninety days?
 Will we set aside time for prayer?
 How will we open ourselves up to transformative experiences?
 When we celebrate Pentecost on May 24th will we be different?
Adult Faith Formation Ministry has designed several opportunities during these 90 days to assist us
in making time for God and for entering into these seasons of conversion, reconciliation, renewal and
change.

The Clare Gallery is please to present Intimate Spirits: Photography and Poetry in Conversation, an exhibition by artist and poet
Sister Jo-Ann Iannotti, OP. The exhibition displays both poetry
and photography in concert accenting the power of word and image. The artist wishes to draw viewers into the space between
themselves and the two creative expressions allowing the works to
be “seen,” as well as “read.” This exhibition is free and open to the
public and extends from January 19-March 15, 2015. A reception
will be held on Thursday, March 5th, from 6:30-8:00p.m.

The book of the prophet Isaiah is one of the most important and influential books of the Hebrew Scriptures. In the second section of
the book (Isaiah 40-55), written just before the end of the
Babylonian Exile, four passages, commonly called Servant Songs
(Isa 42:1-4; 49:1-7; 50:4-11; and 52:13-53:12), bring into focus the role of
the servant. The prophet does not disclose the identity of this figure: Is it Israel? Israel in exile? The prophet himself? This weekend
session will consider these four songs, and the identity and role of
the unnamed Servant. By way of conclusion, we will consider the
ways in which the New Testament authors used these songs to
clarify the identity of Jesus and his mission.

Finally! Your children are adults – you thought you were finished
with the parenting thing?
Not so fast mom and dad…..stay tuned….life happens….
Our children are all grown up and suddenly their lives become
much more complicated. They encounter the stress of relationships, employment, financial security and health issues. Some of
our adult children may struggle with their faith and Church connections. Others may be in danger when dealing with alcohol/drug
addiction, or marital problems. In some cases maybe our adult children are just not living up to our expectations or our vision of what
they should or could become. These are just a few of the real life
situations that can and do happen in the real world.
All parents/grandparents of adult children are invited to explore
John and Therese Boucher’s eye opening book, Praying for Our
Adult Sons and Daughters. We cannot change our grown children
nor can we ‘fix’ or take away any of the life challenges they encounter. What we can do is learn how to place our grown children “in
the Heart of God” and in turn help ourselves deal with our own
feelings of distress, helplessness, and frustration. This book will
enlighten us with its emphasis on love, wisdom, hopeful acceptance, and forgiveness. (Continued on next page.)

The Clare Gallery is please to present Intimations, an exhibition by
artist and writer Nan Runde.
This exhibition is free and open to the public and extends from
March 26 – May 17, 2015. Nan Runde’s work is both abstract and
atmospheric. This exhibition presents work from two series, Litho
Crayon Series and Egg Tempera Series. Her litho crayon drawings
emerge from the paper from thousands of marks. Similarly the egg
tempera paintings require patience to master the process.
Runde’s images are large, layered and rich in density of greys and
color. Her images require an immense amount of time and fortitude. The two series are similar by their abstract nature, their ability to emerge from the surface, and the use of natural forms. But,
they are different in the way Runde plays with text and symbols
creating a unique form of writing for her paintings. At the reception, Nan Runde will discuss her two processes—lithographic crayon and egg tempera painting—along with her connection to nature,
dreams, and imagination.

lead a morning tour of the upcoming Civil War exhibit at the
Knights of Columbus Museum in New Haven, CT, followed by afternoon tours of select exhibitions at the MET (www.metmuseum.org)
Cost is $55 per person which includes transportation via airconditioned bus, admission fees, the guided tours, and gratuity.

Among the four evangelists, Luke alone has written a sequel to his
story of Jesus in which he traces the spread of the message about
Jesus from Jerusalem to Rome. The story in Acts is a lively and inspiring account of the church’s early mission and its chief personalities. These six sessions will introduce the main episodes and
themes of the book.
The first session will be an introduction to the Acts of the Apostles,
followed by five sessions devoted to the following passages of
Acts: the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-47); the Conversion of Paul (Acts
9:1-19;22:6-16; and 26:12-18); the Beginning of the Gentile Mission (Acts
10:1-11:18and 15:1-35); Paul in Corinth (Acts 18:1-19:10); and Paul in Rome
(Acts 28:1-31). Supplementary readings will be assigned from: Luke
Timothy Johnson, The Acts of the Apostles (Sacra Pagina 5; Collegeville: The Liturgical Press, 1992) ISBN 978-0-8146-5807-9

THE GIFT OF UNDERSTANDING:
Navigating Conversations About End of Life Care

Having conversations with our loved ones about critical treatment
decisions can be difficult. However, these conversations can help
give the “gift of understanding” to those who may be faced with
making decisions for us if we are unable to speak for ourselves.
This presentation focuses on the clinical, ethical and spiritual dimensions of end-of-life care. Emphasis will be placed on tools for
health care providers, patients and family members to discuss values, beliefs and wishes that can help guide treatment decisions.
Participants will examine different types of Advance Directives
and their use in the clinical setting, as well as best practices and
current trends in discussing end-of-life care.

CANCER AS A SPIRITUAL TEACHER

Cancer is a very challenging diagnosis and the experience of being
ill with cancer impacts people in a variety of ways. In this program, which will be a “mini-retreat” format, there will be input
and an opportunity to explore one’s experience of cancer especially
as it relates to one’s spirituality.
Presenter: Suzanne Nolan has been a chaplain for almost 25 years.
Currently, she is the Director of Pastoral Care at St. Francis Hospital.
She is a spiritual director and has been a retreat leader. Suzanne has had
cancer.

We celebrate the indwelling of the very Spirit of God within us. Using some of the same rituals found in the Easter Vigil we will celebrate what God has accomplished within us beginning with Ash
Wednesday and coming to fullness in the lived reality of the gift of
God's Spirit.

to find happiness outside ourselves, the true source of joy lies much closer than we might
think. This renewing weekend explores how we can discover deep and enduring joy in God’s
presence no matter the situation. We’ll explore ways to cultivate resilience amid life’s inevitable challenges and examine the central spiritual insights necessary to experiencing lasting
joy.”
Every year men representing St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church gather to attend this retreat.
The men may invite their sons, nephews and friends, who may be from other parishes, to
join them. All are truly welcome. The retreat theme is “Know Greater Joy”. Information

Ms. Melanie Beaule has been a parishioner of St. Patrick-St. Anthony since 2000. During this time she has
served as a Religious Education instructor, member and past president of the Ladies Guild, and a Coordinator for the MOMS program. Melanie and her husband Rick have been married for 33 years and have 3
adult children, 2 sons and 1 daughter.
Fr. David Cinquegrani, C.P. is the Retreat Director at Holy Family Retreat Center in West Hartford, CT.
He holds both Master of Divinity and Master of Liturgical Theology degrees from Catholic Theological
Union in Chicago as well as a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Music from Marywood University in
Scranton, PA. Fr. David entered the Passionist Community in 1989 and has been a chaplain and music
educator on the college level for 30 years. Originally from Scranton, PA, Fr. David's family now lives in
Memphis, TN.
Ms. Patricia Curtis joined the Pastoral Staff in December, 2001. Pat’s responsibilities include collaborating
with the Women of Hope Ministry, Baptism Preparation Team, Clare Gallery Ministry, Adult Faith Formation Committee, RCIA process, Prayer Shawl Ministry, Welcoming and Hospitality Ministries. Prior to
relocating back to Connecticut, Pat lived and worked in Rochester, NY as a Pastoral Associate for 12 years
in the Diocese of Rochester. Pat has a Master’s degree in Pastoral Ministry from Boston College.
Ms. Frances D'Amico is a long-time parishioner of St. Patrick - St. Anthony and is an active member of the
Committee for Social Justice, Sister Parish Committee, and Catherine's Place ministry. One of her passions
is protecting the earth's environment for today and for generations to come.
Ms. Patricia Dressler is a Hartford native and a graduate of St. Augustine School and South Catholic
High School. Pat has been a member of St. Patrick - St. Anthony since 1995 and is mother to one adult son
and two adult step-daughters. She is enjoying her retirement from the Travelers Insurance Co. and currently lives in Windsor with her husband Mark. Between them, they are the proud grandparents of 4
boys and 2 girls.
Fr. Thomas Gallagher, ofm joined the St. Patrick-St. Anthony community in August 2008 as pastor. Previously, he served as Novice Master/Director for 9 years for the Holy Name Province. He has also served
for 14 years in parish ministry in Little Falls, NJ and 4 years at St. Francis Retreat Center in Rye Beach,
NH. Fr. Tom has a B.A. in Speech Therapy from Montclair State College and a M.A. in Theology from
Washington Theological Union.
Professor Dorothy Keller is Chairperson of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at the University
of Saint Joseph. It is impossible for anyone to have a conversation with Professor Dorothy and not be inspired and invigorated by the world of Art. Her consciousness is awash not only with a keen appreciation
for the visceral beauty of Art, but also for its ability to tie together the seemingly disparate worlds of philosophy, science, religion, technology and politics. Professor Dorothy has traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East, and has taken part in many archeological digs. She is an active Secular
Franciscan who loves to share her passion for the lives of Saints Francis and Clare. Professor Dorothy
brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her courses and programs.
Dr. Matthew Kenney holds a Ph.D. in theology with a certification in Bioethics from the Center for Health
Care Ethics at Duquesne University. He is the Vice President for Mission and Ethics at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, CT. He teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in bioethics at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT as well as Advance Practice Nursing Ethics and Theology
courses at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, CT. He also serves as a consultant at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT and St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, CT. He has presented ethics grand rounds and workshops on a wide range of bioethical issues ranging from ethical considerations
at the origin of life to withholding and withdrawing medical treatment, and has provided expert testimony to various state legislatures on a range of ethical issues. Prior to joining the St. Francis family he
served as Executive Assistant to the President and Assistant Vice President for Mission and Catholic Identity at Sacred Heart University.

Ms. Marion Kingsbury is a long-time parishioner of St. Patrick-St. Anthony and a member of the Adult
Faith Formation Ministry, Committee for Social Justice and is active in the sandwich ministry. She has a
Bachelor’s degree from St. Louis University and a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Social Science from
San Francisco State University. She recently graduated from the Catholic Biblical School of the Archdiocese of Hartford.
Mr. John Lemega has participated in Lectio Divina as a participant and facilitator for the past 8 years.
John is a former steward of the Servant Leadership School and is a practicing spiritual director, having
completed the internship program at the Spiritual Life Center. He and his wife, Joyce, have been parishioners for 20 years and he presently serves on the Finance Committee and in the Spiritual Direction Ministry.
Ms. Suzanne Nolan is the Director of the Pastoral Care Department at St. Francis Hospital and Medical
Center. She is also a spiritual director at the Spiritual Life Center in West Hartford. Her degree in Psychology from Brown University and her M.A. degree in Counseling from the University of St. Joseph
have prepared her well for her varied ministerial professions.
Ms. June Porter grew up in Lawrence, MA, and joined SP-SA community in the fall of 2009, where she
serves as a Minister of the Eucharist. She was a legal secretary for 25 years before switching careers. For
the past 19 years, June has worked as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant in school systems in the
“quiet corner” of Connecticut. She lives in Storrs and has three grown children (and two “grand dogs”).
Fr. John Powers, C.P. was ordained in 1977 and is the author of six books in adult spirituality and two
books for children. He has served as a Travelling Preacher, Director, Producer, and Host of the Passionist
Radio and Television Ministry in Springfield, MA, Director of Calvary Retreat Center, and Rector of Passionist Communities in Shrewsbury, MA, and Riverdale, NY. Fr. John C.P. now serves as a Preacher of
Weekend Retreats, Five day Parish Missions, Day, Evening, and overnight programs. He is presently
writing a new book, tentatively titled, “A Witness to Hope; A Priest’s Story.”
Mr. Paul D. Sansone studied Scripture at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and has
been active in adult education and formation for many years.
Sr. Virginia Sheehan, SND has been a member of the Adult Faith Formation Program here at St. Patrick‐
St. Anthony Church for many years. Presently Sr. Ginny conducts retreats at various centers and serves
as a spiritual director for individuals in their journey of faith.
Mr. Steve Starski is from the New York Metro area and has been attending St. Patrick-St. Anthony
Church since the Friars arrived in 1990. Steve has served on the Adult Faith Formation Committee for
several years. He is retired from Southern New England Telephone Company after 37 years in the corporate environment. Steve lives in Manchester with his wife and they have three grown daughters and two
grandchildren.
Mr. Jack Wentland started active work for justice and peace in 1969 by supporting Cesar Chavez’s United
Farm Workers. He joined a local group in his hometown of Rockford, Illinois, carrying a placard reading
“Don’t Buy Grapes” in front of a busy supermarket. With degrees in Latin American Studies and Business
and Management, he has served as co-Director of Service, Justice and Peace at Holy Family Church, Inverness, IL and has continued as an active member of community peace and justice groups for over 20
years. He serves on our parish Committee for Social Justice.
Ms. Trudi White, CVA is a graduate of University of the South Education for Ministry program and a
Spiritual Director. Trudi has worked extensively in spiritual group facilitation (including Spiritual Reflection) since 1995. Trudi continues to use reflection tools in her work with other Spiritual Directors, people
on the margins and individuals on an ongoing basis. Trudi's work, as the Director of Volunteer Ministry
at St. Patrick – St. Anthony Church and The Franciscan Center for Urban Ministry, continues to challenge
her in the areas of community building and empowerment of all the baptized.

A devotional concert of the beloved Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolisi featuring the
St. Patrick-St. Anthony Treble Clef Choir. This work is based on the Medieval Latin Stabat
Mater, a poem describing the profound sorrow the Virgin Mary experienced witnessing the
death of her son, Jesus.

THE EASTER VIGIL
We gather around sacred flames to remember our origins, to tell our story, to form Church. The
ancient symbol of the Easter candle is plunged into the waters of our font. Tonight, the Church
gives birth. As it labors in love, Mother Church sings its pangs of joy as catechumens are born
and our hearts are reborn. The Easter Vigil sets out for the church in sign, symbol, word and
gesture, the heart of our Catholic Christian faith and identity. Our Vigil accentuates the
symbols that illuminate our existence. We are people of the cross. We enter the waters and
become members of the faith community. Thus we become people of the light, gathered to
celebrate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ around the Eucharistic table.
