EDITOR’S NOTE: This series celebrating our heritage during the 150th
anniversary of the Civil War draws primarily from wartime dispatches credited to The Associated Press or other
accounts distributed through the AP
and other historical sources.
The associated Press reported in a
dispatch Jan. 16, 1865, that conditions
appeared to be deteriorating for Robert
E. Lee’s Confederate forces in Virginia.
The dispatch said heavy winter rains
and flooding had destroyed “every culvert
and bridge” along the danville railroad
that was a key supply route for Lee’s army
in Virginia.
“Lee’s army is likely to be out of rations
altogether very soon,” The aP dispatch
said, adding that reports foodstuffs were
running so low that many Confederates
were though to “suffer almost starvation.”
It said the wipeout of the key rail
supply line to Richmond marked a big
blow for the Confederate capital.
“as this is their main road by which
they get their supplies to Richmond, it
would not be strange if the state of affairs
in this neighborhood should undergo an
important change within a few days.”
The aP report did not elaborate further on the possible impact.
Meanwhile, reports were just reaching
Northern newspapers of the Union’s successful on Fort Fisher in North Carolina.
One account cited a report from the U.s.
Flagship Malvern as saying big eleveninch guns were used to bombard the fort
hours.
The dispatch added that “the fort was
reduced to a pulp — every (Confederate) gun was silenced by being injured or
covered up with earth, so that they would
not work.”

My neighbors are gone,
They’ve both passed on.
What wonderful people to know.
How sad it makes me
To look out and see
That neither are there anymore.
at “end of life” times
There’s no reason or rhymes
To temper the sadness we feel.
But, we mustn’t lose sight
as they step toward the light
Reunited as heaven’s bells peal.
yes, I am sad, yet still somehow glad
That together again they reside.
Now their home is above,
and they look down with love.
Their legacy remembered with pride.
They gave all they could
and lived how they should
They struggled, yet prospered as well.
They made family and friends,
Memories of no ends;
Many stories to pass on and tell.
yes, I’ll miss them both now
and my head I will bow.
and thank Jesus he put us all here...
and I won’t look across, without feeling
the loss
I’ll look up, and know they are near.
Sharon Coup Elliott,
Findlay
Listen
Listen closely to what you hear,
as Jesus whispers in your ear.
Can you help a neighbor, on your block,
Rescue someone from the dark?
Or just pat someone on the back,
Come on, you know you have the knack.
Jesus gave you all you need,
Come on now and take His lead.
On this earth you won’t be great,
But in Jesus’ book, you’ll be a saint.

Ceded Indian reservation
overlaid part of Hancock Co.
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is from
a series written from 1959 to 1974
by the late R.L. Heminger, publisher
and editor of The Courier.
By R.L. HEMINGER
In an eastern area of Hancock
County once was located a portion
of an official Indian reservation set
apart by the United states government in conformity with a treaty
with the Wyandot Indians early in
the 19th century.
The reservation also included a
portion of western seneca County.
In fact, the larger part of the reservation was in seneca County. But it
extended about two miles into Hancock County and included areas of
Biglick and delaware townships.
Early maps in the office of the
Hancock County engineer, Norris E.
stultz, show the extent of the Indian
reservation, and some maps which
have been published in more recent
years after the reservation had been
abandoned by the Indians still show
reservation boundaries, as a matter
of interest.
after the war of 1812, a movement began to extinguish all the
Indian titles in Ohio. Lewis Cass
and duncan Mcarthur, who had
been regimental commanders with
Gen. Hull’s army when Fort Findlay
was built in 1812, met with a large
delegation of Indian chiefs and warriors, at the foot of rapids of the
Maumee on sept. 29, 1817.
Cass and Mcarthur, who were
colonels when the Hull army went
through here, were brigadier generals by that time and were the official
representatives of the federal government in dealing with the Indians.
Wyandots, delawares, senecas,
Potawatomies, Ottawas and Chippewas were in attendance on behalf
of all northwestern Ohio Indian
tribes. a treaty was concluded by
which all the lands of the Indians
within the state of Ohio were ceded
to the United states forever, with
the exception of reservation land
granted.
The treaty granted to the seneca
Indians a tract of land containing
30,000 acres, east of the sandusky
River in seneca County. among the
Indians who participated were Coffeehouse, Running about and Wipingstick.
another treaty was made about
a year later in which 10,000 more
acres were added to the seneca reservation, adjoining the other reservation on the south, making the
whole reserve 40,000. all of this was
within seneca County.
This same treaty gave to the
Wyandots a tract 24 miles square
in southwestern seneca County and
eastern Hancock County, containing
16,000 acres of land.
The exact language of the treaty
in this connection follows:
“That there shall be reserved
for the use of Wyandots residing at
solomon-town and on Blanchard’s
Fork, 16,000 acres of land to be laid
off in a square from the head of the
Blanchard’s fork, the center of which
shall be at the Big spring, on the
trace leading from Upper sandusky
to Fort Findlay.”
The reservation was known as
the Big spring Indian reservation.
Two thirds of the reservation was in
seneca County and the remainder in
Hancock County for the most part.
The reference to “Blanchard’s
Fork” means the Blanchard River.
In olden times, the waterway was
known as a fork of the auglaize
River, into which it flows in western
Putnam County.
“solomon-town” was an Indian
village named for an Indian chief by
the name of solomon.
Whether the term “Big spring”
refers to the well-known springs and
cave on Limestone Ridge nine miles
east of Findlay is not known.
The southwestern township in
seneca County opposite Hancock
County has the name “Big spring.”
The road going past the springs and
cave in the Upper sandusky-Findlay
road is referred to as a “trace” in
the treaty.
On Jan. 17, 1832, a new treaty
was made between Uncle sam
and the Indians at McCutcheonville, whereby the Indians ceded
their reservation land to the U.s.
government. It was early in the
1840s, however, before they all left.
McCutcheonville is a small town
on the seneca-Wyandot county line
north of Carey.
The records say that all the Indians got drunk after the McCutcheonville treaty signing and the white
men departed quickly, figuring probably that the Indians might change
their minds and become troublesome.

Lost ring saved by
treasure hunter
saN FRaNCIsCO (aP) — a san
Francisco Bay area man who lost a
ring while surfing in the ocean 35
years ago had it returned to him by
a treasure hunter.
Robert Fowler was 17 when he
was surfing off a Marin County
beach and his gold high school class
ring slipped off his finger.
He didn’t think he’d see the ring
again.
Larry Feurzeig finds a few hundred dollars in coins each year, along
with plenty of beer cans.
Two weeks ago, he found the ring,
which bore the initials of Fowler
and a Marin County high school,
engraved inside.
Through alumni records,
Feurzeig found Fowler and emailed
him to meet in front of a san Francisco grocery store. Fowler got his
ring back. Feurzeig got a bottle of
champagne.
Chicago strip club receives
Block Star Business award
CHICaGO (aP) — a Chicago
strip club has received an award
for its efforts at dressing up the
neighborhood.
The admiral Theatre on Chicago’s northwest side received one of
albany Park Neighbors’ six “Block
star Business” awards this week.
The group’s website says the honor
is meant to spotlight businesses
that work to keep the neighborhood clean and presentable.
“It’s difficult to dispute the
ad m i r a l do e s n’t de s e r ve t he
award,” group member shylo Bisnett said. “They recently upgraded
their façade and, even during construction, it was still tidy, it was
still passable.”
Nick Cecola, the admiral’s creative director, said he thought it
was a scam when he received an
email informing him about the
award.
The club plans to showcase the
certificate in the main lobby.
“ We ’re ac t u a l ly get t i n g it
framed,” he said, adding that the
club has someone “always keeping
everything clean, walking up and
down the sidewalk, making sure
they sweep, keeping the whole
block basically immaculate.”
C om munit y members nom inate businesses and winners are
selected via Facebook votes, Bisnett said.
alderman Rey Colon approves.
“The admiral Theatre stands
out on Lawrence avenue as one
of the most attractive and wellmaintained buildings in albany
Park,” Colon told The Chicago
sun-Times.

Mariah Carey
to open series of
shows in Las Vegas
By MESFIN FEKADU
AP MusiC WriTer
NEW yORK (aP) — Mariah
Carey is heading to sin City.
Caesars Palace has announced
that the 44-year-old pop icon would
open a series of shows May 16 at The
Colosseum in Las Vegas. Carey has
announced 18 performances, so far.
The show, dubbed “MaRIaH
CaREy #1s,” will feature the singer
performing her 18 No. 1 singles,
which include “We Belong Together,”
‘’Hero” and “Vision of Love.” she is
one of the all-time best-selling acts
in music.
Carey’s announcement came
after a so-so year for the multiplatinum, Grammy-winning star. Her
latest album, “Me. I am Mariah...
The Elusive Chanteuse,” was a commercial flop and she was criticized
for her vocal performance during her
recent tour.
Carey, a judge on “american
Idol” for one season and the mother
of 3-year-old twins, is following in
the steps of Britney spears, Celine
dion and shania Twain, who have
performed their worldwide hits at
Vegas residences.
The Caesars subsidiary that
owns and manages most of its
casino-hotels, including Caesars
Palace where Carey will be performing, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
recently. The company’s CEO said in
a statement that its lineup of entertainers would continue to perform
as scheduled and customers should
expect no interruption.
Tickets for Carey’s show, on sale
now, range from $55 to $250. she
will perform nine shows in May and
nine shows in June.
Carey will also release a new edition of “#1’s,” her 1998 compilation
album, this year. It will include some
new music.
