Minneapolis Ranked Nation’s Best
Park System
The Park Board was created by the Minnesota
legislature and ratified by Minneapolis voters in
April 1883. The Minneapolis Park System is rated
#1 in America by The Trust for Public Land’s
ParkScore® index, finishing first among the 50
largest U.S. cities. Minneapolis parks scored well on all rating
factors, with especially high marks for park system investment and
park accessibility – with 94 percent of residents living within ½-mile
from a park or trail.
ParkScore ratings are based equally on three factors: park access
(percent of residents within one-half mile of a park); park size (city
size and percent of city area dedicated to parks); and services and
investment (number of playgrounds and per capita park spending).

The nine-member Board of Commissioners is an independently
elected, semi-autonomous body responsible for maintaining and
developing the Minneapolis Park system to meet the needs of
citizens of Minneapolis. This unique structure allows independent
decision-making so the MPRB can efficiently manage the park
system and serve the diverse park and recreation needs of the city.
Mission The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board shall
permanently preserve, protect, maintain, improve, and enhance its
natural resources, parkland, and recreational opportunities for
current and future generations.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board exists to provide places
and recreation opportunities for all people to gather, celebrate,
contemplate, and engage in activities that promote health,
well-being, community, and the environment.

the entire park system for all your meeting needs. Groups
may be public and/or private agencies, organizations,
businesses, or more informal. There are different permit

are committed to making your child’s birthday a fun and
memorable event in the parks.

Phenology in Our Parks
Become a detective! In this class based on the book “In the
Snow: Who’s Been Here?” we will search for clues, play
games and create art to discover what animals have been in
our parks. Each week we will learn about a new Minnesota
animal that stays here in the winter. Put on your detective
hats and bring your magnify glass as we discover “Who’s
Been Here?” in our parks!
When do flowers and trees start to bloom? What are the first
animals and insects we see? Phenology is the study of
changes in plants and animals and often answers these
questions. Become a scientist as we study phenology in our
parks! Create your own science journal, sharpen your
observation skills and collect data. At the end of the series we
will submit our findings to the USA National Phenology
Network and share our data with other scientists like you.
Play games, explore the arts, take hikes and much more in
this spring discovery class!

gardens really grow in our parks? We will learn about the
plants that grow in Minnesota, how to care for our garden,
and make some tasty recipes! Think outside the box as we
learn about creative garden spaces and construct some of our
own. We will work together to create a final project and
make our parks more beautiful to visit!

Revolutionary Sports
RevSports instructional classes maximize the time that a
player spends developing individual skills. Each day will
focus on a topic that builds on the previous topic. Class
starts with an active, skill-based warm-up; transitions into
a fun, more challenging game; and ends with an
age-appropriate small-sided game. All ability levels are
welcome. Focus is on individual player development and
helping each player at their own ability level become more
confident with the necessary skills of the game.
TotStars, PreStars & KinderStars: are entry-level parent
child programs designed for ages 2-3, 3-5 and 4-6 year
olds. Classes are non-competitive, sport instruction is a
