CALIFORNIA REVELS PRESENTS THE 30TH ANNUAL A Venetian Masque Celebrating the Winter Solstice in Renaissance Italy December 11 – 13 and 18 – 20, 2015 David Parr, Artistic Director OR ORDER FROM OUR WEBSITE celticjewelers.com VISIT OUR STORE TUES. – SAT. 11 AM – 7 PM SUN. 12 PM - 5 PM T Director’s Note he allure of Venice is hard to describe. The commonly known facts make it unusual, of course. A city built on more than one hundred small islands, packed with innumerable narrow, mazelike alleys and small squares, it looks across a lagoon to the Adriatic Sea. Its palazzi and piazzi seem to float on and sometimes under, the water. There are no cars, no highways, just canals and the legendary gondole. Based on quaint and quirky qualities alone, Venice would stand out among urban habitats. But the true magic of Venice comes from a far deeper place. The Most Serene Republic of CELTIC INHERITANCE H andmade Celtic Jewellery Venice spans a long stretch of history from pre-Roman times to the present day. It was, for centuries, the dominant trading power in the Mediterranean. One of its most famous inhabitants, Marco Polo, helped establish it as a western terminus of the Silk Road, the trade route to the Orient. Its architecture reflects a merging of Byzantine and Moorish influences along with a healthy dose of Gothic and Renaissance finery. The name of Venice is also associated with the most refined of high art. The city lent its name to the Venetian school of painting and masters such as Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese all painted here. The writings of Casanova would set Venice as the favored locale for many subsequent literary efforts while composers, such as Willaert, and Gabrieli — both represented in this year’s Revels — a nd later, Vivaldi added to the cultural heritage of the city. There were playwrights, too. The comedic writer Ruzante, known for somewhat crude rustic humor hailed from Venice, as did the two Carlos, Gozzi and Goldoni, who based their work on the scenarii and stock characters of the earthy Commedia dell’Arte tradition. Venice was indeed a meeting place of high and low art. And that is where the rich history of Venice intersects with our Christmas Revels. We’ve Mac Manus &S ons Platinum, 18Kt. & 14Kt. While Spain was perceived as a threat and a rival, no military peril ever materialized. And although no evidence suggests that he ever indulged in the activities we suggest, the Doge in that era was Antonio Priuli. That much is true. A troupe of Commedians, and a band of dancers — emigrants of yore foreshadowing emigrants of today — arrive in the Piazza San Marco. That much is plausible. Then they all meet on the Solstice, and the fun begins. That much . . . is Revels. O che di bon echo By Orlando di Lasso ( c. 1532 – 1594) , a Franco-Flemish composer of the late Renaissance, at home in many different compositional styles. He is today considered to be one of the most famous and influential musicians in Europe at the end of the 16th century. He wrote over 2000 compositions in several languages, many in Italian. The echo song is a witty use of double choir, with one choir imitating the first. The English words here are fashioned by Fred Goff. He was one of the developers of a form called madrigal comedy — unstaged but dramatic collections of madrigals which, when sung consecutively, told a story.
