Introduction A good and reliable signage system should be developed with accessibility in mind to help guide pedestrians to navigate easily in buildings and public areas. This is of importance in view of the changing demographic of Singapore, which sees an increasing elderly population, who will require additional aids to assist them in navigating through spaces. Hence, wayfinding system should be considered holistically as part of the building and facility planning process to guide pedestrians. Programme 1.30pm Registration 2.00pm Welcome Address and Overview of National Standardisation Programme Mr Robert Chew Chairman, Silver Industry Standards Committee The new SS 599 aims at improving wayfinding experiences of public space users and focusses on generic wayfinding guidelines for common public environments, encompassing general considerations on the needs of the elderly. Recognising that each site/facility has its own unique needs, the SS 599 can be used as a basis for users to expand into a specific set of signage guidelines that meet the needs of their contexts. The recognisable pictograms/symbols in SS 599 will provide a general consistent design for users. The standard was developed using universal design principles as a basis, with specific considerations for the elderly. 2.10pm Overview of SS 599 : 2014 - Guide for Wayfinding Signage in Public Areas Mr Ken Chong Convenor, Working Group on Public Signage 2.40pm Ageing and Wayfinding Mr Eric Koh Member, Working Group on Public Signage Joint-Director, Temasek Polytechnic, Centre for Ageing Studies The standard is applicable to signage consultants, designers, and also stakeholders involved in the planning and evaluation of signage implementation.
