Negev Galilee - Israel's Region of Possibilities
Welcome to the Arava, a primeval region abundant in scenery stretching
over 200 square kilometers and home to 7,500 residents inhabiting
various forms of income-sharing communities.
The main livelihood here is agriculture; we raise hothouse bell peppers,
dates, melons, tomatoes, tropical fish, algae, and cows and goats’ milk, to
name just a few of our products - which is why we’re on the cutting edge
of advanced agriculture in arid conditions.
In addition, we lie the furthest from Israel’s center of any region. This distance
results in - or perhaps attracts - creativity and ingenuity, and an unconventional
mindset. Here you’ll meet artists and crafters, owners of unique businesses,
practitioners of a myriad of therapies, facilitators of workshops for every
age group and interest, a cultural landscape that combines professional with
“home-grown”, and quality education and community.
The innovation inspired by Arava life has also led to establishing unique
tourist attractions based on our treasured natural landscape that enables
a sense of unfettered freedom.
Herein you’ll find a complete guide to our accommodations, visitor sites,
activities, dining, treatments, workshops, and tours.
We hereby wish you the vacation of your dreams… and more!

At Hatzeva lies the Biblical settlement of Tamar and the Byzantine Tamra. Remains of the square fortress town from the
earliest Biblical settlement (in King Solomon’s time) have been found in the area, as well as an Edomite temple and the
remains of a Roman bathhouse. Tamar was built at the intersection of the roads leading to the Red Sea and to Ma'ale aqrabbim
(Scorpion Ascent). Ceremonial vessels, clay pots, coins, and the remains of a Nabatean inn that was situated on the road from
Petra to Mamshit have been found. The remnants of the fortresses have been reconstructed, as has a four-room house - a
house typical of the First Temple period, serving as testimony to the presence of early Jewish communities in the Arava.
The fortress used the water from the nearby Husub (Hatzeva) Spring, alongside which grows a thousand-year-old Jerusalem
thorn tree (Parkinsonia aculeata L.), the oldest tree in Israel. While botanists refer to it by its scientific name: Zizphus spinachristi (Christ’s Thorn Jujube), locals referred to it simply as “the tree”, as there were no other trees in the area. Two American
colleges (Rochester College in Rochester, Minnesota, USA; and Grace Bible College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA) have
taken up the project of researching the site and of reconstructing a house similar to the four-room house already marked on
the site. The JNF donated many trees that have been planted on the site.
Blossoming Rose, a non-profit society promoting a blossoming and flourishing Israel, maintains the site on an ongoing basis
with the help of GBC and RC students.

>> Sheizaf Reserve
This beautiful nature reserve features sandy stretches typical to the region, as well as the Hatzeva water
tower atop a hill overlooking the reserve, an excellent lookout point. There is a variety of flora and fauna
in the reserve, some of which are quite rare, as well as a large population of Arabian babblers, which can be
viewed from close up, as they’ve become accustomed to visitors. The babblers are the only birds in Israel whose
society is group-based: The members of each group stand watch for each other, and they raise their hatchlings
together. All chicks are born in a communal nest, where the females lay their eggs, and the male's court and
usually breed with all of the females that have joined the group in order to breed. Seeing the babblers close up
is an unforgettable experience: They pounce on breadcrumbs that visitors offer, or even stand on the palm of
your hand and fix you with their beady gaze!

Tene Organic
This 24 kilometer-long internal access road connects Idan, Hatzeva and Ein Yahav. The road, which was paved
by the JNF, runs along the Israel-Jordan border as defined in 1922 during the British Mandate, and was also
noted in the signing of the 1994 peace treaty with Jordan. The road passes through some of the most amazing
Arava scenery, including the Arava cliffs, greenhouses, date plantations, and the stretches of sand at the foot
of the Edom Mountains, which change color with the position of the sun. There are several parking areas
along the way, such as the Peace Observation Point, with its views of Hatzeva, Jordan, and the towering
Edom Mountains. Make sure not to miss the Badlands Route, whose ancient marl ravinis twist into magical
formations, leading to the Hatzeva and Idan reservoirs.

>> Roman and Mandatory Ma'ale Aqrabbim (Scorpions Ascent)
This impressive Roman-era route connected the Arava to the top of the Chatzera mountain range, and passed
from there to Mamshit and then to Jerusalem. The road rises 350 meters in altitude over a stretch of two
kilometers. To accommodate the sharp incline, the road builders quarried an impressive series of levels in the
natural rock, reaching the top of the mountain by means of 35 sharp, winding curves. The road in the other
direction, built in 1927 along the route from Mamshit down to the Arava and Eilat is a winding road suitable for
any type of vehicle; however it is advisable to travel it very carefully. Along the roadside several observation
points have been established for viewing the Tzin Valley and the Roman Ma'ale Aqrabbim.
In 1954, a brutal terror attack was made on a bus making its way up the steep route while returning from a
celebration of the 5th anniversary of the liberation of Eilat. 11 passengers were killed by infiltrators that had
arrived after crossing the Jordanian border.

>> Hai-Bar Nature Reserve
Hai-Bar Nature Reserve
>> Arandal Farm
Arandal Amphitheater
Hai-Bar is a unique nature reserve that has set itself the goal of re-populating the desert with those animals that
inhabited the area at the time of the Bible. This task entails tracking down in all corners of the world the various
species that have been wiped out here, transporting them to Israel, breeding them, and reintroducing them to
nature. Hai-Bar is situated between Samar and Yotvata at the salt marshes, and is rich in vegetation despite the arid
climatic conditions. Underground water from the mountainous areas irrigates the flora, so that it grows in profusion.
The Hai-Bar wildlife sanctuary offers visitors guided tours through the open reserve and encounters with the many
animals that live therein, including wild asses, antelopes, oryxes, and the not-at-all-bashful ostriches. Recommended
times to take the tour are in the morning or evening hours in summer, and during winter, any time of day.
Feed the wild animals and predators
Feeding involves a walking trip to the cages of the snakes and the birds of prey, offering a rare opportunity
to observe the feeding of desert predators, including leopards, wolves, foxes, hyenas, and caracals (wildcats).
Another feature to be found at Hai-Bar is a darkroom that simulates nocturnal conditions during the day, thus
enabling visitors to observe the nocturnal animals of the desert, including rodents, bats, and night predators.
The nighttime rest area and campground are available to visitors.
Arandal is located 5 kilometers north of Yahel, established on an isolated hill with a panorama of the Edom
Mountains and the Arava spread out below. Olive groves are cultivated on the farm to provide organic olives
for olive oil, and there are also date groves.
A tour of Arandal brings to light gripping stories dating as far back as 2,000 years. The Nabateans, who were
myrrh and frankincense traders, left their marks on the hill behind them as they crossed the desert while
traveling the spice route. The remains from the periods when the Turks and then the British ruled the area, the
canal, the bunkers, and the barbed wire fences all have their tales to tell.
How to get there: Hai-Bar is on Rte. 90 (the Arava Highway) south of Yotvata Junction, approximately 35 km
north of Eilat | For details, call +972-8-6376018 | Note: An entrance fee is charged
See our various agricultural operations, observe how Dutch cows are raised in the middle of the desert, visit our
date plantations and the world’s southernmost pomelo groves, and learn how water is purified ecologically by
the “green basin” system, and how plants are irrigated thereby.

Sprawling over a 60 sq. km. horseshoe-shaped area, Timna opens to visitors a “geological window” revealing
its riveting rock formations. The hard, dark granite contrasts with the white and red crumbling sandstone.
Scenes of Genesis greet the visitors near fascinating archeological sites. Our tour offers an audio-visual display,
“Mines Over the Passage of Time”, demonstrating the life lived by the copper miners, and paving the way for
the tour of the park, which takes you to geological and archeological formations such as the Mushroom, the
Arches, King Solomon’s Pillars, the temple to the Egyptian Goddess Hathor, the Valley of Rock Engravings, and
the world’s oldest copper mines.
Alongside our lake, you’ll find an exact replica of the Tent of the Congregation, the Tabernacle that, according to the
Bible, accompanied and instructed the Children of Israel during their wanderings in the desert.
Visits to the Tent of the Congregation must be reserved and arranged in advance.
Timna at Night
During the summer months, when the park is illuminated by splendid pyrotechnical lighting, we offer guided
moonlight tours of the Copper and Light Path, including a visit to the Mushroom, Solomon’s Pillars, and the
lake, where you’ll meet “King Solomon”, who tells stories and fables of times gone by.
During daylight hours, you’ll find tracks for off-road cycling and a bike rental station, workshops on colored
sand-bottle making, peddle boats on the lake, night lodging, and a restaurant.
How to get there: Timna is situated on the Arava Road at Elifaz, 25 km north of Eilat.

Where Aquaculture and Spices Meet
At the point where sea meets land, in the area through which the Biblical Spice Route passed, we’ve established
a desert farm cultivating spices, medicinal herbs, and mariculture. Experience rare encounters with hues and
fragrances from the ancient Via Maris, and witness the merging of the technological knowledge of the Fridman
family, which has long been involved in mariculture, and the Tzitershfiler family, whose roots lay deep where
spices and medicinal herbs grow.
Bird-Watching Park
Israel constitutes a terrestrial bridge between Europe and Africa, and accordingly serves as an axis of migration
for millions of birds.
In an area that was once a salty marshland and served in the past as the Eilat town dump, a miracle has taken
place for the benefit of migratory birds as well as the local avian “homies”. The International Bird-Watching
Centre at Eilat rehabilitated the dump and embarked on an enterprise of preservation and rehabilitation of the
environment, transforming it into a park for waterfowl and songbirds. In addition, Israel’s largest bird-ringing
station operates here.
Many varieties of migrating birds, en route from Israel on their long journey to their nesting grounds abroad,
make use of Eilat’s salty marshland as a fueling station in order to survive the long trip and arrive safely.
We welcome visitors with several footpaths and roads leading to hidden corners perfect for bird-watching. We
also maintain an infirmary, where injured birds are treated with devotion.
The most suitable time to visit is during the spring migration, from February until the end of May; and in autumn
from October until December.
How to get there: The Bird-Watching Park is next to the Rabin Border Crossing.
