OSCEs: Top Ten Troubleshooting Tips
Jane Davidson, The College of Animal Welfare
The OSCEs are the last hurdle before your students qualify as Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs). As clinical coaches, it’s your job to help them master the practical skills needed to successfully pass this test. This lecture will provide technical tips and strategies to give your students the skills and confidence to succeed!
“My Kingdom for a Horse!”: Your Student and the Equine NPL
Stacie Carey, Quality Assurance Supervisor, The College of Animal Welfare
The equine tasks in the Nursing Progress Log (NPL) are often a challenge for purely small-animal practices to complete. How good do you need to be? What kind of timescale do you need to ‘sign off’ a student as capable? Stacie Carey will give you an update on what your student has to complete to be competent.

You Be the DC: Discussing (Hypothetical) Disciplinary Cases with Gordon Hockey
12.10-12.30
Gordon Hockey, Registrar, Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS)
Have you ever discussed the outcome of a disciplinary committee with colleagues? This is your chance to take part – Gordon Hockey, RCVS Registrar, will be presenting a fictional disciplinary case to delegates, with individual teams serving as mock-DCs. Whether you throw the book, or temper the iron of justice with mercy, it’s up to you to hear the evidence, decide the case, and pronounce judgement. You be the DC!
Q&A Panel
This is a brief Q&A session, allowing delegates to present questions (anonymously if desired) to the morning’s speakers for clarification or discussion.

The Hidden Curriculum - The Unwritten Rules of the Veterinary Profession
15.45-16.30
Liz Mossop, Associate Professor of Veterinary Education, Nottingham Vet School
Veterinary Nursing is ‘not just the NPL’ – in addition to the legal and practical requirements, students have to understand the ‘unwritten rules’ of their profession – not secret handshakes and code words, but the spirit of being in the veterinary profession. Liz Mossop, from Nottingham Vet School, will be here to talk about the ‘hidden curriculum’ of the veterinary profession; just where do you stand and how do you work it out?
PSS Update
Jacqui Molyneaux, Chair, Practice Standards Group, Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS)
The Practice Standards Scheme will be undergoing significant change in 2015 so we’re delighted to have RCVS council member and former President Jacqui Molyneaux presenting an overview on what will be different for practices in the coming years.

Helen Frewin, Chartered Occupational Psychologist /Talent Director, Totem Consulting
Yesterday’s talk on ‘preventing a difficult student’ was all well and good, but what about when you’ve already got a difficult student? How to deal with difficult students is a common request for help from our clinical coaches. What does difficult mean? Are they purposefully being awkward or are they lacking in skills, motivation or understanding? What can we do to tap into the potential of young people joining the practice? In this session we will explore how we can create the right environment for students to do well.
Time Management for Veterinary Nurses
Anne-Marie Aylott, Executive & Business Coach, Purple Cat Coaching
One of the most commonly requested topics in last year’s feedback for TP Congress 2015 was time management! So without further ado; you wanted it, and we delivered! Join us for Anne-Marie Aylott’s tips and advice on how to manage your time and your plans effectively in veterinary practice.
