Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony 2014–15
When: 11 & 12 May 2015
Where: Kalamandir
On the first day of the ceremony,
prizes were distributed to pupils of
Classes 3 to 6. Pupils of Classes 7 to
12 received their prizes on the second
day. Special prizes and the House
Trophy were also awarded on the
second day.
The evening began by observing a
minute’s silence as a mark of respect to
the memory of Mr Jayanta Dasgupta
who had passed away on 28 March
2015. He was not only the Secretary
of Garden High School but also a
founder member and trustee of the
Satikanta Guha Foundation.
The first item of the programme was
Egyptian Saga, a piece of music played
by Mr Anupam Halder (violin and
synthesizer), Mr Gourab Sen (lead
guitar) and guest artistes – Mr Kalyan
Das (bass guitar), Mr Sushroto
Goswami (flute) and Mr Suvam
Ghosh (octopad).
The Founder-Rector, Mr Indranath
Guha, then lit the ceremonial lamp.
This was followed by a Hindustani
classical vocal recital by Srimantee
Mohanta 7B, Suryadipta Bhattacharya
7B, Sreeja Nayek 8D, Soham Mitra 8F
and Sarbajit Dutta 11A, trained and
led by their music teacher Ms Manali
Bose. They sang a khayal in raga
Yaman, set to teen taal, and a thumri in
raga Kafi, set to adhya taal. They were
accompanied by Mr Manoj Pandey on
the tabla and Mr Debasish Adhikari
on the harmonium.
Then came Saraswati Vandana, a dance

choreographed by Ms Meghna Guha
Majumdar and set to a hymn sung by
Ms Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta. The
dancers were: Ahana Majumdar 5B,
Dishari Paul 7E, Pratiti Pradhan 8C,
Srija Gharami 8D, Ipsa Samaddar 9D,
Sampriti Dasgupta 10B and Adrija
Debnath 12B.
As the chairman of the Satikanta
Guha Foundation, Mr I. Guha placed
before the audience a report on the
Foundation’s activities during the year
2014–15.
The Principal, Mrs Bijoylakshmi
Ghoshal, then addressed the audience.
A guest who habitually overstayed her
welcome was the theme of the brief
English comedy, Bobby’s Miracle,
presented by a talented cast comprising
Roshni Singh 10C as Mrs Monica Dasgupta, Aatreyee Mohanta 11B as Bobby,
Shivangi Brahma 12B as Radhar Ma,
Roshni Srimany 11B as Dolly Pishi and
Prapti Dasgupta 11B as Prapti, the
maid. The play was directed by
Ms Kavita Guha with the assistance of
Ms Trina Dasgupta and Ms Ronjini
Bose Correia. Srijita Goswami 11B
was the Production Manager.
Prizes were then given away by the
Founder–Rector, Mr I. Guha. The

At this juncture, Ms Rajashri Biswas,
Headmistress, who was conducting the
proceedings, announced that the
Foundation was instituting, with
immediate effect, a special prize to be
awarded annually: Jayanta Dasgupta
Memorial Prize for outstanding
achievement in any extra-curricular
activity. This prize was being given
this year to Shreya Chakraborty for
Lawn Tennis (see pages 2 & 11).
The House Trophy went to Chinar.
The House Captain and Vice-Captain,
Debleena Ghosh (ISC 2015) and Adrija
Debnath 12B, received the trophy.
The Junior School Choir then sang
Tagore’s Jogot Jure Udar Shure Anando
Gaan Baje. This was followed by A
Whole New World from the movie
Aladdin.
The Senior School Choir sang the
nostalgic song Memory from the
Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Cats.
They concluded with De De Paal Tule
De, a lively folk song.

GHS pupils presented a programme in
the form of a baithaki adda in observance of Rabindra Jayanti. The topic
chosen was Rabindranath O Shiksha.
Through excerpts from Totakahini,
Achalayatan, Chintashil and Shiksha,
Rabindranath’s views on education
were explored. Education is not
simply a tool to secure degrees and
build careers; it should help develop
character, encourage creativity and
foster a sense of morality.

directing the programme.
Netaji’s Birthday
When: 23 January 2015

Participants: Classes 8, 9 and 11
The 118th birth anniversary of one of
the foremost of Indian freedom
fighters, Subhas Chandra Bose, was
observed in the morning. In an
impressive programme, the narrators
emphasized the role that Netaji played
in India’s struggle for freedom and his
bold and striking ideas which set him
apart from other leaders. The crisp,
informative narration was interspersed
with songs inspired by nationalism and
patriotism. Pupils also recited poems
like Bikkhobh by Sukanta Bhattacharya
and Where the Mind is without Fear by
Rabindranath.
The narrators recalled how the
revolutionary Rashbehari Bose, exiled
in Japan, handed over the leadership
of the Azad Hind Fauj to Netaji. The
clarion call of Dilli Chalo still rings in
our ears. Excerpts from Netaji’s
speeches were read – speeches that
emphasized the immense task, beset
with many perils, that lay before the
Fauj.
Though his disappearance remains a
mystery to this day, the programme
highlighted the iconic status Netaji
still enjoys and which continues to
inspire millions of modern Indians.
The programme ended with everyone
rising to sing the National Anthem
proudly.

during which teachers were ‘quizzed’,
and humorous anecdotes were
exchanged. Brief speeches by both
students and teachers were followed by
music and songs.
Then it was time for a sumptuous tea

The teachers of Class 2 held a special assembly to convey their best wishes to the
pupils of Class 2 who would be attending Class 3 in the main building. Songs by
pupils followed brief speeches by both pupils and teachers. The solo
performances of Monoswita Sengupta 2A, Totini Mukherjee 2C and Adrija
Mukherjee 2D deserve special mention.
The assembly ended with a song sung by all the teachers specially for the pupils
of Class 2.
Cook-In
On 13 March, the children of the Primary Section ended their session with a lipsmacking Cook-In, an annual event when all the pupils from Nursery 1 to Class 2
prepare their midday snacks themselves. Nursery 1 made Mast Papri Chat, and
Chatpata Churmur was a rage with Nursery 2. The Preparatory made Baby Burgers
with fillings that they had brought from home. They put the burgers together in
class and made themselves a tasty snack.
The little chefs of Class 1 prepared Aloo Chaat. The children mixed the
ingredients with the help of their teachers.
Class 2 made an innovative dish – Dahi Idli. The children got sliced idlis
generously topped with a spicy curd mixture, tamarind chutney, bhujia and
chopped coriander leaves and onion slices.
Sanjeev Kapoor and Vikas Khanna would have been proud of the culinary skills
the children displayed.

humorous pieces by Kenn Nesbitt
and Gareth Lancaster had the
audience in splits. The entire
programme was ably compered by

Excursion
The children of the Preparatory
Class were taken to Science City for
an excursion on 26 February 2015.
149 children, accompanied by their
respective Class Teachers, went on
the trip. They visited the Evolution
Park, Dynamotion Hall and the
outdoor Science Park.
I N M EMORIAM
A Visit to the Monginis Factory
On 18, 23, 24 and 25 of February 2015, Classes 1 & 2 were taken on a field trip
to the Monginis factory. They were given a guided tour of the place and shown
how cakes and savouries were baked and prepared. Before leaving the factory
each child was treated to a slice of freshly baked chocolate cake and given a
packet full of Monginis goodies.

Educated at St Xavier’s, Hazaribagh,
and St Xavier’s College, Kolkata, he
held responsible posts in various
concerns such as Avery India,
Godrej, and Steelage India.
He was a founding member and
trustee of Satikanta Guha Foundation. He was the Secretary of the
Foundation, which post he
relinquished when the Foundation
appointed him the Secretary of
Garden High School.
His sudden and premature demise is
deeply mourned by all who knew
him.

won the gold in Archery at the 60th
State School Games in the under-17
category, and the silver in the mixed
team event in the 35th Sub-Junior
National Archery Championship held
at Jamshedpur on 22 January 2015.
He also won the bronze medal in
the senior category at the Kolkata
SAI Meet 2015 held on 16 June
2015.

Guardians Visit the School
When: 20 & 27 June 2015
Guardians of the pupils of Nursery 1 to Class 2 were
taken around the School so that they could see for
themselves the classrooms in which their children
study and the facilities they enjoy. 302 guardians
were taken around in groups by the teachers of the
Primary Department.
The guardians visited the Examination Halls,
Science Laboratories, Computer Laboratories, Art
& Craft Room, Audio Visual Room, Music Rooms,
Medical Rooms and Libraries, apart from various
classrooms.
The parents were impressed with what they saw and
thanked the school authorities for arranging this
tour.
