INTRODUCTION
“Mental illness is a major cause of morbidity as well as some
mortality, particularly amongst citizens at risk in South
Africa. Generally, mental health promotion and the provision
of services (for mental illness) have been neglected in the
past. Common manifestations are interpersonal violence,
gender and age specific forms of violence, trauma, neurosis
of living under continual stress, post traumatic stress
reactions and disorders, substance abuse, suicide and
adjustment related reactions and disturbances in children
and the elderly”. (White Paper for Transformation of the
Health System in South Africa, 1997:p135)

COURSE STRUCTURE
This course is a distance-based course and participants will
receive a comprehensive and user friendly study guide
developed by experts in the field covering all the modules.
No other textbooks will be required.
ASSESSMENT
Participants are assessed on the self-study component of the
course through means of an assignment.

The doctor-patient relationship.
The psychiatric interview, history-taking and mental
status evaluation.
Testing in psychiatry o Laboratory testing (e.g. blood tests).
o Psychometric testing (no prior qualification
required).
o Specialized diagnostic procedures (e.g. EEG,
SPECT scan).
Typical signs and symptoms.
Classification of mental illness as dictated by the DSM
IV, with emphasis on mood, anxiety and psychotic
disorders, organic mental disturbances and somatic
disorders.
Current therapies with emphasis on the pharmaceutical
approach.
Enlisting support systems.
Referrals.
Specific psychiatric conditions - geriatric, children, HIV+,
sleep disturbances.
Grief and the dying patient.
Substance abuse and dependency.
Psychiatric emergencies - trauma and suicidal tendency.

CANCELLATIONS:
FPD reserves the right to cancel or postpone a course. Applicants will be informed and all
