Good News from Memorial
Congratulations to MHS! Operation On Time initiative is making a difference. During the period from
September 1 - January 2, the number of discipline referrals for tardies at Memorial has dropped from 225 to 91
compared to last year. Way to go Old Abes! Keep up the good work!
Bright Ideas
Being punctual is a life-skill that all of us may struggle with from time to time. At MHS we want to help
students be mindful that forming good habits will transfer with them through adulthood. Being
respectful of other people’s time as well as your own is an important habit. You can help your child
meet the expectation of arriving on time by encouraging them to establish routines, get enough sleep,
and set their own alarm clock. A young adult who learns to be responsible for time management will
find the transitions after graduation much easier.

2015-16 Course registration Freshmen registered with the help of the counselors during their English classes
on Tuesday, February 3. Sophomores and Juniors register on their own from home or from a computer at
school February 3-9. An email was sent to all Sophomores, Juniors, and their guardians with registration
instructions on Monday, February 2.
Work-based learning opportunities, such as job shadows and mock interviews are available for all high
school students, grades 9-12. Internship opportunities, such as Co-op and Youth Apprenticeship are
available for juniors and seniors. The Eau Claire Area School District is excited to partner with the Eau
Claire Area Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and other area school districts on a new, free,
work-based learning website—Your Future Chippewa Valley! As a result of the recent regional Skills Gap
initiative, many area businesses have “signed on” to allow high school students access to career exploration
and work-based learning opportunities! All students are highly encouraged to participate in at least one workbased learning opportunity during high school in order to explore a specific career cluster. More information
about the ECASD work-based learning program can be found by clicking here.
Valentine’s Day is approaching quickly! Chocolate ‘I Love You’ pops are being prepared! We are giving
you the opportunity to PRE-ORDER your chocolate to be sure you get what you need. Stop by Rm 1785 (ASL
Room) to grab a pre-order slip. Return the slip and money to Mrs. Galloy by Friday, Feb. 6th. There are only
150 pops available for pre-order. The rest will be sold during lunches on a first come first serve basis on Feb.
13th.
Fruit Snacks needed The ACT testing for juniors is right around the corner. We
would like to provide fruit snacks to the students to support them during the long
testing hours. If you would like to donate to this, please drop off fruit snacks or
money in the Attendance Office by February 23rd. Thank you for your
consideration.
Due to a conflict in schedules, the Improv Show scheduled for Friday, February 6, in the Little Theatre will
not be taking place. That show has been rescheduled for Thursday, February 12.
Parking permits are now available for 2nd semester. See Ms. Minch.
eTranscripts are convenient and easy! We have a new online service through Parchment Exchange where
you can request an official high school transcript and send it to the destination of your choice with just a few
clicks. Parchment sends your high school transcripts electronically, securely, and confidentially. All current
students were emailed a registration code to their school email account (studentid#@ecasd.us). Please use
this registration code to set up an account at www.parchment.com. Students under 18 years old will need
assistance from a parent/guardian to complete the registration process as parental consent is required. Three
easy steps 1) Register for a free account at www.parchment.com (click on the “SIGN UP NOW” red,
rectangle,) 2) Request your transcript, 3) Track your transcript. ECASD is no longer charging a transcript fee
for current students. Memorial High School will process your eTranscripts within two business days.
Questions? Visit www.parchment.com or contact the high school registrar at 715-852-6314.

Common Errors: Emigrate/Immigrate
To “emigrate” is to leave a country. The E at the beginning of the word is related to the E in other words
having to do with going out, such as “exit.” “Immigrate,” in contrast, looks as if it might have something to do
with going in, and indeed it does: it means to move into a new country. The same distinction applies to
“emigration” and “immigration.” Note the double M in the second form. A migrant is someone who continually
moves about.
Emigrate - verb- to leave or Exit a country.
Immigrate - verb - coming In to a country to live permanently.
My ancestors emigrated from Sweden on their path to immigrating to the United States.
