The National Anthem
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Pittsburg State University
Alma Mater
On the plains of Southeast Kansas,
‘Neath an ever cloudless sky,
Far away from surging ocean,
And the storm-bird’s plaintive cry;
With her prairies rolling Westward,
Where the buffalo once were great,
With her ensign proudly waving,
Stands our own Pittsburg State.
Refrain
Let us greet the Gold and Crimson
With a strong and cordial cheer,
Let our hearts be ever loyal
To our Alma Mater dear.

May 2016
Pittsburg State University is committed to the comfort and safety of all of our graduates and their guests and to making this a very
special and memorable occasion. Please assist us in doing so by turning off your cell phones and pagers. Also, please remain seated
throughout the entire ceremony to help ensure that all graduates get the recognition they have earned, whether they are first
or last to cross the platform today. Professional photographs will be captured of each graduates accomplishment. Each graduate
will be emailed and mailed free proofs. These photographs are available for viewing at www.gradimages.com. Ample time will be
available after the ceremony for you to take additional personal photos inside the arena. Thank you for your cooperation.
In accordance with the Kansas State Fire Marshal regulations, we request that you take a moment to identify two emergency exits
closest to you. We have checked these exits and the other emergency equipment in this building and verify they are available for use
in case of an emergency. In the case of an emergency, pay close attention to the announcer for important life safety information.

President’s Message
Welcome to the 2016 Spring Commencement ceremonies
at Pittsburg State University. This is the moment you’ve
looked forward to since you first enrolled at Pittsburg State.
Today, you can officially call yourself a Gorilla Graduate.
Today’s commencement ceremony is an important
milestone in your academic journey. You have distinguished
yourself as a scholar and demonstrated the desire
for knowledge that is necessary for success in life.
I’m honored to be able to share this moment with you, your family and friends.
On behalf of our faculty, staff and the Pittsburg State University community,
I congratulate you on your achievement.
Earning a degree is not easy. Class loads, financial questions and other worries may,
at times, have made today feel like an unobtainable dream. When the winds of doubt
blew, you held firm. You understood the value of a Pittsburg State education and the
importance of finishing what you started. I wish you the very best, and look forward
to seeing the many ways in which you make our world a better place.
The Class of 2016 has left an enduring mark upon this university. You helped build
new facilities, supported forward-thinking tobacco policies and ensured Pittsburg State
remains an academic destination of choice for future generations of Gorillas.
I thank you for choosing Pittsburg State University and hope you will return often.
Congratulations Class of 2016. As we say, “Once a Gorilla … Always a Gorilla!”
Sincerely,
Steven A. Scott, President
Pittsburg State University

2016 Outstanding Faculty
John Thompson, Xiaolu Wu and Clark Shaver
One of Pittsburg State University’s Dr. Robert K. Ratzlaff
Outstanding Faculty Award recipients for 2016 has known
he wanted to be a teacher since second grade, but the
others discovered their passion for teaching later in life.
The Outstanding Faculty Award recipients were announced
at the university’s Apple Day celebration on March 3.
John Thompson, an associate professor in the
Department of Automotive Technology is the third
generation of teachers in his family.
“It was on my list as long as I can remember,” Thompson
said. “When I was in second grade and my teacher asked
what I wanted to do when I grew up, I said ‘I want to be a
teacher.’”
Clark Shaver, an associate professor of electronics
engineering technology, came to teaching from the world
of business.
“I never planned to teach,” said Shaver, who was also a
Boy Scout leader. “I really enjoyed teaching the young men
and I thought, if I could do something like this full-time,
that would be awesome.”
Xiaolu Wu hadn’t planned on teaching, either. She
came to the U.S. from China in 2001 to earn her Ph.D. in
microbiology from the University of Illinois in Chicago.
“After I got my degree, I realized I really enjoyed the
interaction with people,” Wu said, “so I first found a job at
a local community college. That experience reinforced
what I felt about myself—that what I should do is teaching.”
Although they came to the profession on different paths,
they are all making a positive impact in the classroom and
thoroughly enjoying teaching.
The Outstanding Faculty Award begins with
nominations from students. The nominated faculty are
asked to fill out a questionnaire and the recipients are
8
chosen by a student panel. This year’s recipients agreed
that because it is student-driven, the Outstanding
Faculty Award has special meaning.
“I’m very honored and humbled,” Wu said. “I know
that my students are very busy and nominating me is not
something they need to do.”
Wu said she enjoys helping students discover their
passion.
“I think everyone has a gift and if a teacher is able to
help students find what they are passionate about, that’s
a great thing,” Wu said.
All three said that one of the most rewarding things
about their work is the relationships they are able to
build with students, both during their academic careers
and even later after they have graduated.
“I tell my students I’ll be Dr. Thompson or professor
Thompson to you for a few years while you’re here,
but the biggest benefit that I didn’t expect was the
friendships for life (that I’ve maintained) with those
students,” Thompson said. “It’s been the best thing in the
world.”
Shaver said the feedback he gets from former students
is special.
“What’s really been neat for me is the feedback I
get from people who have graduated—the notes saying
‘thank you for what you’ve done.’ That’s really the
gratifying thing about teaching,” Shaver said.
Thompson summed up all three of this year’s
honorees’ thoughts about teaching.
“I get the incredible journey of teaching stuff that I
love, that I’m super passionate about,” Thompson said. “I
love it! And then I get to meet students. It’s just a great,
great career and very rewarding.”
University Scholastic Honors
University Scholastic Honors graduates are designated by ribbons and medallions worn around the neck.
Red represents summa cum laude (requires a cumulative grade point average of 3.95); green represents magna cum
laude (requires a cumulative grade point average of 3.90); and white represents cum laude (requires a cumulative grade
point average of 3.85). University Scholastic Honors as listed in the Commencement Program are based on coursework
completed through the fall semester. Final determination of University Scholastic Honors graduates will be based
on coursework completed through graduation.

The Mace
and Medallion
Two symbolic
badges of authority,
traditional in many
European universities
and at some of the
oldest schools in the
nation, are being used
in the commencement
ceremonies. The
honor of carrying
the University Mace
at commencement is given to a faculty member with
extensive service to the university.
The Presidential Medallion is worn by the President
of Pittsburg State University.
In the Middle Ages, maces were used as weapons for
breaking the armor of enemies on the field of battle.
The use of maces as symbols for academic institutions
originated in England in the 1500s.
The university mace features four individual
medallions surrounded by brass, with a mahogany staff
sectioned by brass accents. The four medallions featured
on the head piece represent historic seals used by the
university during its first century of existence.
The current university seal is cast in bronze and
featured on a solid mahogany disc which rests on top of
the ceremonial mace.
The Presidential Medallion proudly displays the
names of every president who has provided leadership
and vision for our university. Again, the history of
Pittsburg State University is on display with the
inclusion of historical university seals on the chain of
office.
The past is symbolically connected to present by
the chain of office which connects to a bronze banner
displaying the name of the current president. An
antique bronze medallion showcasing the official seal of
the University anchors the chain of office.
The History of Academic Regalia
The robes, hats and hoods worn by faculty members
and graduates have historical origins and significance.
During the Middle Ages, scholars at the earliest English
and European universities wore wool or fur garments
to stay warm in drafty stone buildings that were poorly
heated. Most wore cloaks that included a hood that
could be pulled up to keep their heads warm. The
current academic gowns and hoods were adapted from
both secular and clerical garments of the time.
The style of academic dress most frequently worn
in the United States dates back to colonial times. The
sleeves of the robes vary, depending on the degree held
by the wearer. The head covering most commonly used
in the United States is the square, tasseled “mortarboard.”
The hood is the most distinctive feature of American
academic dress. Hoods are lined with the colors of the
institution that awards the degree, and may be faced with
the color designating the degree awarded. As you observe the hoods worn by candidates for
graduate degrees, note that the colors of Pittsburg State
University are embodied in the lining of the hood (crimson
and gold), and the velvet trim indicates the degree (e.g.,
gold for Master of Science). The colors of the hoods of
faculty and guests are those of the institution conferring
the degree.
The Pittsburg State
University Seal
The Pittsburg State University
Seal, redesigned in 1994, reflects
the mission of instruction,
research and service and
also symbolizes the history,
traditions, and future of the University.
The first circle from the outside represents the
University’s future. The second circle identifies the
University’s name; the wheat sheafs symbolize the State
of Kansas. The third circle includes the initials and dates
for the previous names of the institution and identifies the
mission of Pittsburg State University. The fourth circle
contains an etching of the front entrance to Russ Hall with
its four columns, the symbolic image of the University.
Change and progress give evidence of the dynamic
development of Pittsburg State University from the
founding of the State Manual Training Normal School in
1903 to the recognition in 1923 of the transformation of
SMTN to Kansas State Teachers College, a comprehensive
college educating teachers for the nation’s elementary
and secondary schools. From the very beginning, some
graduates pursued careers in professional areas allied to
their teaching degree. In 1959, KSTC became Kansas
State College at Pittsburg, which recognized the expanded
mission to educate students in the arts and sciences and
in business, education, and technical fields for various
professions and careers. In 1977, KSCP became Pittsburg
State University to mark the transition from a college to a
university with a range of undergraduate majors, graduate
programs, and four organized schools in arts and sciences,
business, education, and technology. The University
embraced a common bond with all universities to pursue
instruction, research and service.
One constant in the ten decades of Pittsburg State
University is Russ Hall. Constructed in 1907 and opened
in January 1908, it became the landmark first building
that anchored SMTN as a permanent presence in higher
education in Pittsburg, the State of Kansas, and the
Nation. The doors to Russ Hall have admitted thousands of
students during the University’s history. Russ Hall forever
stands as a tribute to the bold vision of the founders.
We take with us
many memories –
beautiful spring days;
iconic campus buildings,
where generations of
students have studied
before us; and, especially,
the people we have met
along the way.
