Associate Professor Patrick Hannum Patrick Hannum is currently serving as an Associate Professor in the Joint and Combined Warfighting School (JCWS), Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC), National Defense University (NDU), Norfolk, VA. The JCWS conducts a 10 week resident course of instruction four times per year delivering Phase II Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) to over 1,000 military officers, international fellows and government civilians each year. He has over 38 years of federal service in the Department of Defense including 18 years of joint experience. His active military service involved 29 years serving as a ground combat officer in the United States Marine Corps with operational experience from the platoon to the Marine expeditionary force levels, including assignments with the reserve component. He served in all four Marine Divisions. He is a graduate of the USMC Amphibious Warfare School and the US Army Command & General Staff College. He served in a variety of command and staff positions including in the Operations Directorate of United States Atlantic Command and as the Commanding Officer, Combat Assault Battalion, 3d Marine Division. He has military and intergovernmental experience with multiple federal agencies to include the Department of State, US Customs and Border Protection, Drug Enforcement Agency and others. He has worked at the tactical, operational and strategic levels with partner nations including Japan, South Korea, Australia, Georgia and Mexico and has working experiences with officers from over 25 different nations. In the area of interagency operations, he served as the combatant commander’s representative to the United States Interdiction Coordinator (21 U.S. CODE § 1710). He holds numerous military awards including the Legion of Merit. His federal civilian service includes accreditation experience, serving as the chair and coordinator of three different Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff, Process for Accreditation of Joint Professional Military Education year-long selfstudy efforts; institutional research experience and extensive teaching experiences in a variety of joint competency areas. He holds a Postgraduate Professional Teaching License in the State of Virginia in multiple content areas and grade levels. His areas of interest and research include joint and multinational military operations and US military history with a focus on late Colonial period and American Revolution, and a particular emphasis on the Yorktown Campaign of 1781. In the area of education and teaching his focus is on reading and literacy issues. He holds a bachelor’s in Social Science from Youngstown State University, a Masters in Military Art & Science from the US Army Command & Staff College and a Master of Science in Education from Old Dominion University. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education from Capella University.
