SISTER PARISH UPDATE On Sunday, January 25, Fran Rago, one of the travelers from the October 2014 trip to Haiti gave a reflection of his experience in a poem that he wrote. This and Fran’s two other poems are available on the parish website (go to Community Outreach, then Our Partners where you’ll find St. Genevieve). There are some current pictures of the new church construction in Fouji, Zoranje. You can find them on the bulletin board at the back of our church, on the St. Patrick-St. Anthony Facebook page, or on the St. Patrick-St. Anthony website. The next trip to Haiti will be April 13-20. There will be an opportunity to see the progress of the new church construction. Call the parish office for more information (860-756-4034. Peace and All Good. Dear Parishioners and Friends at St. Patrick-St. Anthony and St. Genevieve, May the Lord give you peace. First, I want to ask whoever is praying for snow to stop. In our scripture this weekend, we begin with a sense of hopelessness in Job, move to commitment to the preaching of the Gospel in Paul and to the fundamental question of all Christians that is found in Peter’s statement “Everyone is looking for you.” We must ask ourselves what it is that we seek as we gather, commit ourselves to the life of the Gospel and recognize the hopelessness that is the reality for so many people throughout our world. This is a hopelessness that breeds the fear and anger that we find in so many places. We do not have to look too far to see it. In light of Job’s lament, perhaps we hear Paul differently: “For the sake of the Gospel, I am all things to all people.” For the sake of the Gospel, Paul speaks of compassion - the desire to be in communion with the one who struggles in life. For the sake of the Gospel we step aside from rash judgments and culturally conditioned responses to new situations to be with the one who lives with radical hopelessness. When we look at the world, our nation and our communities we are encouraged to see with new eyes and hear with the heart of compassion. What are we looking for in Jesus? We find the one who is healer, teacher, prophet, who eats with sinners, who tenders forgiveness and who calls to life. We find the one who gives himself. Having made that discovery, we are set free to live in his love and like Simon Peter’s mother-inlaw to get up and serve. We serve not to get something or to make up for something but because we are graced to share our gifts with the community. One of the hallmarks of this giftedness for our community is our partnership with the House of Bread. This week the House of Bread marked its 35th anniversary of serving the hungry who are a very real part of our life. This service includes meals to the hungry, and the hunger for giving that is met by serving the meals, knowing the people, and sharing the stories that make this a community that is faithful to being a house of bread for all. I especially thank Sisters Maureen and Theresa for the vision and dedication that has made this ministry a reality for so many people. This ministry has evolved from a coffee pot and station wagon to multiple ministries including a day shelter, housing, education, and childcare. Congratulations and continued blessings in this wonderful imitation of Jesus who fed the hungry on the mountainside. I thank all who give of themselves and are nurtured in this ministry. ● Community Sunday is a time to meet in the Urban Center after Mass for coffee, donuts, blood pressure screening and conversation. Additionally our Community Sunday Hosts are responsible to set up, replenish and clean up. Can you imagine being part of this unique team after the 8, 10 or 11:45 Masses? If so, please contact Trudi in the parish office for more information. ● There are many opportunities to use your specific gifts and talents within our parish and the larger community. To find out the possibilities, please contact Trudi in the Volunteer Ministry office. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Like St. Paul in the second reading, the good steward can say, “I do all that I do for the sake of the gospel in the hope of having a share in its blessings.” LIVING STEWARDSHIP We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who use their gifts of healing and forgiveness to help repair relationships in families beset with divorce, death, dysfunction or abuse.
