NREL Graduate Student Summer Session in Energy Systems
NREL Graduate Student Summer Session in Energy Systems Integration 2015
Requisition # 4131
Deadline for applications is February 13, 2015
JOB DESCRIPTION
The DOE National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Energy Systems Integration Directorate is offering a limited
number of graduate student research opportunities through its Graduate Student Summer Session (GSSS). This new
program is designed to stimulate interest in interdisciplinary energy systems studies by enabling selected students to
carry out an intensive research project at NREL’s Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF), which can be applied to the
student's graduate thesis. The inaugural GSSS will take place from May 26 to July 31, 2015. Students will be
compensated for their time.
Positions are available to students interested in any field of science, engineering, or technology conducive to the
activities of NREL’s Energy Systems Integration (ESI) Directorate. Each student will be teamed with a NREL scientist
mentor with parallel scientific interests. NREL mentors can be drawn from any of the participating ESI research groups as
follows:




Power Systems Engineering
Transmission and Grid Integration
Distributed Energy Systems Integration
Resource Assessment and Forecasting
Thermal Systems Integration
Fuel Systems Integration
Water and Wastewater Systems Engineering
High Performance Computing
Data Analysis and Visualization

The GSSS begins with a one-week orientation session to the concepts of energy systems integration and the challenges
of incorporating high levels of energy efficiency and renewable energy into current energy systems. You will then meet
with your mentor to begin your research project. During the program there will be a lecture series aimed at current
popular energy systems related topics. To complete the program, students are required to produce final oral and written
reports on their summer research activities.
NREL is a national laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy
Efficiency & Renewable Energy, operated by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
The program is open to students enrolled in accredited U.S. graduate programs in the Earth, physical or biological
sciences, mathematics, or engineering disciplines. Preference will be given to students who have completed at least one
year of graduate study.
Students must commit for the full ten-week period (May 26 – August 7, 2015).
