He showed tremendous potential and displayed exceptional commitment to his work and to NESPAK. The gold medal along with a cheque of Rs. 25000 as a token of recognition shall be awarded to him later. NESPAK pays tributes to Prof. Abul Kalam, ZA Nizami The NESPAK Management offers its sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing away of two eminent personalities – Prof. Abul Kalam, former Vice Chancellor NED University and Z.A. Nizami, former Chancellor Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET), Karachi. NESPAK Managing Director Asad I. A. Khan paid glowing tributes to both the scholars who dedicated their lives for the cause of education and well-being of humanity. Asad recounted the services of both stalwarts, who were instrumental in promoting architecture and engineering education in Pakistan. Both these luminaries will long be remembered. NESPAK to develop National Flood Protection Plan-IV NESPAK in association with Deltares of the Netherlands has signed a consultancy services agreement with the Project Management & Policy Implementation Unit (PMPIU) of the Ministry of Water & Power, Government of Pakistan for the Development of National Flood Protection Plan-IV (NFPP-IV) and Related Studies to enhance capacity building of the Federal Flood Commission. On behalf of NESPAK, Dr. Mansoor A. Hashmi, Vice President/Head Water Resources Division and Asjad Imtiaz Ali, Chairman Federal Flood Commission/Project Director Water Sector Capacity Building and Advisory Services Project (WCAP), signed the agreement on May 21, 2013 in Islamabad. The project studies 2 commenced as per the contract agreement from June 20, 2013. M. Masood Asif, General Manager Water Resources Division, who prepared and won the proposal, has been nominated as the Team Leader of the project. The project is funded by the World Bank under WCAP. There are four main components of the project studies, which include preparation of the National Flood Protection Plan for the next 10 years, inventory of flood protection works constructed so far all over Pakistan, flood inundation maps, and capacity building of the Federal Flood Commission. nespaknewsreport PROJECT NEWS NESPAK wins USAID funded project in Sindh NESPAK Karachi office has won architectural and engineering services for the USAID-funded Sindh Basic Education Program (SBEP) - Milestone Monitoring Services for the construction of schools in Sindh through an open competition. According to the details, the 2010 floods affected approximately 5,000 schools in Sindh, out of which 2,500 schools were completely destroyed. This natural catastrophe hindered the education process of thousands of children in Sindh and other parts of Pakistan. In order to improve access to schools, quality of education in flood-affected districts and restore public confidence in the public education system, USAID offered its support to the Government of Sindh (GoS) for the construction of new facilities to replace damaged schools in seven priority districts in the northern area of Sindh. These districts included Jacobabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Kashmore, Kamber Shahdadkot, Dadu, and Khairpur besides selected towns of Karachi like Gadap, Lyari, Orangi, Kemari and Bin Qasim. USAID will provide financial support for the construction of an estimated 90 to 140 new schools. NESPAK's scope of work, as a lead partner with its associates (Associates in Development and TECHRED), consists of services required for monitoring the achievement of payment milestones identified in fixed amount reimbursement agreements between USAID and the GoS with following details: preparation of a milestone monitoring plan (which shall also serve as the equivalent of a Performance Monitoring Plan for this Task Order) for all construction activities under Components I and II of the SBEP. The plan will include appropriate inspection schedules, standard inspection forms, and guidelines for inspectors, monitoring of environmental compliance, monitoring of quality assurance by the contractor providing architectural & engineering services for the construction of schools and shall provide the contractor and USAID with any review comments and suggestions for improvements. The Milestone Monitoring Plan shall also identify specific tests to be conducted by the contractor to verify the accuracy and quality of testing being performed by the A&E services contractor and the GoS contracted construction firms. Various concept plans of USAID schools Restoration of flood damages in Southern Punjab NESPAK has been tasked with the evaluation and construction supervision of flood damages in Southern Punjab, which were occurred in 2010. The works include 26 provincial and 87 district roads scattered in D.G. Khan, Rajanpur, Muzaffargarh and Layyah Districts. M. Hussaan Irshad, Principal Engineer H&TE Division, has been assigned the project management of these works. NESPAK established two residences to cover these four districts. The project was taken as a challenging job to restore the roads as early as possible to facilitate the general public. NESPAK wins PTCL seven core sites project NESPAK Building Services Division (BSD) has won a project related to the survey of power and environment upgrades at seven core sites in PTCL network located in Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Karachi. The scope of services includes a detailed survey, planning, design, cost estimates, BOQ, bidding documents, bids evaluation and resident supervision. Engineer Muhammad Kamran Nasir is the Project Manager. The project is expected to be completed by December 2013. PTCL has also registered NESPAK in the capacity of a large sized vendor. Haris Farooqi and Chief Justice Dost Muhammad with other officials NESPAK Building Services Division (BSD) signed an agreement with the Communication and Works (C&W) Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to provide design and supervision services for the replacement of an HVAC plant, lifts, firefighting system and installation of a heavy duty generator at Peshawar High Court. Muhammad Haris Farooqi, Sr. Engineer BSD, is the Project Manager. The project cost is Rs. 480 million. Earlier, Muhammad Haris Farooqi and Engineer Muhammad Furqan gave a presentation to Dost Muhammad Khan, the Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court on the above project. The honorable Chief Justice lauded the expertise and professional approach of NESPAK. Landfill site at Lakhodair, Lahore NESPAK signed an agreement with the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) for the construction of a landfill site at Lakhodair, Lahore. The scope of services includes engineering design review, design vetting and construction supervision. Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has also awarded additional work for design of electrical and structural components of Lakhaodair site. 3 nespaknewsreport PROJECT NEWS Services for Rs. 15 billion irrigation projects extended Shakeel Ahmad Toor, Deputy Secretary Technical Punjab Irrigation Department and Syed Imran Waheed, GM/Head Construction Management (CM) Division NESPAK, signed the Addendum No.1 to the contract for consultancy services related to Annual Development Programme (ADP) irrigation projects on February 1, 2013. The consultancy services were initially awarded to NESPAK for a period of three years up to September 2012, which have been extended up to September 2015. NESPAK has been providing design review, monitoring & construction supervision services for the irrigation projects under ADP since 2009. The projects included irrigation rehabilitation systems spread all over Punjab with an outlay of Rs. 15 billion. Major civil works Mangla Dam Raising Project Baseline Inspection completed Baseline Inspection team at the Emergency Spillway The task of Baseline Inspection of Mangla Dam Raising Project started in September 2012, was accomplished in June 2013. Field works for the sedimentation survey were carried out from September 2012 to February 2013. Site visits by all the experts related to concerned disciplines were completed by April 28, 2013. Preparation of report by MJV is in progress. Meanwhile, replenishment work of existing Riprap from El 1170 ft to El 1195 ft on upstream side of Main Dam and Intake Embankment was completed on May 25, 2013 and only allied activities are in progress. 4 comprise lining of 500 km of canals, rehabilitation of 1070 km of canals, rehabilitation/remodeling/ reconstruction of 993 hydraulic structures i.e., head regulators, xregulators, falls, cross drainage structures, cattle bath stations, inlets and hundreds of bridges. The quality of works being monitored by NESPAK is excellent and the projects/ schemes are being timely completed according to the standard specifications. Pakistan's first National Centre on MLARR launched The World Bank and Australian Aid (AusAID), in association with NESPAK and University of the Punjab (PU), launched Pakistan's first National Centre on Management of Land Acquisition, Resettlement and Rehabilitation (MLARR) at the Institute of Social and Cultural Studies, PU, on April 9, 2013. Similar setups have been established at BRAC University Dhaka, Bangladesh and Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad. All three national centres were launched jointly through a video link in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. The World Bank and AusAID participated in this ceremony from New Dehli, India, whereas; Centres participated from their representative institutions. Irfan-ul-Haq, GM/Head and Imran-ul-Haq, Pr. Engineer from Environment and Resettlement Section, GT&GE Division represented NESPAK. The Centre will be dealing with the courses/activities related to MLARR during the planning and implementation of various development projects. Long-term courses will be offered in the Centre and short-term courses will be conducted at NESPAK. Earlier, a second round of training on MLARR in Pakistan under the World Bank project, Professional Capacity Building Program, was conducted at NESPAK House, Lahore from April 16 to 18, 2013. Asad I. The Rs. 18.15 million project consisted of an additional floor at the 2nd level of the building. The scope of work included detailed design and construction supervision with complete architecture, interior, plumbing and electrical works. The design is based on economical and efficient use of existing space, and use of clean and durable materials. M. Arif Changezi, GM/Head A&P Division Karachi was Project Manager and Rashid Hussain, Sr. Engineer, acted as Resident Engineer. NESPAK in association with ADPI, France has been awarded reconstruction/up-gradation of main runway at the Jinnah International Airport (JIAP), Karachi. NESPAK won this project in competition with other local and multinational consultants. The scope of works includes master planning and detailed design of major airside components such as runways, taxiways, airfield lighting, NAVAIDS and other related utility networks. Upon completion, the JIAP will be the second airport in Pakistan after New Benazir Bhutto International Airport (NBBIA), Islamabad that will be capable of handling the Airbus A380 aircraft. Earlier, NESPAK-ADPI designed the runways and other infrastructure for the NBBIA. The JIAP runway reconstruction project is being undertaken by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority and is expected to cost around Rs. 2 billion. Extension of Terminal Building at Bacha Khan Airport, Peshawar The Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan has hired NESPAK for planning and design of an extension of Terminal Building at Bacha Khan International Airport, Peshawar. The project will help ease congestion at the Peshawar Airport. The scope of works includes designing of a separate area for domestic arrivals and departures and renovation/remodeling of existing terminal building for international arrivals and departures. This extension work is expected to be completed by the end of 2014 at an estimated cost of Rs. 300 million. NESPAK will also provide construction management and supervision services. Extension of Terminal Building at AIIAP NESPAK is undertaking the planning and design of an extension of terminal building at the Allama Iqbal International Airport (AIIAP), Lahore. The terminal building, which was designed by NESPAK in the 1990's, requires extension due to increasing international passenger traffic in Lahore. The scope of works includes extension and renovation/remodeling of immigration areas at both Level-1 and 2 i.e., arrivals and departure respectively. This extension work will be undertaken by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority at an estimated cost of Rs. 260 million. NESPAK will also provide construction management and supervision services. Renovated Gynaecology Operation Theater at Civil Hospital Karachi Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority building NESPAK Architecture and Planning Division Karachi has won the competition for Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority's office building at Karachi through an open competition. Eight different consulting firms from all over Pakistan including NESPAK participated in the competition. NESPAK will provide design, master planning, bidding documents and top construction supervision services for the building. The project will be completed in two phases (Phase-1 and Phase-2) having a total covered area of 5076 sqm. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 220 million. Extension in consultancy granted The Project Director, Irrigation Department, Government of Sindh extended the consultancy services of the joint venture of NESPAK-ECIL for the Lining of Distributaries and Minors Project in Sindh on June 4, 2013. 5 nespaknewsreport PROJECT NEWS NESPAK sets another milestone in Swat Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan Bridge inaugurated Gen. Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), inaugurated the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan Bridge in Swat on April 12, 2013. The Ambassador of UAE along with his officials and high ranking officers of the Pakistan Army attended the inauguration ceremony. Asad I. A. Khan, MD NESPAK, Dr. Tahir Mahmood Hayat and Basit Masud, Vice Presidents GT&GE Division, Dr. Mansoor Ahmad Hashmi, Vice President Water Resources and Ahsan Anwar, GM/Head Coordination Division, represented NESPAK. The bridge was completed at a cost of Rs. 325 million in 24 months with the financial assistance from the UAE government under its UAE Pakistan Assistance Programme (UPAP). NESPAK provided design and construction supervision services for the project. The COAS inaugurating the Al-Nahyan Bridge Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan Road Gen. Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani inaugurated the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan Road at Wana, South Waziristan Agency (SWA) FATA on June 20, 2013. The road is 49 km long and connects Wana with Angoor Adda, a locality on Pak-Afghan border. The road has significantly reduced the travel time. NESPAK provided engineering consultancy services for the project sponsored under the UPAP. Road Gujranwala was opened for the traffic in June 2013. NESPAK- ECSP joint venture provided detailed design and construction supervision services for the project. The flyover is a signal free facility and consists of two lanes on either side and three lanes each (At grade) for traffic coming from Rawalpindi and Lahore and entering into Gujranwala city in addition to two ramps on the Sialkot road. supported on transom and single pier. The construction activity was stared in December 2012 on the project having a cost of Rs. 4 billion. The construction of the flyover will facilitate the movement of freight, passengers traffic and will reduce traffic jams and noise as well as air pollution in Gujranwala. The length of main flyover is 1.755 km with a deck width of 17 meters. The length of ramps on Sialkot side is 460 meters. Inverted T girders have been used State Life Insurance Corporation office buildings NESPAK A&P Division Karachi has been awarded the design and construction supervision of State Life Insurance Corporation's (SLIC) office building at Rahim Yar Khan. NESPAK will also render construction supervision of another SLIC office building at Sialkot. The building at Rahim Yar Khan will cost Rs. 243.20 million and the scope of work involves overall planning, coordination, and control of the whole office building project from beginning to completion. The design comprises a basement + ground + 4 floors. The total covered area is 6168 sqm. Salient features of design include two modern lifts, firefighting arrangement, accessible design for the handicapped, parking in basement for 47 cars and ample motor bike parking in open space. Mumtaz Jilani, GM A&P Division Karachi, is the Project Manager and Iqbal Baloch is the Project Architect. The building at Sialkot is located at a prominent intersection of Kutchery road, and Highway Office Road. The project cost is Rs. 181.12 million. NESPAK is the lead consultant for the project while subconsultants are M/s International Design Group (IDG). The scope of work includes overall coordination, and control of construction supervision of the project. A view of the Gujranwala flyover after opening for traffic BISE Rawalpindi Morgah Campus completed The state-of-the-art, purpose-built Campus for the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE), Rawalpindi has been completed under NESPAK supervision at a cost of Rs. 750 million. The BISE has become functional at the newly constructed Campus located in Morgah, Rawalpindi. The project comprised a main building, one-window operations building, substation building and allied external development works like The design comprises a basement + ground + 4 floors. The total covered area is 3900 sqm. Salient features of design include a standby generator, landscaping and parking for 22 cars. Mumtaz Jilani, GM A&P Division Karachi is the Project Manager and Architect is Azizullah. water-supply, sewerage, drainage, roads, walkways, parking and green spaces. The plot measures an area of 42.4 kanals. The main building has six storeys covering an area of 26,900 sqm. There are provisions in structural system of the main building for addition of one floor above and four passenger lifts. The two-storey one-window operations building covers an area of 1,230 sqm. The single-storey substation building covers an area of 120 sqm. NESPAK has been associated with this project since 2006 and its scope of services included engineering design, preparation of bidding documents and resident construction supervision. The tour was aimed at carrying out pre-shipment inspection of the Dual Fuel Double Effect Absorption Chillers/Heaters being manufactured by M/s KTE - Kawasaki Thermal Engineering Company, Japan. Senior officials visit West Bank Bypass Project Sabir Hassan, Member Motorway-NHA, Ilmuddin Bullo, Chief Secretary Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K) and Sardar Yaqoob Khan, President of AJ&K, visited the West Bank Bypass Project, Muzaffarabad on May 9, 16, and 24, 2013 respectively. The dignitaries visited Earthquake Memorial Bridge of West Bank Bypass Project and were briefed about the salient features and the progress of works. They showed satisfaction with the pace of works being supervised by NESPAK. The Secretary expressed satisfaction with the quality and progress of works. He lauded the services of NESPAK engineers for undertaking flood protection works under tough site conditions. Nepali judges visit Federal Judicial Academy A high-level delegation of the Nepali judiciary headed by Keshari Raj Pandit, Chief Judge Court of Appeal, Patan, Nepal, visited the under-construction Federal Judicial Academy, Islamabad on June 19, 2013. Nasir Akhtari, Project Manager/Chief Architect Islamabad Office, gave a detailed design presentation followed by a visit to the featured areas of the Project. Imtiaz Ahmed Arain, General Manager and site staff of NESPAK were also present. The design of the project was highly lauded by the Chief Judge. Professionals visit projects in Muzaffarabad Abdul Basit, Vice President, Shaukat Qadeer, General Manager and Hafiz Muhammad Ahmad, Sr. Engineer of Structural Engineering Division, visited Muzaffarabad to review construction progress of bridges at Naluchi, Jalalabad, and Langarpura. Various construction related issues were discussed with the contractor and NESPAK supervisory staff for each site. The visit proved fruitful in resolving hurdles for speedy construction. The proposed site for bridge across river Jhelum near Thotha satellite town was also visited to fine-tune the bridge alignment. Visits to Lower Bari Doab Canal Improvement Project The Secretary Irrigation Department, Government of the Punjab visited the Lower Bari Doab Canal Improvement Project (LBDCIP) on April 20, 2013. Mansoor Ali, PM-LBDCIP, gave a detailed presentation to the Secretary at Balloki site, followed by site visit of project components. On April 25, 2013, a Progress Review Mission of Asian Development Bank (ADB) Abdul Basit, Vice President, Shaukat Qadeer, GM and Hafiz Muhammad Ahmad, Sr. Engineer with site staff during their visit to bridges projects in Muzaffarabad ADB Mission getting a briefing visited the LBDCIP site. Mansoor Ali accompanied the Mission during field visit for ICB-03, ICB-05 and BB/ICB-01 contracts. Mission was satisfied with the site progress. Suhail visits South and North Waziristan Agencies Suhail Majid, Chief Geologist GT&GE Division, visited South and North Waziristan Agencies from May 13 to 19, 2013. The visit was aimed at studying land sliding at Jandola, Kotkai, Zariwam and Makin. He also visited Razmak, where he held a meeting with the high-ups of FWO. He also visited the Attabad Lake to study slope failures and give remedial measures. Earlier, the approved cost of the project was Rs. 7,965 million, which has now been revised to Rs. 17,093 million. The QWSEIP is one of the mega projects approved by ECNEC in water supply sector. The objectives of the project are to develop and utilize all possible water resources, both surface and underground, in and around Quetta to meet the water requirements of inhabitants of Quetta City and to improve environmental condition of city through providing sewerage and drainage facilities. The revised scope of work consists of the following: Construction of Durrani Nullah, Quetta Southern Punjab Basic Urban Services Project NESPAK has been engaged for the design of treated effluent conveyance and disposal facilities from Suraj Miani Disposal Station to River Chenab as additional works under the Southern Punjab Basic Urban Services Project. In this regard, Aamir Munir, Project Manager held a meeting with the Managing Director WASA Multan and various Directors of WASA on May 31, 2013. Subsequently, they conducted a site visit to explore the probable alternatives for the design. Shahid Manzoor, PD NLC, briefed him that a minimum time frame of 24 weeks would be required to complete the remaining essential works at site for complete restoration of road and stabilization of the slope. Water Filtration Plants for Arsenic Removal Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Lahore, has engaged NESPAK for the installations of water filtration plants for the removal of arsenic from water at source (tube-wells) in Lahore. Under this project, 50 Nos. plants have been installed in different areas of Lahore. NESPAK scope of work consists of bidding documents, bid evaluation reports, vetting of construction drawings submitted by the Contractor and construction supervision. After the successful completion of 1st phase of the project, the Client has engaged NESPAK for further 50 Nos. plants in Lahore City. The project comprises construction of a diversion weir to divert flood water, two irrigation channels of 700 cusecs and 300 cusecs capacity on left bank and right bank respectively. The construction methodology for various components was discussed and necessary instructions were issued to the contractor in the light of observations during the site visit. Preparation of Weir Crest under Dhana Irrigation Scheme Third Party Validation of Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Schemes NESPAK continued to provide services on Third Party Validation of Water Supply, sewerage and drainage schemes under the Southern Punjab Development Program (SPDP). The project is spread in eight districts of South Punjab including Khanewal, Lodhran, Vehari, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, and Chiniot. The Government of Pakistan handed over the building to the Afghan government at a graceful ceremony held on April 10, 2013 at Bulkh University. Mohammad Sadiq, the Honorable Ambassador of Pakistan to Afghanistan, handed over the keys of the building to the Chancellor of Bulkh University and Parliament Speaker Mokamal Alakozai in the presence of high ranking Afghan Government functionaries. and leading members of Pakistani community in Afghanistan. The project consists of two engineering faculty blocks having three storeys each and basement, 58 classrooms as well as other ancillary facilities like water supply, sewerage and power generation system. The building has also been fully furnished by the Government of Pakistan. The covered area of the building is 17,000 sqm. It is the largest building of the Bulkh University which has accommodated five faculties. Liaquat Ali Khan Engineering Faculty Block Handing over keys of the building Liaqat Ali Khan Engineering Faculty front view Zurub Buraimi Road Project completed in Oman The construction work on the dualization of 17 km long Zurub-Buraimi Road Project has been completed at a cost of US$ 57 million in Sultanate of Oman. The project was planned, designed and supervised by NESPAK. It is an important link between the industrial port of Sohar and the border town of al Buraimi. The project comprised construction of a dual carriageway, service roads on both sides of dual carriageway, two vehicular underpasses and two flyovers. The project was completed in 39 months and is expected to be handed over to the Client shortly. NESPAK successfully completed its consultancy services for the World Bank funded Nishtoon Fishery Port Project at AlMahara Governorate in Yemen. Visit to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Mushtaq Ahmad, Chief Engineer and Fateh Sher, Senior Engineer of E&PHE Division visited Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in April 2013 for site visit and meeting with the Client to discuss newly awarded project of Storm Water Drainage System of Abu Arish city in Jizan Region. The design team inspected existing drainage system and identified critical areas of the city. Besides collection of data, they also guided survey team in the field regarding the survey, which is in progress. Dr. Omar A. Subeih presenting the Certificate of Merit to VP Karachi on completion of Nishtoon Fishery Port Project Quality Management System of NESPAK The Internal Quality Audits were carried out on design and construction management related activities by the Monitoring and Quality Control Division at various Divisions and offices and construction sites to ensure compliance with the Quality Management System. Audits reports were generated based on audit findings, which were later closed after ensuring implementation of the recommended corrective actions. The external surveillance audit was conducted by the Auditor and Technical Expert of the Moody International from June 26 to 28, 2013 at various Divisions at NESPAK House, Lahore, Islamabad Office and DM&R Division. The Audit was extensive and its objective was to measure the conformance of NESPAK Quality Management System to meet the requirements of ISO 9001: 2008 standard. The QMS was found compliant with requirements of ISO 9001:2008 standard by the Quality System Auditors and NESPAK was recommended for continued certification. NESPAK converts 196 contract staff to regular The NESPAK Management has approved regularization of 196 contract employees after assessing their performance in accordance with the rules and regulations. At the request of the CBA Union, NESPAK Managing Director Asad I. A. Khan made this decision and sanctioned regularization of employees from Grade 1 to 7, who were earlier working at NESPAK on daily wage basis and later on contract basis. After fulfilling due process and meeting the criteria of earning two very good reports and at least one good report, these contract employees of NESPAK were given regular status. In this regard, a ceremony was held at NESPAK House, Lahore wherein Asad I. A. Khan presented regularization letters to Lahore based employees. The project is envisaged to be completed in 14 months. Qatar Real Estate Investment Company has awarded to NESPAK design consultancy services for medium and high density residential complex at Mesaieed Industrial City. The project comprises 612 apartments, a supermarket, a clubhouse, and other ancillary facilities. It has total built up area of 93,000 sqm. NESPAK has also been engaged to provide design consultancy services for three convenience stores at Leabaib, Jeryan Junaihat and Sailiyah in Doha by AlMeera Consumer Goods. These stores have a built-up area of 5026 sqm, 3530 sqm, and 6048 sqm respectively. The salient features of the project include Al Meera Shopping Malls, warehouses, restaurants, fast food outlets, pharmacy, mobile shop, other shops and ancillary facilities. Project in Iraq Encouraged by past successes of NESPAK, the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of Iraq has awarded an irrigation project to NESPAK. The project called East of Gharaf aims at strengthening the war torn economy of Iraq by providing sustainable irrigation and drainage facilities to about 390,000 acres of land in Nassiriya and Kut Governorates, the area between Tigris and Euphrates rivers. NESPAK will render engineering consultancy services including updating topographic survey and detailed design of irrigation and drainage networks of the project area with full reclamation concept. Shafqat Hussain Bhatti, Head Irrigation & Drainage Section Water Resources Division, has been designated as Project Manager in Iraq. The duration of the project is 25 months. In acknowledgment of the services already rendered by NESPAK in Iraq during 1981-1991, the Ministry of Water Resources Government of Iraq has asked NESPAK to submit proposals for three more projects for providing consultancy services for irrigation & drainage networks, which are under process and will be submitted shortly.
