To register please call the office. 2 Dear parish family, 6th Sunday Ordinary Time B As the Church anticipates the Season of Lent, the evening before Ash Wednesday is called "Fat Tuesday" or Shrove Tuesday. French word for it “Mardi Gras” which has become more popular and wildly celebrated but unfortunately very far removed from its original meaning and intentions. In Italy they called it “Carnivale” from the Latin "carne vale" which means "farewell to meat" or "farewell to flesh" indicating the end to certain pleasures has come. Hence the custom of consuming rich food on this day as the faithful prepare for time of fasting, abstinence, confession and penance. Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Carnivale, all mean the same. But we see now how the popular culture corrupts the original intent of the custom. Ironically, the English word “Carnival” means the opposite of what it originally meant. We’ll celebrate “Fat Tuesday” (evening of February 17) here in our parish but in a way fitting to the church season we are about to enter. Rather than just vain party, it is a party with spirituality. Rather than just eating rich food for ourselves, we eat sharing food with our community. It is a pot luck party with the live band from Adore Ministries. We titled this community event as “ROAD TO THE RESURRECTION!” Praise and Preparation for Lent. Ennie Hickman and the Robbie Seay Band will be here to entertain us in music of praise and give us some words of evangelization. They are lay Catholic evangelists and their Band plays in Catholic Youth and other Christian gatherings to proclaim the message of Christ thru music. So please do not miss this event; bring food, your family and friends. Let’s have a good party this Tuesday evening and get fat, no not your belly but fat with the joy of community spirit and the enjoyment of gospel music and message. But yes we can eat big that night for the following day is Fast and Abstinence, Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of obligation but a very important Church celebration that solemnly commences the season of Lent. Ashes are applied to our forehead in the sign of the cross as the words, "Remember, you are dust and to dust you shall return" are spoken to us. The other formula which is used, "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel" emphasizes our call to continual conversion and holiness of life. This act symbolizes our mortality as well as our need for ongoing repentance. It is a reminder that this life is short and merely a foreshadowing of what we shall become through the redemption of Jesus Christ on the cross. The work of our redemption will not be complete until we are raised from the dead, in resurrected bodies like His own and called to the eternal communion of heaven. As we gather on this last Sunday before Lent, we are challenged by words of St. Paul in our second reading “to do everything for the glory of God.” Further, he urges us “to work for the common good rather than our own.” What valuable lessons for us and for our country! May our prayer can be for such selflessness and be the fruit of our coming Lenten season. Blessings to you and have a good week! Fr. Padre Tony ST.
