Dear Parents,
I would like to invite you to a presentation called “PARCC 411” here at Pioneer Path School. I am
hoping this will help you better understand the Common Core Standards as well as the new PARCC
test which replaced the ISAT. There will be two different times and I hope one will best accommodate
your schedule. (Tuesday, February 24 @ 6:30 or Wednesday, February 25 @ 10:00.) During this
presentation, I will let you know what our teachers are doing to help your students get ready for the
test, while still focusing on the Common Core. Please click on the link below to let me know if you are
interested in attending.

ART news...from Mrs. Verbic
Calling all "green" art students! Mrs. Verbic will be hosting a 3rd
grade "Go Green" club on Tuesday afternoons during recess. Our group
will study and create a variety of items that encourage healthy living. We will creatively
use resources around us to make an impact on our school community and to inspire
healthy, positive lifestyles. Interested students should see Mrs. Verbic for an
"application" as soon as possible. Our first meeting will be Tuesday, February 24. Please
note: Choir members have permission to attend Go Green. In order to accommodate
all interested students, participants may be assigned to attend only a certain number
of sessions. Thanks in advance for understanding!
TECHNOLOGY NEWS……..
Life Skill/PARCC Skill
There is suddenly a lot of attention being focused on students’ keyboarding
skills as the PARCC test looms before us a mere month away. According to the Common Core
State Standards (W.4.6, W.5.6. and W.6.6), students in grades 4, 5, and 6 should be able to type
1, 2, and 3 pages in a single sitting, respectively. It has been generally assumed to mean those
pages are double spaced and that a “single sitting” is approximately one hour. Clearly keyboard
familiarity and keyboarding and typing skills are going to be important for competing the
PARCC test, but these are skills that are also important to success in school, on the job, and in
life in general.
Here in Channahon School District, students in grades K-1 practice their keyboarding skills
using KidKeys; students in grades 2 – 8 have accounts on the free website TypingWeb.com.
Students get plenty of keyboarding instruction and practice time through their computer classes
and other classroom activities. At home, you can help foster your own child’s keyboarding
familiarity and skills by having your child use keyboarding software or free keyboarding
websites.
Give The Gift of Love – Be Good to Your Child’s Heart
Keeping your family's heart healthy and beating strong involves healthy habits like eating healthy,
fresh, low fat foods and daily exercise.
This is something that children can benefit from too. We know that behaviors are formed during
childhood so it is very important to help children establish healthy heart habits while they are young.
Our heart is a muscle that works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As the kids say "24-7"! It
deserves a little special attention.
Heart Healthy Tips for the Whole Family
Here are some heart healthy tips that will keep your cholesterol at a healthy level :
Increase Fiber Intake
•
Serve oatmeal for breakfast and switch over to 100% whole wheat bread
•
Add beans to soups or offer as a side dish
•
Place sliced fruit and veggies on the table for your child
•
Offer fresh fruit smoothies using low-fat yogurt
Decrease Saturated Fat Intake
•
Offer low-fat mozzarella or Swiss cheese
•
Serve fish and chicken breast more often than red meat
•
Stir fry and bake your meals instead of deep frying
•
Serve vegetarian meals and skip the meat; your child can get plenty of protein from 1% milk,
non-fat yogurt, beans, peanut butter, and tofu.
•
Use spray dressings vs. traditional Thousand Island or Blue Cheese salad dressing
Increase Intake of Healthy Fats - Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated fats
•
Cook with olive, safflower, or canola oil (use small amounts as oils are high in calories)
•
Offer 2 tablespoons of cashews on top of yogurt; all nuts have healthy fat in them. (nuts can
be a choking hazard so avoid offering to young children or children with nut allergies)
•
Seeds can be another great source for healthy oils. You can add ground flax seeds into a fruit
smoothie or on top of their favorite cereal or salad.
•
Add avocado slices to a salad
Daily Movement – Get Your Heart Rate Up
•
Get the dance music on and dance with your child
•
Turn off the computer games and play basketball with your child
•
Go for a walk with your child
•
Sign your child up for swimming or gymnastics at the local recreation department
•
Prioritize your day so that movement happens – mark it down on the calendar as a reminder
We now know that changes in the heart can begin at a very young age. By making these simple
little changes, you can keep family heart healthy. Remember, small changes do add up!

Soles for Sports!!!!!
**Do you have some barely used soccer cleats from that one season you wanted to try out the sport?
**Maybe you outgrew a great pair of track shoes before the next season and they are just taking up
closet space!
**Do you, or someone you know, need a pair of good athletic shoes, but don’t want to invest too much
money in a sport you’re not certain you’ll stick with yet?
WE HAVE A GREAT “SOLE”UTION for those problems!!!!
Some great Beta Students: Gino Capecci, Cooper Maskel, and Seth Joder along with their families have
initiated a collection this month of used, but still good quality, athletic footwear!!
The Channahon schools and Channahon Park District have collection boxes throughout this month. We
are looking to collect slightly used, but in good condition, athletic shoes.
Specifically: gym shoes, sport specific shoes, cleats
From the shoes that are collected our Beta members will clean them up and sort them and there will be
an opportunity for anyone who wishes to “shop” collected shoes.
Shopping Soles for Sport:
Saturday, February 21st, 1-4 P.M.
Chanahon Jr. High-multi-purpose room
So go through your closets and sports tubs to see what you can donate and bring those shoes in to any
of the collection boxes for drop off!
