Head of the Institution/Dept.
NIT Calicut, established in 1961 as Regional Engineering
College, is recognized as an institute of national importance
by the Govt. of India as per the NIT Act 2007. The Institute
has eleven departments, six centers and three schools,
offering ten undergraduate and twenty-four postgraduate
programmes apart from Ph.D. The institute has good
infrastructure in computing, information technology,
laboratories and central library including digital library.
Calicut, also known as Kozhikode, found a place in the world
history with the discovery of the sea route to India in 1498 by
the Portuguese navigator Vasco Da Gama. Basking in the
idyllic setting of the Arabian sea on the west and the proud
peaks of the Wayanad hills on the east, Calicut is known for
its serene beaches, lush green countryside, historic sites,
wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, waterfalls and ayurvedic
treatment. Calicut is also the hometown of prestigious
institutions such as NITC, IIMK, Calicut Medical College,
NIELIT, IISR, CWRDM, Kerala School of Mathematics etc.
Calicut is connected by direct trains/road/air to all major
cities in India. NITC is located about 22 kilometers north-east
of Calicut city, along the Calicut-Mukkam road.

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering was
established in June 1997 after trifurcating from the
Department of Electrical Engineering. The department offers
two post graduate programmes and an undergraduate
programme in Computer Science & Engineering, an MCA
programme and regular and part time doctoral degree
programmes.
The fast changing scenario in the Information Technology
necessitates the Department to actively extend its research
and development activities. The current research focus is on
areas like Image Processing, Compilers, Information Security,
Computer Architecture, Algorithms and Complexity,
Distributed Computing, Bio-informatics and Multi Agent
Systems.
The department has five separate research labs, common
laboratories with state of the art computing facilities and a
department library with reference books and other research
material. Being a forerunner in the field, the Department is
constantly modernizing its facilities to adapt itself to the
rapidly changing technological scenario.

About the programme
The last decade has witnessed a spurt in life science
research with the advent of high throughput
instrumentation technologies. Classical Biological
problems got transformed dramatically with the
emergence of Computational Biology as an active area
of research and development. Advances such as the
genome
sequencing
initiatives,
microarrays,
proteomics and structural genomics have pushed the
frontiers of human knowledge. The staggering volume
of data generated from different ‘omics’ experiments
has stymied integration of experimental procedures
and computational activities.
Big data analytics refers to the process of collecting,
organizing and analyzing large sets of data ("big
data") to discover patterns and other useful
information. Not only will big data analytics help us
to understand the information contained within the
data, but it will also help identify the data that is
most important. Big data analysts basically want the
knowledge that comes from analyzing the data.
The advent of sequencing technology has generated
very large amount of biomedical data, resulting in the
era of “Big Data” in biomedical sciences. This
workshop aims at giving an overview of
bioinformatics applications to big data in knowledge
discovery that can contribute to personalized
medicine. The next generation sequencing (NGS)
technologies are developed and explored to get th e
complete understanding of the biological mechanisms
for providing better treatment options for the
patients.
The main theme of this workshop is to understand the
significance of NGS data in discovering variants as
targets in complex diseases. In this wo rkshop the
participants will understand the principles and the
challenges of NGS, learn the different NGS data types,
obtain a clear understanding of the NGS data analysis
pipeline, and the use of Hadoop in the big data
analytics. The participant will receive hands-on
experience on handling two different NGS data types,
develop the analysis pipeline, and carry out
experiments. Each topic will be covered using set of
lectures, laboratory projects, discussions, and group
presentations.
