Before beginning the build, take a quick look over the checklist of materials and tools to make the experience as hassle free as possible. BOM - Review the Bill of Materials and check it against what you received in your package. If your Printrboard is labeled "Rev F", click here for the Rev F Simple Maker's Kit build instructions. If your Printrboard is labeled "Rev D", continue with this guide. Step 3 To separate wood parts, use a utility/shop/exacto knife on the plate connections. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 3 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 4 Attach part 1101 to 1100. Attach part 1103 and 1104 to 1102. Use M3 16MM screws and M3 hex nuts to anchor the wood parts Step 5 Add 1105 and 1106 to 1102 Attach this assembly 1100. There is a 2mm spacing between the tip of the motor shaft and top of GT2 pulley. Make sure to put a drop of threadlocker on each set screw before securing onto the motor shaft. Set screws will loosen over time if you do not use threadlocker. One of the two set screws needs to be secured to the flattened portion of the motor shaft. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 6 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 9 Large Kysan motor with GT2 pulley, acme nut, LM8UU bearing (x8), 24" end stop, zip ties (x16), M3 16MM screws (x4), M2 10MM screws (x2), M3 10MM screws (x4), M3 hex nuts (x4), parts 1114, 1115, and 1116 Attach 1114 and 1115 with an M3 16MM screw and M3 hex nut. Use M3 10MM screws (x2) to attach the delrin nut to part 1115. Use M2 10MM screws (x2) to attach the 24" end stop to part 1115. Be sure to position the end stop as pictured, yellow wire to the right. TIP: Run the end stop wiring through the cable hole in part 1115 before screwing it down to the wood. NOTE: Do not over tighten the screws when attaching the end stop. The end stop can break if the screws are threaded down too far. Step 10 Zip tie LM8UU bearings (x4) to the under side of part 1116. Note the direction that the zip ties are placed. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Next, add LM8UU bearings (x4) to the top side of part 1116. Again, note the placement of the notches in the zip ties. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 7 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 11 Attach part 1116 to the 1114/1115 assembly with M3 16MM screws and M3 hex nuts (x3 each). Step 12 Attach the motor with M3 10MM screws (x4). Note the direction of the motor wiring. Zip tie the motor and end stop wiring together. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 8 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 13 Zip ties (x10), parts 1121, 1119, 1120, 1118, 1117, 1123, 1124, LM8UU bearings (x4), Large Kysan motors (x2), 6.5" 8mm rods, M3 16mm screws (x20), M2 10mm screws (x2), M3 10mm screws (x2), M4 12mm screws (x2), #6 washers (x6), 624 bearings (x2), M3 hex nuts (x18) Add GT2 pulley to the large motor. Again, be sure to tighten one of the set screws down on to the flat side of the motor shaft using a drop of threadlocker. TIP: A good way to get proper spacing between the GT2 pulley and the body of the motor is to place your testing square between them before tightening the set screw. Once the pulley position is set, remove the test square to continue the build. Attach the motor to part 1117 with M3 10mm screws (x2). Leads should exit to left as shown in third photo. TIP: Place an M3 hex nut at the top of wood part 1117 to be used in a future step. (green circle) © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 9 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 14 Add part 1118 and secure with M3 16mm screws (x2). It might be easier to insert the M3 nut that is needed to attach to part 1119 at this step. Attach another large motor to part 1119 with M3 10mm screws (x4). Note motor wires exit to left. Combine the 1118 and 1119 assemblies and anchor with an M3 16mm screw and M3 hex nut. Step 15 Zip tie LM8UU bearings (x4) to part 1120. Again, note the position of the zip tie notches. Direct the end stop wiring through the cable hole. Attach the end stop to part 1120 with M2 10mm screws (x2). Do not over tighten. Look carefully at the orientation of the X axis end stop (it opens to the right in photo #2). © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 10 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 16 Stack #6 washers (x2), 624 bearing, and #6 washer on to the M4 12mm screw. Repeat. Screw these stacks into part 1118. Step 17 Add parts 1120, 1123, 1121, and 1122 to the body. If your kit includes part 1127, substitute this for 1121. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 11 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 18 Direct the X axis and Z axis motor wire through the cable hole between parts 1117 and 1123. Note - You will only need about 4 inches of wiring through the hole of part 1117. Leave the remaining length of wiring in the motor compartment. Note: Label the connectors "x" or "y." This will make it easier for cable management later. Anchor with M3 16mm screws and M3 hex nuts. NOTE: Thread the M3 16mm screws into the hex nuts, but do not tighten them down yet. Wait until the body has taken shape at the end of step 19 to really tighten the wood parts into place. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 12 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 19 Close the motor compartment by securing part 1121 onto part 1123 with one M3 16mm screw and one M3 hex nut. Then secure 1121 to 1117 with another M3 16mm screw and hex nut. Attach the Printrboard with M3 10mm screws (x4). Note that the USB port and SD card slot are positioned away from part 1123. Now is a good time to plug the X end stop into "X-STOP" on the Printrboard. NOTE - do not over tighten the M3 10mm screws. Over tightening will flex the Printrboard and may cause Printrboard to snap/crack. Step 20 Place the 10" 8mm smooth rods (x2) into the rod notches in parts 1119 and 1121. You can either feed through the holes or snap them into place through the side opening. Holes are intended to be tight for extra rigidity of the Z and Y axis. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 13 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 21 Unscrew the nut on the Red/Black Power Adapter and add the adapter to part 1124. Thread the nut down on the back side of part 1124 to secure the power adapter to the wood. NOTE: You may have received a newer model power adapter that includes a yellow/black pigtail that goes between the inductive sensor and the Z endstop connector on the Printrboard. See How to install your Auto-Leveling Probe Power Adapter. for installation details. Add part 1124 to the body. Now is a good time to tighten down all of the M3 16mm screws around the body to hold it. Set the bot down on a flat surface to make sure that it is "square" before tightening. If you have a 6 pin Power Adapter for the Rev F Printrboard please make sure you have the correct adapter (photo #3). Correct adapter has black wiring on same side as clip. This is only for the 6 pin adapter, NOT for the 4 pin adapter pictured in photo #1. If you have the incorrect adapter click here to get the correct adapter. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 14 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 22 Zip tie the end of the GT2 belt to part 1125 with the teeth of the belt against each other. Next route the GT2 belt between the 624 bearings, down below and around the GT2 pulley, then back up over the left 624 bearing. Step 23 Run GT2 belt down between the 624 bearings, under the GT2 pulley, and back up over the other 624 bearing. Be sure that the teeth of the belt are facing up and aligned with the teeth of the pulley. Insert 6.5" 8mm rods through the LM8UU bearings for the X axis. Zip tie wood parts 1110 to the left rod ends. Zip tie 1111 to the right rod ends. Clip the zip ties. The rods will not sit inside of the slots. The wood parts will be seated on top of the rods. Attach wood part 1109 to 1110 with M3 10mm screw. Leave 1-2mm of threading. The end of this screw will actuate the X end stop. Attach wood part 1108 to the left bar end with M3 16mm screws and M3 hex nuts (x2 each). © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 15 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 24 Attach wood part 1112 to 1111 with M3 10MM screw. Attach wood part 1113 with M3 16mm screws and M3 hex nuts (x2 each). Attach the metal bed with M3 16mm screws (x4) Step 25 Route the GT2 belt through the slot and back in wood part 1108. Secure the end with a zip tie. Align the teeth of the GT2 belt for a better hold. Do the same with the other end of the GT2 belt, looping it through wood part 1125 and securing with a zip tie. Attach wood part 1125 to the right side bar end (wood part 1113), using M3 20mm screws and M3 hex nuts (x2 each). Leave some threading between 1125 and 1113 to allow for future tightening. TIP: Try to get the belt as tight as you can before attaching wood part 1125 to 1113. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 16 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 26 Use the Z Axis Coupler to attach the threaded Acme rod to the Z axis motor shaft. Secure with coupler set screws. Note - Use a drop of threadlocker on each set screw. Set screws will loosen over time if threadlocker is not used. Step 27 Stack #6 washers (x2), 624 bearing, #6 washer on to M4 12MM screw. Repeat. Secure the M4 12mm screw stack into part 1116. Insert the two 6.5" 8mm bars through the bearings (photo #2). Guide GT2 belt under the GT2 pulley and over the 624 bearing pulleys (photo #2). © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 17 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 28 Attach previous Y-Z assembly onto Y axis arm with four zip ties. Tighten zip ties as firmly as possible. Consider using a zip tie gun listed on recommended tools. Feed GT2 belt through part 1101. Secure belt to part 1101 with one zip tie. Step 29 Loop other end of GT2 belt through part 1126. Determine the proper length belt needs to be before securing with zip tie. Pull to the separation shown in photo #2, then zip tie. Now secure part 1126 to part 1102 with two M3 20mm screws and two M3 hex nuts. Tighten the M3 20mm screws until the belt has good tension. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 18 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 30 Take auto leveling probe and remove all nuts and washers. Insert probe through part 1103. Before you continue through part 1104, thread one nut onto the probe (photo #2). Now continue through 1104 and place second nut onto probe (photo #3). Step 31 You can use the provided wooden wrenches to tighten the auto leveling probe. You will ballpark the height for now until you finish the build. The top of the probe will be slightly lower than part 1103. The leveling probe cable will thread back past the motor through the small notch in piece 1102. Position it now as shown so that it's in place when you attach motor in subsequent step. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 19 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 32 Alu Extruder arm, 3/4" spring, 1 1/2" 6-32 screw, 6-32 hex nut Insert the 6-32 screw into the extruder arm. Tighten the 3/4" spring on to the 6-32 screw with the 6-32 hex nut. Step 33 Attach the idler arm onto the motor with one M3 20mm spaced with one #6 washer through the black delrin post (photo #2). Attach direct drive gear onto motor shaft with set screw. Use the provided 1.5mm allen wrench and place a drop of threadlocker onto set screw before tightening. Line up the drive gear with the center of the 625 bearing (photo #2). To see an exploded view of the Alu Extruder assembly, click here. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 20 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 34 Attach base of extruder onto part 1103 with three M3 10mm screws. Attach wood parts 1105 and 1106 with M3 16mm screws and M3 hex nuts. Attach fan onto parts 1105 and 1106 with two M3 16mm screws and two M3 hex nuts. Make sure to position the fan the same as in photo #3. NOTE: Screws may seem to long at this point and hit the end of the laser cut slot. Once you print and install the fan shroud underneath, these are the correct screw length. Step 35 Slide hot-end into extruder with wires oriented as in photo. Secure with M3 20mm screw in right side hole or extruder bottom. Screw sits in notch at top of hot-end to secure it. Add the large stepper motor and remaining extruder assembly with M3 20mm screws. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 21 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 36 Attach the Probe Extension cable to the Auto Leveling Probe. If you have the Red/White/Black extension cable, you will want to plug it in the direction of picture 1. (Blue to Black/ Brown to White/ Black to Red). Always match the wires from the plug end of the cables (as if the probe were being plugged straight into the board) before plugging them together. If the probe and the probe extension are plugged in backwards, you WILL ruin your z probe! © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 22 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 37 Connect hot end power cable to hot end power lead, hot end thermistor cable to hot end thermistor lead, and lastly fan extension cable to fan wiring (photo #1). If you're having a hard time connecting the fan extension, click here. Take a zip tie and secure all wiring to slot in part 1105. Bring all wiring back to the Y axis motor and secure with zip tie (photo #3). Step 38 Place Y axis assembly onto the Z axis 8mm rods. You will immediately hit the acme threaded rod. Turn the threaded rod counter clockwise to thread into the acme nut and lower the Y axis assembly. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 23 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 39 Before you wrap all of the wiring, make sure to label each connector so you will know what they are once they're in the printrboard area. Take all of your wiring and wrap with masking tape. Feed wiring through the open area between the Z axis motor and part 1123. You will need to feed the batch of wiring through the rectangular slot in part 1117 in order to access the printrboard. Remove the masking tape once in the printrboard area. © 2015 help.printrbot.com Page 24 of 27 Simple Maker's Edition (1405) Step 40 Begin wiring the Printrboard. Yours may be green instead of black. Not to worry, all of the connections and capabilities are the same. NOTE: Be sure to check your wiring against the picture to verify that nothing is plugged in incorrectly. You will see that the Y and E motors are plugged in differently than the X and Z motors.
