Naval Research Board Defence Research and Development Organisation Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India About this workshop Friction stir processing (FSP) is considered as the one of the most significant developments for materials processing in the last decade. In the relatively short duration after its invention, FSP has found widespread applications in fabrication, processing and synthesis of metallic materials. The process has been used as a generic tool for grain refinement, microstructure homogenization, property enhancement in cast alloys and composite fabrication including surface, nano and in situ composites in aluminium and magnesium alloys. The materials processed by FSP have shown fascinating properties in many instances. Scope of the workshop • Physical metallurgy of Al alloys • Metal Matrix Composites • Friction stir processing (FSP) and its applications • Microstructure modification and homogenization by FSP • Processing of composite by FSP • Grain refinement and microstructure evolution during FSP The purpose of this workshop is two-fold: first, to provide an account of the landmark developments in the area especially with respect to aluminium alloys and composites and discuss the state-of-the art and second to disseminate the findings of a research project carried out at IIT Madras on “Development of high strength and ductile Al alloy based composite in solid state by friction stir processing”. This workshop aims to bring together some of the distinguished researchers in the country to speak on friction stir processing, aluminium alloys and metal matrix composites in general and composite fabrication by friction stir processing in particular.
