The Woodlands High School Ninth Grade Campus Important Dates February 5 – 10: Classroom visits February 9th: Parent Information Night at 7:30 p.m. at TWHS Senior Campus. Arrive at 6:30 p.m. to visit with elective and core teachers February 11th: BLITZ DAY February 17th: ROTC Info Night – 7 p.m. at TWHS Senior Campus LGI More Important Dates February 19th: HELP SESSION 4pm to 7 pm at the SENIOR CAMPUS February 20: ALL COURSE SELECTION SHEETS are due to the Language Arts teachers April 6th: Athletic Information Night – 6:30 p.m. at TWHS Senior campus gym. This is a required meeting for all students (and parents) who sign up for a sport This one is in red. May 8 – FINAL DEADLINE for all course changes (electives and core placement changes) CISD FOUNDATION PLAN with Endorsement o o Beginning with the class of 2018, CISD students will graduate on the Foundation Plan with an Endorsement for a total of at least 26 credits. 4 credits of English 1 Fine Art 2 years of Foreign Lang o o o 4 credits of Math 4 credits of Science 4 credits of Social Studies 1 PE .5 Health Elective Credits Foreign Language Two years of consecutive foreign language needed SP II G= “going on” to Spanish III More emphasis on writing and vocabulary Faster pace than Sp II NOT, NOT a PreAP class. Level quality points, same as SP II GPA EXEMPTIONS When a student enrolls in the third or fourth year of one of the courses listed on the next slides and completes the GPA Exempt Application, the course will be excluded in the computation of GPA and class rank Student must have already taken the first two years of the course at a high school and earned at least a B average. GPA Exempt Classes Advanced Journalism (Newspaper and Yearbook) • Art III and IV • District-Identified CTE courses • Athletics (not PE) • Band • Cheerleading • Choir • Color Guard Debate • Dance Team • JROTC • Oral Interpretation • Orchestra • Theatre (Technical Theatre, Theatre Arts, Theatre Production) How does this system benefit students? Conroe ISD utilizes a weighted grade point system that allows students taking advanced courses to receive a GPA greater than 4.0. Students with a cumulative GPA greater than 4.0 will be able to take these courses without suffering the negative impact on their GPA How many courses may a student take as GPA exempt? Students may exempt up to two credits during their high school career. Students are limited to one credit of exemption during their junior year. If a student does not take any courses as GPA exempt during their junior year, they may take up to two credits exempt during their senior year. 11th- 1 class 12th – 1 class OR 12th 2-classes ENDORSEMENT SELECTIONS STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY ARTS and HUMANITIES PUBLIC SERVICE MULTIDISCIPLINARY – Every student who successfully completes the four Foundation subject (cores) areas (English, Math, Science and Social Studies) Additional requirements Foreign Language – 2 credits of any one language: Spanish, French, German, Japanese, or Chinese Heath – .5 credit PE – 1 credit Fine Arts – 1 credit of any of the following: theater, art, orchestra, choir, dance, band (10th), floral design And even more … Some electives will waive the PE requirement: Athletics, Band, Color Guard, Drill Team,Cheer, Off Campus PE, and AFJROTC. What are other electives to think about? Teen Leadership, Journalism, Debate Agriculture – Principles of Agriculture and Small Animal Management Arts, A/V Tech and Communication – Fashion Design Business Management and Administration – Data Touch Systems (keyboarding) Human Services – Money Matters, Travel/Tourism Mgmt., Nutrition/Wellness More electives! Information Technology – Principles of Information Technology (computer technology), Web Technologies ROTC – Junior Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps – it’s not just a class, it’s a program!) NEW ELECTIVES adding fall 2015! Principles of Architecture and Construction (pre-requisite for Architecture Design and Advanced Architecture) o Principles of Business and Marketing and Finance (.5 Credit) o Aerobics (PE credit) o Dance (Fine Art Credit) What level of a course should I register for in 9th grade? What are your choices? Level, Honors, Pre-AP, Advanced Placement What is your teacher’s advisement? This will be discussed on BLITZ Day. What are your past and current grades? How much time will be required for course success? How much time are you willing/able to devote to course success? More factors to consider in selecting courses………. How much time will you be spending on other things? (school activities, church, clubs, etc.) Why are you choosing this particular level of a course? How do you manage time, organize work, meet deadlines NOW? How strong is your desire to take on a new challenge? HOW MUCH HOMEWORK?? Level Classes: 30 – 45 minutes per class each night the class meets Honors /PAP Classes: Approximately 60 minutes each night the class meets Advanced Placement Classes: 90-120 minutes per class each night, or more. Be ready for a faster pace,more reading, writing, and research-based assignments! THESE ARE COLLEGE LEVEL CLASSES! AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY is offered at TWHS 9 KEY THOUGHT Plan carefully and make good choices! What is BLITZ DAY- Feb. 11? Wednesday, February 11 (Red Day) Students will attend all eight of their classes on this day. In the 1st block RED class, you will receive 2 course selection sheets for the 9th grade. In each class, teachers will share important information on high school courses and initial advisement for core classes. BLITZ DAY SCHEDULE @ McC Here is the 1st block: order for the day: 1Red Class 8:50 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. 1 Green Class 9:34 a.m. – 10:14 a.m o 2ND Block 2 Red Class 10:21 a.m –11:00 a.m. 2 Green Class 11:04 –11:45 a.m. 3rd Block 3 Red Class 11:52 a.m. – 1:48 p.m. (all regular red day lunches and normal red day split at 1:02, and no advisory) 3 Green Class 1:55 a.m. – 2:19 p.m. 4th Block 4 Red Class 2:26 p.m. – 3:05 p.m. 4 Green Class 3:08 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. At the end of the day….. One course selection sheet will stay with your 4th block green day teacher, and one sheet goes home. You and your parents will review and select electives and level of placement for core classes! You should carefully consider the recommendations and advisement made by your teachers. Course sheets due Feb. 20th!! Before you turn in your course sheets, you need to have all required signatures: Parents Teachers/coaches/special programs like band, choir, orchestra all need to sign off for approval. Spanish I teachers should also initial for placement in Spanish II. QUIZ TIME!
