Season of Lent
The season of Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and self-examination in preparation for the
celebration of the resurrection of the Lord at Easter. It is a period of 40 days — like the flood
of Genesis, Moses’ sojourn at Mount Sinai, Elijah’s journey to Mount Horeb, Jonah’s call to
Ninevah to repent and Jesus’ time of testing in the wilderness. (The Sundays in Lent are not
counted in this reckoning of the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter, as every Lord’s
Day is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.)
In the early church, Lent was a time of preparation for the celebration of baptism at the Easter
Vigil. In many communities of faith it remains a time to equip and nurture candidates for
baptism and confirmation and to reflect deeply on the theme of baptismal discipleship.

Lenten Bible Study: Please join us on Wednesday’s as we begin our Lenten Bible Study. The
study chosen this year for the season is “The Seven Last Words of Christ”. The study “is
comprised of seven lessons, each on the scriptures toward the Cross during Holy Week. Each
lesson is gathered from the accounts of Good Friday in all four Gospels. They provide us an
opportunity to focus on the cross and on how Jesus understood and expressed his sacrifice of
dying for our sins. We look forward to your participation in this engaging and reflective study!

Expressions from recipients
Austin Massey – George W.C. Moreland Scholarship Recipient
“There are many things to say but to be honest the one thing that is important is to be thankful. The George
Moreland Scholarship helped me go into college already being successful. It taught me how to have
substance and poise. It helped me remember all of my church family back at home rooting for me to
succeed. It showed me that I had support from my family and to never forget where you come from. I carried
that with me until I walked across that stage December 10th, 2011. Thank you First United Presbyterian
Church. From one of your loyal sons.”
