Thanks! You voted and helped us to select the trips for 2015, We hope you will find them entertaining, educational
and fun. We ask that you take time to read the policies and procedures outlined below.
Anne Arundel County Senior Center Trip Rules

ALL TRIPS ARE OPEN TO SENIOR CENTER MEMBERS. CURRENT KEY TAGS
MUST BE SHOWN WHEN REGISTERING FOR A TRIP..

Participants must be self-sufficient to go on trips. The Senior Center
Manager may require a physician’s certification to approve travel.
Anyone who exhibits inappropriate behavior must be approved by the Senior
Center Director before traveling.
Registration will commence upon receipt of the required deposit.
Checks are preferred. Seat assignments will be the responsibility of the
Trip Coordinator.
All monies are non-refundable unless a replacement can be found from the
waiting list. Certain exceptions will be handled on a case by case basis by

Senior Center Staff.
Participants must furnish their own transportation to and from meeting points.
Absolutely no smoking or alcoholic beverages on the buses.
Trip participants will sign a Release of Liability form.
All trip participants will be issued name tags. These name tags will identify them as members of the group, which
sponsored the trip. There should also be two phone numbers on the name tags. One number will be the cell phone
number of the trip coordinator. The second number should be that of the Senior Center or Department of Aging. In
addition, all trip participants should carry an index card with their name, address and emergency contact. It should also
include medication information.
Buses will not wait for anyone. Participants must adhere to scheduled arrival and departure times. Should you become
separated from the group while on a trip, use the information on your name tag to call your trip coordinator or your
Senior Center.
Participants should: Avoid contaminating others on trip day by staying at home when suffering from communicable
illnesses (e.g. flu, colds, etc.). Avoid causing allergic or other adverse reactions by not using strong or excessive
fragrances. Be flexible. Under special circumstances be prepared to accommodate roommates and/or seatmates as
assigned.

Seats will be reserved upon receipt of the required deposit. Initial deposits
must be made in person during the hours specified on the front page. These hours are subject to change.
We will post any changes at the Center and on our web page.
Once a deposit has been made on a particular trip or trips, you may mail additional payments.
Please address envelope to: Trip Committee, Annapolis Senior Activity Center, 119 South Villa Avenue,
Annapolis, MD 21401. Please be sure to specify what trip(s) you are paying on. A receipt will be mailed to
you.
If any special accommodations are needed, it is the responsibility of the traveler to inform the Trip Coordinator
at the time of the initial deposit.
Full payment is due on the specified date. If final payment is not received by the due date, the Trip Committee
has the authority to cancel your reservation. It is not the responsibility of the Trip Committee to notify you of
the final payment due dates. Please mark your calendars.
All trips include all taxes and gratuities.

Because of our location and out of courtesy, we ask that you observe the following “guidelines” when you go
on our trips:
Day Trips...Please park at the far end of the parking lot and walk up to the Senior Center, as you know the
center parking lot can get quite full.
Extended Trips...Parking at the Senior Center will not be allowed. Please make appropriate arrangements to be
dropped off and picked up.

This delightful musical concerns a free-spirited teenaged girl living in Paris at the turn of the 20th
century. She is being groomed as a courtesan in her family’s tradition but, before she is deemed ready
for her debut, she encounters the bon vivant bachelor, Gaston Lachaille.
She captivates Gaston as she is transformed into a charmingly poised young lady. The enchanting
score by Frederick Lowe and Alan Jay Lerner includes such memorable tunes as “Thank Heaven for
Little Girls” and “The Night They Invented Champagne”. Before the show we will enjoy lunch at
Carmine’s restaurant.

AUDRA McDONALD

Friday, March 27
Audra McDonald, a renowned singer at home in both popular and classical genres, was a three-time
Tony Award winner by age 28. The awards were presented for performances in Carousel, Master
Class and Ragtime. She was nominated for another Tony Award in Marie Christine before she won
her fourth for her role in A Raisin in the Sun, placing her in the company of the then four-time winner
actress Angela Lansbury. Ms. McDonald scored her fifth win for her betrayal of Bess in Broadway’s
production of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, thus tying Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris.
Her performance as Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill earned her a sixth Tony Award and made
her the first performer ever to win six Tony Awards for acting and the first person to win in all four
acting categories. As if this weren’t enough, her illustrious career includes appearances in television
and films. This concert is a “must”.

LINCOLN’S COTTAGE & THE FRANCISCAN MONASTERY

Located on the grounds of the Old Soldier’s Home, this charming cottage is the most historic site directly
associated with Lincoln’s presidency aside from the White House. During the Civil War, Lincoln and his
family resided in the cottage, located just over three miles north of the White House, from June through
November during the years 1862-1864. Lincoln commuted to Washington daily by horseback or carriage,
and enjoyed spending time with his family at this breeze-swept pastoral refuge where he met with Cabinet
members, political allies and adversaries alike. Most importantly, Lincoln developed the Emancipation
Proclamation here. He last rode out to the site three days before his assassination.
This year the nation is marking the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s assassination.
Next we’ll visit the Franciscan Monastery with its arched walkways, 15 miniature outdoor chapels and
beautiful gardens. The monastery was built in 1899 and many of the shrines are replicas of ones in Israel.
We will tour the catacombs and pass through two gates that lead up to a replica of a room where the Romans
would have held Christians before they were fed to the lions in the first century.
Note: The tour includes a 45 minute walking tour and there are no benches to sit down. Please wear
comfortable walking shoes. There are 35 steps to the upper level where the tour begins.

“HISTORIC EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY”

Today’s journey to “The City of Brotherly Love” begins with a delicious lunch at Jack’s
Firehouse Restaurant. Set in a 19th century firehouse in the Fairmount neighborhood of
Philadelphia, Jack’s offers a unique setting with an elegant old-fashioned feel. Please
provide a meal selection when making your reservation. Your choices are:
Southern Style Pulled Pork Sandwich, Roasted Chicken, Pecan Coated Catfish or
Vegetarian Pasta.
Following lunch we depart for the Eastern State Penitentiary for a guided walking tour.
The tour will highlight Eastern State’s 142 year history, revolutionary architecture and
notorious inmates. Included in the tour is the central rotunda, restored cells, the solitary
confinement yards, the baseball diamond, death row and Al Capone’s cell. After the
tour, you can explore the site on your own, including the history and art exhibits before
departing for home. Note: The building has no climate controls so dress accordingly. Sturdy
closed-toe walking shoes are recommended. The grounds are occasionally uneven.

THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART

Today we visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art, one of the largest art museums in the United States.
We will enjoy an insightful and inspiring one-hour guided tour of some of the museum’s more
than 227,000 objects that include “world-class holdings of European and American paintings,
prints, drawings and decorative arts”. In addition, you will have the opportunity to visit the Ruth and
Raymond Perlman Building, an Art Deco architectural marvel constructed in 1927, located across
the street from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The building houses some of the more popular
collections as well as the Museum’s library. Before our visit, enjoy a delicious lunch at Jack’s

step-on guide at the Sailwinds Visitor Center before our visit to Hooper’s Island in Fishing Creek,
MD. Along the way our guide will entertain and educate us with some memorable tales of how a 300
year old island way of life is vanishing from the Bay. We arrive at the Marina and board the Coast
Guard certified “Sawyer”, a 50-foot authentic Chesapeake-built vessel for a one hour narrated cruise
of the Honga river. The captain will entertain you with facts and stories of the area’s history as we
scan the riverbanks for views of eagles, pelican and cormorants. Bring your binoculars! Enjoy a

Today we travel to the quaint town of Orrtana, Pennsylvania nestled among the rolling hills and
farmlands of Adams County. Our delicious tea luncheon will be served on lace tablecloths, with tea

and quiet charm of tea time served in a unique setting, a historic Pennsylvania barn decorated with
hundreds of antiques. Before our tea luncheon we will visit two specialty shops, one of which is the
Country Store, a wonderful museum of items from the past. On our way home we will stop at

THE SPY CITY TOUR

Today we visit Washington, the Spy Capitol of the World, for a guided motor coach tour. Lurking behind Washington’s day-to-day world of government workers, political antics, gorgeous museums and
soaring monuments is an underworld of espionage unknown to the casual observer. From World Wars
to the Cold War to the present, our tour will feature some of the most intriguing sites in downtown
D.C. As a “Recruit” in Spy School 101, you will be briefed by a “Training Officer” (aka a guide from
the Spy Museum) on key sites linked to intelligence triumphs, disasters and mysteries and hear tales
of spies who’ve left their mark on the city. High- level former intelligence officers provide videos
and tradecraft secrets as the tour winds its way through the city. The two hour tour features over 25
of Washington’s most notable espionage sites, including a French Bistro where a seductive agent
used her wiles to elicit secret information from her infatuated U. S. State Department target. After
our tour enjoy a delicious family-style lunch at Carmine’s, a legendary New York City restaurant
now located in the nation’s Capital.

Perhaps you may just decide to stop in to say hi or pick up a card game
or a chess or checker game.
Whatever you decide to do...it’s sure to bring your pleasure whenever
you decide to KEEP MOVING ON with the Annapolis Senior Activity

Welcome aboard! Travel in comfort on a deluxe motor coach through the scenic countryside of the Blue Ridge
Mountains to Asheville, NC where we check into our hotel for the next three nights. Next day we depart for the
legendary Biltmore Estate, the largest privately owned home in America. To provide you with the best possible tour
experience we have included the official audio guide to help you enjoy the highlights of the mansion. We will also
visit the estate’s winery where you’ll be treated to a wine tasting. Beautiful forsythia, spirea, red buds, dogwoods and
99,000 tulips await you on the estate grounds which cover almost 75 acres, surrounding the 250 room Biltmore House.
As a special treat, the exhibit of costumes from the British TV drama series Downton Abbey will be showcased inside
the house. More than 40 historically accurate costumes as well as photographs and vignettes will be on view. A tour of
Asheville is on the agenda for the next day, where we will be amazed at the Art Deco architecture and the engineering
wonder of the tile domed ceiling of the St. Lawrence Basilica. We’ll visit the Folk Art Center which showcases the
finest in traditional and contemporary crafts of the Southern Appalachians.

Day 1-2: Join us as we fly to Zurich. We will be escorted to Lucerne where we have accommodations
for the next three nights.
Day 3: On our visit to this country, considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world, we will
board the world’s steepest cog railway, a cable car and a gondola as we visit Mt. Pilatus.
Day 4: We drive to Lugano to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Swiss Alps.
Day 5: We travel to Berne, the capital of Switzerland and continue to Lausanne where we have accommodations for the next three nights.
Day 6: Geneva is our next stop where we will visit Old Town and the Jet d’Eau the world’s tallest
water fountain.
Day 7: We board the “Chocolate Train” to enjoy the scenery. In the evening, we will stop at the
lakeside town of Montreux for a delicious farewell dinner. Please stop at the trip desk to pick up a

days. Following dinner, we depart for Celebration in Lights, Virginia’s original drive-through
holiday light event in Newport News. Over 800,000 Christmas Lights transform the city. Day two,
we will visit the Williamsburg Pottery Factory which has a revolutionary new look transitioning
it from a bare-bones warehouse format into a sophisticated environment evoking the romance
and charm of a European market. This tour is optional and guests who prefer to spend the morning
in Williamsburg may do so. We gather for a delicious tavern lunch. Tonight, we attend The
Grand Illumination, an event that signals the start of the holiday season and features the lighting
of candles, the illumination of the buildings, caroling, dancing, and music, and concludes with a
festive fireworks display. Next day we depart for the Yankee Candle Village. We also visit Yankee
Holiday Park where Christmas is celebrated year ’round, snow is always in the forecast and there
are more than 50 magically decorated Christmas trees.
