* Biography Max Werner (1922-2011) Born in
Eschwege, Germany, Max Werner loved cars from a
very early age. As a young boy his great friend was the
family chauffeur, Mr Pertak, who explained the workings
of the family car and engine. After graduating from the
University of Leeds he became a naturalised British
citizen, returning to Germany after World War Two to
become a director of the family knitwear business LS
Brinkmann Gmbh in Eschwege. Combining his passion
for motor racing and his hobby of photography he began
documenting race meetings, beginning with the 1951
British Grand Prix at Silverstone, catching a very youthful
Stirling Moss in the paddock at the wheel of his Cooper
500. Regularly attending meetings at Reims, Monaco,
Spa and Le Mans as well as Silverstone and Goodwood,
he became friendly with many of the drivers, which
enabled him to get close to the cars and the action in the
pits. He was a regular contributor to the International
Motor Racing magazine and was extremely proud of a
photo of Mike Hawthorn at the wheel of the Ferrari, which
he later had signed. Attending Le Mans in 1955 he was
able to photograph Pierre Levegh along with the
Mercedes team before the start of the race, later
witnessing first hand the tragic accident only a few
hundred yards away from them in the stands. He began
his racing career in 1958 at an International Sport car
meeting at the Nurburgring in a Mercedes 300sl.
Competing in numerous national events across the
continent in the 300sl and subsequently a 4.2litre Jaguar
E -type, he achieved 1st Place at the Rallye Trifels in
1960. In 1962 he finished 15th overall and 2nd in the
over 2 litre class at the Nurburgring 1000kms to the Mike
Parkes/Willy Mairesse 4 litre Ferrari 250GTO. At each
event he carefully recorded and filed the event
programme and results producing a unique individual
archive of not only his result, but many of the famous
drivers of the period who competed. His success enabled
him to become a Life Member of the BRDC and he
continued to attend many of their functions and the
British Grand Prix. As well as his racing and
photography Max was an accomplished marksman,
winning numerous trophies.

featuring an article and photograph of the model and original photographs and club member cards for Mr. P Tarbox.
£600-£800.
* Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood are delighted to have been instructed to undertake the sale of the collection of the Late Mr Phillip
Tarbox. He was a passionate collector and member of The Matchbox International Collectors Association, his collection includes a
rare variation of a Lesney 'Model Of Yesteryear' Y8, 1926 Cowley Bullnose Morris with a tow hitch. The story behind how Mr Tarbox
acquired this rare variation of a well-known model is one that many collectors around the world dream of but only few ever have the
opportunity. As a regular collector and buyer at auction, a simple catalogue description of 'ten boxed Models of Yesteryear and two
unboxed models' in a sale in Exeter in April 1986 aroused his interest and he purchased the lot for a modest price. On closer
examination the Bullnose model revealed that it had a tow hook on the rear of the chassis and so further investigation began. In the
days long before email and social media, Mr Tarbox wrote to Matchbox and sent photographs of the model to confirm that it was
correct. Engineers from Matchbox thoroughly examined the piece and confirmed that it was correct and that it was not a
manufacturing fault of excess casting or flash. This was also confirmed by the MICA members and magazine editor at the Farnham
swapmeet in September 1986, and published in the MICA magazine. (Vol2 No4 1986). It is not known how many of these variations
exist and they rarely come up at auction. Mr Tarbox's model in its original box and a copy of the MICA magazine with his photographs
are included in the sale.
