WELCOME
CONTENTS
Welcome once again to the Professional BusinessWomen of California’s
Annual Conference. This is our 26th year of delivering first-rate
programming designed to engage, inform, inspire and motivate
change. Thank you all for taking the time to be with us today.
This year, our conference theme is One Life,
One Legacy: Making the Most of You. We hope
each of you will come away from today with
a broader perspective, a crisper vision and
renewed resolve. When we strive to achieve our
own personal best, we broaden the road and
make the way smoother and easier for those
marching beside us as well as those coming up
behind.
As our organization enters its second quartercentury — we are indeed 26 years old — we look
back with pride at PBWC’s accomplishments:
the lives we have touched (more than 100,000
conference attendees and counting), the
consistent and high-quality programming we
have delivered, the incredible speakers we
have had the privilege of hearing from, and the
phenomenal women (and men too) who have
supported PBWC as members, volunteers and
leaders. Our organization is characterized by
clarity of purpose, strength of leadership, and
breadth of community support. Our legacy is one
of enduring value.
Today, we have the privilege of hearing from an
array of extraordinary keynote speakers whose
inspiring legacies, while still emerging and
evolving, are already apparent:
• Leymah Gbowee, Nobel laureate, Liberian
peace activist and women’s rights advocate
• Leeza Gibbons, Emmy Award-winning
journalist, radio host, New York Times
bestselling author and winner of NBC’s The
Celebrity Apprentice
• Sallie Krawcheck, one of the world’s
top innovators and most powerful
businesswomen
• Carolyn Buck Luce, strategist, teacher and
senior executive passionate about women’s
leadership and healthcare
And then there is our own Jackie Speier.
Congresswoman Speier founded PBWC, and
this is just one of many accomplishments in a
tremendous track record that demonstrates
the tenacity of her character, the strength of
her vision, and the depth of her commitment
to advancing women. Among the issues she
is leading on Capitol Hill are the safety of our
daughters on college campuses and protection
from sexual assault for the servicewomen and
men in the U.S. military who put their lives on
the line to protect our country. Congresswoman
Speier’s life is inspirational to all of us. Her legacy
is already apparent. And, as you will see when
she speaks to us today, she continues to make
the most of every opportunity to advance the
position of women and strengthen this nation for
generations still to come.
Do not miss out on our breakout sessions. We
have brought together world-class speakers on
topics that range from innovation to networking,
negotiation to public speaking. These breakout
sessions are a great opportunity to augment
your personal toolkit as you set about the task of
building your legacy and making the most of you.
To all of our generous sponsors who have been
with us over these 26 years and who will be with
us as we march forward to celebrate our halfcentury mark, we express our deep appreciation
and our commitment to continuing to build this
legacy on your behalf.
And to all of today’s conference attendees,
please remember: you have one life and one
legacy, which is more than enough. Take the time
today to add new skills, meet new friends and
feel the inspiration all around you. We want you
to make the most of you!

SEMINAR SESSIONS
The Credibility Code: How to Project Confidence
and Competence When It Matters Most
Transforming your Life and Work
through the Power of Words
Credibility. Leadership presence. Personal power. We know these qualities when we see them, but what are the cues that
lead us to these impressions? In her signature presentation, Cara Hale Alter deconstructs what it takes to carry yourself
like a leader. Using the criteria laid out in her book, The Credibility Code, she emphasizes the power of the “sub-textual”
conversation and identifies the specific “codes of conduct”—for posture, gestures, vocal skills, eye contact, and more—
that influence the perception of credibility. Individually, these behaviors are easy to implement; together they form a skill
set that can transform your career. Discover how to:
• Cultivate personal presence
• Recognize/prevent the “tells” of nervousness and intimidation
• Strike a balance between authority and approachability
• Demonstrate composure under pressure
• Avoid unintentional behaviors that may lower your status
In this engaging session by Kevin Hall — acclaimed business consultant, coach and international bestselling author of
Aspire — you will learn the inherent power of key words that function as passwords for unlocking purpose and potential. You will discover and understand that words contain intrinsic power, a force capable of lighting one’s paths
and hoped-for horizons. Used correctly, words are the first building blocks for success and inner peace; they provide
vision and focus and show the way to growth and contribution. Used incorrectly, they are capable of undermining
even the best of intentions. There is a language of success and a language of distress. There is a language of progress
and a language of regress. Words sell, and words repel. Words lead, and words impede. Words heal, and words kill.
You will discover how to develop a new leadership vocabulary that looks up, not down, and inspires, motivates, uplifts,
excites, and propels your audiences. Above all, you will learn how to transform your life and work by using the right
words at the right time to build relationships, to convey points of view, to inspire and encourage, and to live a life of
meaning and significance.

The Mask We Live In: Raising the Next Generation of Leaders
Room 310 : 1:00pm-2:00pm
ABC7 Expo Stage : 1:00pm-2:00pm
Mark Romero
Energy Healer and Transformational Leader
Mark Romero is an internationally known energy healer and transformational
leader. For nearly 20 years, Mark had a successful career in sales and executive management. Even with this success, the calling for him to be of greater
service to humanity is what ultimately encouraged him to change his direction. A former top consultant to NASA discovered that Mark is a conduit for
energy that enhances people’s connection to the creative universal source.
With this connection, people are able to dramatically reduce stress, increase
stamina, improve health, and open up to higher levels of awareness. Today,
Mark has helped thousands of people worldwide heal their lives and shift
their perceptions. Patients with Alzheimer’s have regained short-term memory, Autistic children have been able to have focused conversations, stressed
corporate executives are producing better results, patients are recovering
faster from surgery and illness, and people are letting go of the limiting
beliefs and internal blocks preventing them from living more fully expressed
lives. Mark’s work with energy and music has placed him on the stage with
internationally respected leaders such as Mark Victor Hansen, Harv Eker, Dr.
Bruce Lipton, and Marianne Williamson, and he is recognized as a leader in
the field of optimizing personal energy.
The Power of Purpose
ABC7 Expo Stage : 10:45am-11:45am / Room 300 : 1:00pm-2:00pm
“Where your talents and the needs of the world meet, there lies your purpose.” – Aristotle
When you have clarity of purpose in your life and in your work, it changes everything. In this interactive session, Haley
will share numerous examples from purpose-driven organizations she’s worked with — including Southwest Airlines,
Whole Foods Market, Chipotle, Interstate Batteries, Charles Schwab and the American Red Cross — to show the power
of purpose to create high-performing organizations that lift both people and profits to extraordinary levels. She will
then lead the group through a series of exercises designed to help you articulate and bring to life the purpose of your
own work or that of your organization. It’s designed to inspire, engage and set each participant upon her own path to
creating a purpose-driven work life.
Haley Rushing
Chief Purposologist and Co-founder, The Purpose Institute
Haley Rushing is the chief purposologist and co-founder of The Purpose Institute in Austin, Texas. As chief purposologist, Haley leads a team of people who
act as organizational therapists, anthropologists and investigators dogged in
their pursuit of uncovering the purpose at the heart of an organization. Over
the past few years, the requests for Haley to help organizations discover their
purpose have grown, and the clients who have embraced doing business on
purpose have prospered. As a result, she and Roy Spence founded The Purpose Institute, an organization dedicated to helping clients discover and articulate their purposes and values in the world. She has personally led the charge
to discover and bring to life the values and purposes for some of the most
purpose-driven organizations in the world: The American Red Cross, Wal-Mart,
Southwest Airlines, Whole Foods Market, Univision, American Council on Education, Texas A&M, Norwegian Cruise Line and the great state of Louisiana.

Jennifer’s latest film, The Mask You Live In, follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while
negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in
their lives, boys confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class,
and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become “real” men. Experts in
neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media agree there is a “boy crisis,” and Jennifer will share with
us the empirical evidence and tactics to combat it. The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise
a healthier generation of boys and young men. Jennifer will also speak about raising the next generation of female leaders,
drawing on her award-winning documentary Miss Representation, which exposes injustices created by gender stereotypes
and to shift people’s consciousness towards change.
Jennifer Siebel Newsom
President and CEO, The Representation Project
Jennifer Siebel Newsom is revolutionizing the way women are portrayed in the
media. A successful actress herself, Newsom has landed many roles in TV and film,
including Mad Men, LIFE, In the Valley of Elah, Rent, and Something’s Gotta Give.
While working in Hollywood, however, she quickly became dismayed at how women
were presented in front of the camera, and realized she needed to do something.
So Newsom decided to take matters into her own hands and step behind the camera. The result was the award-winning documentary, Miss Representation, which
exposed the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence in
America, and challenged the media’s disparaging portrayals of women. She later
produced the Oscar-nominated documentary, The Invisible War, which unveils the
epidemic of rape in the U.S. military. Newsom’s latest documentaries are The Mask
You Live In, which explores how our culture’s narrow definition of masculinity is harming boys, men, and society as a whole, and The Great American Lie.
The Happiness Choice: 5 Decisions that Take You
from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be
Room 309 : 10:45am-11:45am / 1:00pm-2:00pm
Happiness is a choice. In 2013, Gallup research showed that in the USA, $550 billion worth of productivity was lost due
to unhappiness and poor wellbeing at work. People want contentment, love, and happiness derived from meaningful
work. They want healthy personal relationships, a healthy mind and body, a spiritual core, and a reason for living. But
with only 24 hours in a day and the competing demands of modern life, how can you achieve all of this? Marilyn Tam
shares what she learned from being an unwanted, neglected, and abused child in Hong Kong to becoming an international business success and humanitarian who is happy, healthy, and at peace with herself. In this presentation, you
will learn the principles, tools, and philosophies Tam and others have used to achieve a productive, healthy, and joyful
life. You’ll learn what will help power your organization, employees, and yourself to greater creativity, productivity, and
happiness.
Marilyn Tam
Author, The Happiness Choice
Marilyn Tam, Ph.D., is a speaker, author, consultant, board-certified executive/corporate coach, CEO of Marilyn Tam & Co., and founder and executive director of Us
Foundation. She was formerly the CEO of Aveda Corp., president of Reebok Apparel and Retail Group, vice president of Nike Inc., and also a successful entrepreneur
who has built four companies. Marilyn is a contributing writer to Huffington Post
on how to live a happy, healthy, successful, and dynamically balanced life. Marilyn
was recognized as one of the Top 30 Female Entrepreneurs in the USA by Fempreneur magazine. Jack Canfield detailed her work in his book on the strategies for
success, The Success Principles. Brand Channel lists her as one of the four most
prominent names in ethical business globally. Marilyn’s new book, The Happiness
Choice, was the top third most-read book by businesses according to the leading business book supplier. The book won the Silver Medal of the Global eBook
Awards and shows how and why happiness is crucial for business productivity and
success, and for your physical, emotional, spiritual and financial health.

Global Change Agents: The Power of Investing in
Women and Children
Room 305 : 1:00pm-2:00pm
Mary will give an inspirational story of how life unfolded for her as a child adopted into a family with parents caring
for 45 foster children, the search and reunion with her birth families, and the challenges and graces in co-founding
and growing a public oil and gas exploration and service business, pioneering a new technology, and leading community development in a small town. She will talk about her transition into founding a global charitable foundation
16 years ago and the rewards and challenges that faced her as a woman in creating and funding over 80 programs
in 26 countries with a focus on health, education, and income generation for women and children. Hear why and
how women are gaining more control of wealth and giving differently than men, and join Mary’s journey of being a
philanthropist in a way that empowers others.
Ubuntu Africa’s Most Important Teaching
Room 302 : 10:45am-11:45am
Boyd Varty will be using the medium of African storytelling to introduce attendees to the value of Ubuntu. Ubuntu
means “I am because of you.” It is the discovery of how people and in fact the whole natural world can help us to
deepen our own humanity. Boyd’s stories of his time with Nelson Mandela, his experiences in the African bush with his
friend and tracker Solly Mhlongo, as well as other encounters with wildlife will help us to showcase how Ubuntu is an
act of embodiment that can enrich each of our lives and change our working environments.
Boyd Varty
Coach and Environmental and Literacy Activist
Boyd Varty was born to a family of conservationists in the African bush, and
grew up surrounded by the people and animals who were part of the family’s
dream to “restore Eden.” As a child, he shared his home with lions, leopards,
snakes, and elephants. As a university student, he studied psychology and ecology, supplementing his education by learning martial arts in Thailand, hiking
through the jungles of the Amazon, and apprenticing himself to a renowned
tracker from the Shangaan tribe to deepen his intimate knowledge of the natural world. Varty is a coach who introduces First World seekers to the art of inner
tracking.
Mary Tidlund
Founder and President, The Mary A. Tidlund Charitable Foundation
Mary A. Tidlund was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and adopted at the
age of seven by a loving Calgary family. Along with three other adopted
children, Mary shared her childhood with at least 45 foster children whom her
parents nurtured and loved. Later in her life, she reunited with her birth families. After completing a science degree in geography, Mary began a 15-year
career in the oil industry, later becoming president and CEO of a publicly
traded oil exploration and service company. She located the head office for
the company in rural Arcola, Saskatchewan, where she was committed to
the community through her entrepreneurial work. Mary’s commitment was
recognized nationally in 1993 when she was a finalist in the Canadian Women
Entrepreneur Awards. In addition, Mary received an In Award for having the
most impact on a local community. The Mary A. Tidlund Charitable Foundation is a public foundation that has grown to work in 26 countries with over
80 programs. Key foundation initiatives include delivering medical clinics
and workshops, constructing schools, medical facilities and playgrounds,
educational sponsorship, water, and micro finance projects. Focusing on
women and children, Mary’s long-term goal is to empower individuals to
provide for themselves and create self-sustaining programs that have broad
community impact.
The Creator’s Code: The Six Essential Skills
of Extraordinary Entrepreneurs
Room 306 : 10:45am-11:45am
Each of us has the capacity to spot opportunities, invent products, and build businesses—even $100 million businesses.
How do some people turn ideas into enterprises that endure? Why do some people succeed when so many others
fail? The Creator’s Code reveals six skills that make creators of all kinds of endeavors break through. These skills aren’t
rare gifts or slim-chance talents. Entrepreneurship, Wilkinson demonstrates, is accessible to everyone. This session
provides insights and core guidance for success in the new world of work.
Amy Wilkinson
Strategic Adviser and Lecturer, Stanford Graduate School of Business
Amy Wilkinson has held leadership roles with McKinsey & Company and J.P.
Morgan, and founded a small, foreign-based export company. She has served as
a White House fellow and special assistant to the United States Trade Representative and as a senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. In her landmark book,
The Creator’s Code, Wilkinson unlocks the six essential skills that turn intriguing
concepts into successful companies. She conducted rigorous interviews with
200 of today’s leading entrepreneurs, including the founders of LinkedIn, Chipotle, eBay, Under Armour, Tesla Motors, SpaceX, Spanx, Airbnb, PayPal, JetBlue,
Gilt Groupe, Theranos, and Dropbox. Evaluating companies as diverse as Yelp,
Chobani, and Zipcar, Wilkinson found that their creators all share — and have
honed — fundamental skills that can be learned, practiced, and passed on.
