As I write this, it is just past Valentine’s Day and even though it is ‐25C the calendar says that winter is winding down. It’s a perfect time to look back and look forward. Since last summer we have been busy! In September Bronx Park proudly opened the door to our fully functional wood shop which is being run by our Wood Shop Director Michaelene Ness. It is packed every session already, and is making a great impact on our community. We also started up a committee of great people to head up our Bronx Park CC Farmers Market, which will run every Saturday from June to September starting this summer! The rinks have been extremely busy throughout the winter and we are very happy with the continuing rave reviews we have been receiving about how great the ice has been. At our Satelite facility, Clara Hughes Recreation Park at 281 Henderson Hwy, renovations have been completed inside and out and as this newsletter goes to print we will have celebrated our first Elmwood Winter Carnival at that site! Soccer registration starts soon and we welcome our new Convenor, Erica Kappy. She and our TImbits Convenor Jason Macdonald will be working to get the “ball rolling” and we know that many other parents will be stepping forward to help with coaching and all the other responsibilities this will bring. Bronx Park will be holding our AGM in May and we are looking for more people who want to join in on continuing to make Bronx even better. We know you have great ideas and energy. We need you and want you to join us. If it feels like I am talking to you directly then I am. Contact the Facility Manager, Lydia Henderson, at facilitymanager@bronxpark.ca and let her know that you want to be a part of the team that is improving our community centre and our community. In the meantime check out our website and Facebook page to see what is happening at your community centre. It was 5 years after our new building was open before the wood shop could be completed with the new dust collection and electrical systems. We now have one of the finest wood shops in the city open to the public. And a great team of instructors and volunteers offer a variety of programs for every skill level. We believe that every person with an interest in woodworking should have the opportunity to learn the basic skills. Our Introduction to Woodworking course was designed for just that purpose. We teach the safe and proper use of hand and power tools including larger woodworking machinery. Each participant gets hands‐on experience by building two projects over the 8 weeks of the course. Once an individual has the basics, the next step is the Woodworking II course. This course allows each person to select their own project and work at their own speed with the help of an instructor each step of the way. And of course, there is time set aside for experienced woodworkers to use the shop. Our Drop‐In times are twice a week, for 4 hours, where you may bring your own materials and supplies and use our well‐equipped shop to work on your own project. This is where our knowledgeable team of Volunteers help out! They are our Drop‐In Supervisors who ensure equipment is used safely and help users in any way they can. Our volunteers have also gone beyond their normal duties by helping to keep our tools sharp, and to lubricate our machinery to keep everything running smoothly. Don’t know what we would do without them. Please contact us if you are interested in joining our team of volunteers. We have found there is a lot of interest in our specialty courses. Our ROUTER class teaches many skills for using the hand‐held router and the table mounted router. While the Baseboards and Casings class gives lots of tips and proven techniques for installing trim in your home. Also watch for future Cabinet Making and Intarsia courses. Join us for our one day USED TOOL SALE, Saturday April 18, 10 am – 2 pm. We will sell your used tools (we keep 15%), or just come and see what bargains you can find! For full listings of all the dates and times of our upcoming classes see the section on Wood Shop programs in this newsletter, or visit the Bronx Park CC website for updated information. Michaelene Ness, Wood Shop Coordinator & Instructor Want to earn FREE Drop‐in passes? We are looking for individuals with woodworking experience to be volunteer supervisors of our drop‐in sessions. If you are interested please contact Bronx Park at facilitymanager@bronxpark.ca Bronx Park SPORTS BRONX HOCKEY Congratulation to all of our Bronx Park CC hockey teams for outstanding play in the 2014‐2015 season!! On Valentine’s Day the Bronx 10A2 team (pictured below) competed in a Squirt B tournament in East Grand Forks. They were the only team in the entire tournament to win all the games in their round robin – and they advanced straight to the gold medal game on Sun. Feb. 15. This team of hard working boys were awarded the SILVER medals after a hard fought battle! These boys and the whole Bronx hockey community should be proud of their “never say die” attitude and hard fought effort to win the silver medals! Way to go Bronx Bruins 10A2!! GOLD MEDAL win for the Bronx 9A2 team in the Christmas Tournament! In an exciting and tough match up against the Red River Dragons the Bronx team played incredibly. In the lead up to the final Mason Duberley scored an incredible 7 goals. The final was a tough game with a lot of players who worked had to keep their top few players in check. The Bronx goalie Daemon Macdonald was sensational and the game ended in a TIE and went to sudden death overtime 4 on 4! On a penalty shot Carter Mykachuk managed to ring the puck off the left post up to the cross bar and scored the winning goal!! Hard fought game by all the Bronx players to bring home the trophy!
