thoughts with media.
Randolph Horn (Political Science)
to The Anniston Star Feb. 6 on the
little political polarization that
respondents showed in a recent
Public Affairs Research Council of
Alabama public opinion survey on
health care, education and
corrections.
“The political system and public are
not always super-aligned. There are
a lot of people more in the middle.”
The only question that received
responses strongly tied to a political
party was one that concerned
Medicaid, he said.
Carol Ratcliffe (Nursing) to CBS
42 Feb. 1 on differences in medical
costs at various types of hospitals.
“You should never assume that the
cheaper option for a procedure
necessarily means lower quality
health care or that the most
expensive procedure will mean the
best health care.”
Frances Carter (retired Education,
founder of American Rosie the
Riveter Association) to al.com/The
Birmingham News Feb. 4 on the
important work that women did
during World War II.
“We established a legacy of opening
the door, breaking the glass ceiling.
Women can work now in almost
any sort of occupation.” n

Provost Search Committee Plans
to Have Candidate by April

and Bad’ in Rant or

D
S
ennis Samson, chair of
Samford University’s Provost
Search Committee, said President
Andrew Westmoreland’s goal of
having a candidate for campus-wide
interviews in April can be met.
The committee met for the
seventh time Monday, Feb. 23, and
the prevailing attitude was one of
determination to meet both the goal
and assignment, according to
Samson. The committee will meet
again March 3. Other members include Garry
Atkins, student affairs; Buck Brock,
business and financial affairs; Kristi
Chandler, human development and
family science; graduate student
Rachel Cobble; Kathryn Fouse, arts;
undergraduate student Hunter
Gibbs; Denise Gregory, diversity
and intercultural initiatives; Woody
Hartzog, law; Kim Herndon,
libraries; Emily Hynds, mathematics; Margaret Johnson, communication sciences and disorders; Dave
Luthin, pharmacy; undergraduate
student Laura Ann Prickett;
Sharron Schlosser, nursing; Frank
Thielman, divinity; graduate
student Cam Thomas; Tom Woolley,
business; and Debi Whitcomb,
technology services.
“I am grateful to the 19
members of the faculty,
administration, staff and student
body who have agreed to assist us
with the important task,” said
Westmoreland.
Likewise, Sansom lauded the
makeup of the committee, noting
that every aspect of the university’s
work was represented. “There is no
ideological divide or conflict in this
committee, although there is
diversity of opinion,” he said.
“However, members are able to
reason with each other and reach a
conclusion.”
According to Sansom, most of
the meetings to date have been
introductory. “We wanted to build
trust, disclose our love for Samford
and identify the issues the new
provost will face,” Samson said.
Among those issues are a
student body that is both undergraduate and graduate, the mission
of Samford as a Christian institution
and Samford’s commitment to
academic excellence.
Working with and advising the
committee is Diversfied Search,
with national headquarters in
Atlanta. However, the person
assigned to the committee is Gene
Head, who is a member of the
Howard College of Arts and
Sciences Advisory Committee and
an alumnus of Samford who has
worked with other search
committees at Samford.
All candidates will be con
sidered by Diversified Search, who
will then provide the provost search
committee a packet of approxi
mately two dozen candidate
applications for consideration,
Sansom said.
Samson noted that while a
suggested job description was
provided by the national search
firm, the committee had made
“lots of changes” to it and had
come up with a three-page
description based on the
committee’s recommendations.
Information about the search
can be found at samford.edu/

ince taking over food service at
Samford in August 2014, Sodexo
has attempted to solicit “good, bad
and ugly” comments about its
products and services from students
and employees.
“We want to know what YOU
think,” reads a flyer, email message
and the company’s website. “Tell us
about it.”
A customer can talk to a
manager or supervisor, and Sodexo
manager Brent Bolton said he
prefers a face-to-face response.
Comments also can be made at
samford.sodexomyway.com, via
email to Bolton at jbolton2@
samford.edu or via Twitter
@SamfordDining. No matter which
medium a customer uses, Bolton
said, “tell us about it.”
According to Bolton, Sodexo has
received much feedback about the
dining program. “We use this to
help improve and maintain the
Samford dining program,” he said.
“We need to hear how we are doing,
whether the feedback is good or
bad.”
All facilities are included in the
response effort, according to Bolton,
including the main dining hall, also
known as the caf, the food court,
Rotunda Club, concessions and
catering services. n
