Kindergarten Registration Week
Registration for kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year will be held the week of March 16 through
March 20 at the elementary school in your attendance area. Enrollment in kindergarten is mandatory
for children who will be five years of age on or before September 1, 2015.
Parents will need to present the following at the time of registration:
1. their child’s birth certificate or other legal document to verify their child’s legal name and birth
date
2. verification of residence such as a current utility bill (ex: gas, electric, water) or a current lease
agreement that includes the service address with house number and street name.
3. specific address from which the child will be transported to school and the specific address to
which the child will be transported after school.
Immunization records must be completed and returned to the school prior to the start of the school

Harlem Wizards – Manchester Valley High School
Bring the whole family for an evening of entertainment and watch as local teachers, administrators,
staff, and community members from Manchester and Hampstead take on the Harlem Wizards in a game
of basketball tricks, hoops and alley oops! The game will take place on Monday, March 16, at 6:30 p.m.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Ticket prices are Student/Senior Citizen: $8 in advance ($10 at the door); General Admission: $10 in
advance ($12 at the door); Children 3 years and younger are free. Special Courtside Plus tickets can be
purchased in advance for $28. (Contact Maria Cappadora at Manchester Valley.) To purchase tickets, log

"Advanced Sales/Will Call" lines in the main lobby of Manchester Valley High School on the night of the

Carroll County String Project Elementary String Clinics
The Carroll County String Project is hosting a series of elementary level string clinics throughout the
month of February and March. These clinics are open to all Carroll County 4 th and 5th grade violin, viola,
cello, and double bass players. Students will receive instruction on basic string technique that will serve
as an extension upon what they learn in their school instrumental music classes. The remaining sessions
will be held on Tuesdays, March 17 and March 24 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Elementary
School in the cafeteria. Founded in 2007, The Carroll County String Project is a non-profit organization
that focuses on providing affordable music instruction in private lesson and group settings.

Youth Art Month Exhibits
Carroll County Public Schools will be holding two art exhibits in celebration of Youth Art Month in
March.
Selected artwork by high school students will be featured in the High School Visual Arts Exhibit through
March 19 in the Main Hall of the Carroll Community College Langdon Gallery. The public is welcome
during normal business hours.
The Elementary and Middle Level Visual Arts Exhibit, featuring selected artwork by elementary and
middle school students, will be held at the Carroll County Arts Council through March 18. The
elementary exhibit will be in the Tevis Gallery (first floor), and the middle school exhibit will be in the
Community Gallery (second floor). The public is welcome during normal business hours.

Town Meeting
Board President James Doolan and Superintendent Stephen Guthrie will be hosting a town meeting on
Wednesday, March 18, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Liberty High School, located at 5855 Bartholow Road in
Eldersburg.
The purpose of the town meeting is to create an open dialogue with parents and the community.
Members of the community are invited to attend and address their concerns or ask questions regarding
education topics and issues. The meeting is intended to be an open forum; however, depending on the
number of participants the time for each speaker may be limited.

One School, One Book – Ebb Valley Elementary School
Ebb Valley Elementary School is participating in the One School, One Book reading program from
through March 20. Every family in the school received the book Frindle by Andrew Clements to read at
home. The kickoff ceremony was held on Friday, February 27. Several fun events based on the reading
have been planned. Families are encouraged to send in photos of their family reading and enjoying the
book together at home to the media center.

Cinderella’s Closet – Francis Scott Key High School
The Francis Scott Key High School National Honor Society will be holding its annual Cinderella’s Closet on
Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21. Formal and semiformal dresses, as well as men’s
accessories, will be available for purchase. There will be raffles held for those who purchase a dress or
accessory, and they will have the chance to win amazing prizes. Concessions will be available for
purchase.

Mary Poppins – Century High School
Century High School’s “Opening Knights” Drama program will present Mary Poppins in April. This is the
first time the production will be brought to the stage in Carroll County. Evening performances will be
held on April 9, 10, 11, 17, and 18 at 7 p.m. Matinees will be held on April 11 and 18 at 2:00 p.m. with a
children’s backstage experience at 12:45 p.m. Additionally, Mary Poppins and Bert the Chimney Sweep
will be making special character appearances at the Eldersburg Library at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March
14, and at A Likely Story Bookstore in Sykesville at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 28. After story time,
they will sign autographs and pose for pictures. Tickets will be available for sale during these

Transition Fair
Carroll County Public Schools will sponsor a Transition Fair on Friday, April 10, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
Carroll Community College. The fair is designed for high school students in grades 10-12 who have
Individualized Educational Plans/504 Plans and their families.
Parents and students will have the opportunity to attend a number of breakout sessions. There will be
sessions on employment and training opportunities, becoming your own self-advocate, preparing for
college, resource coordination, government benefits, and many other topics to assist students and
parents as they plan for the future.
The featured speaker will be Tori Saylor, whose life changed forever when she was diagnosed with
Aspergers Syndrome at the age of 19. During the speech, entitled My Journey to Self-Determination,
Saylor will discuss her journey from childhood to self-determined adulthood and relive the significant
milestones that helped to transform her into the independent adult that she has continuously strived to
be. The speech is scheduled to take place from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.

Spotlight on Youth
The Carroll County Public School System, in conjunction with the Kiwanis Clubs of Carroll County, will
sponsor the Sherri-Le Bream Spotlight on Youth on Saturday, April 11. The event will be held from 8
a.m. to 12 noon at Manchester Valley High School.
The event is named in honor of Sherri-Le Bream, former Director of High Schools, who worked with the
Kiwanis Clubs to bring this program to our high schools. This special day includes activities designed to
spotlight some of the wonderful talents and skills of our high school students. Students who would like
to participate must register by April 1. Activities will include the 12th annual Carroll Academic Challenge,
a juried art show, a chess tournament, and edible arts and floral design contests, as well as a film
festival. There also will be STEM/robotics demonstrations, ensemble and dance exhibitions, vocal and
instrumental music selections, and school displays and projects. An awards ceremony will be held at
11:30 a.m.

The Sound of Music – Francis Scott Key High School
See the hills come alive at the Francis Scott Key drama production of The Sound of Music. Join Maria and
the family Von Trapp as they sing their way through the darkest of times. The Sound of Music will be
showing April 17th, 18th, 24th, and 25th at 7 p.m. with a matinee on April 25th at 1 p.m. in the FSK
Auditorium. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for students/senior citizens, $3 for children ages 3-5, and $10

First Annual Military Appreciation Night – South Carroll High School
The South Carroll High School National Honor Society invites the community to join them as they host a
Military Appreciation Night on Monday, April 20, from 6:30 until 9:00 p.m. During this event, the school
will honor the contributions and sacrifice by our military service personnel through presentations on
military heroes. There will be silent auctions and monetary donations will be collected to support the
Travis Manion Foundation. Guests also are asked to bring clothing donations to support the Purple
Heart Service Foundation. South Carroll would like to honor all active military personnel, reservists, and

Recycling Initiative – Manchester Valley High and Ebb Valley Elementary Schools
The Manchester Valley High School Enviro Club is working with Ebb Valley Elementary School in a new
recycling initiative. The goal is to collect old, broken, exhausted markers and send them back to the
manufacturers for reuse.

Certamen Results – Westminster High School
Four Latin students from Westminster High School attended the Certamen at Tuscarora High School and
took second place in the Latin III category. The Certamen is a competition that reflects knowledge of
Latin grammar, history, culture, and vocabulary. Congratulations to Holly Burnett, Meghan Lockwood,
and Allison and Amy Tesch for demonstrating their superior overall knowledge of Latin. Marina Shipley
is the students’ Latin teacher.

French Day
Approximately 50 high school students from Westminster and Winters Mill High School celebrated
French language and culture during the 8th annual French Day hosted by McDaniel College on Tuesday,
March 10. During the day, students took a nationally competitive exam in French and participated in
workshops. They also enjoyed a French lunch and a Gypsy jazz music performance.

Recognition of Student Athletes – Manchester Valley High School
Manchester Valley High School senior Katie Leisher earned recognition as the Baltimore Sun Athlete of
the Week for winning 1A State Championships in the 3200 meters, 1600 meters and the 4x800 meters
relay at the MPSSAA 2015 State Championship. Junior Liz Leahy earned recognition as WTTR’s Athlete of
the Week for her 1A State Championship in the high jump at the MPSSAA 2015 State Championship by
jumping 4 feet 11inches, and her second place finish in the hurdles.

Teen Idol Finalist – Francis Scott Key High School
Francis Scott Key High School junior David “Michael” Darr was selected as a finalist in the 2015 Teen Idol
competition. He will be performing in this event, sponsored by the Washington County Free Library,
Maryland Theatre and After Five Productions, on Saturday, March 21, at 7 p.m. The competition will be
held at the Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown. He is competing for a $1000 prize. For ticket information,
