BOOMERS AND BEYOND
BOOSTER CLUB
MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
The recent Boomers and Beyond Booster Club
Membership Drive explained the mission of Boomers and
Beyond to promote activities for seniors, establish a senior center, promote Gunnison as “The Healthiest Little Community in
the USA,” and invite the community to become Boomer
Boosters for a $25.00 a year membership.
Starting in August 2013, a capital campaign was started to
raise matching funds for an addition to the Community Center
for a Senior Center. By the end of September, 2014, the Board
of Boomers and Beyond was extremely proud to announce that,
through financial assistance from over 150 donors, the $50,893
was raised that was necessary for the City of Gunnison to apply
for grants.
Ken Coleman, City Manager, Stu Ferguson, City
Councilman, Dan Ampietro, Director of Parks and Recreation,
and the Boomers Building Committee, Don Crosby, Rogene
McKiernan and Jerry Burgess met recently to finalize plans for
construction and use of the new addition to the Community
Center.
The folks in the increasing active aging population are
doing their homework and are finding that Gunnison has everything seniors are looking for in their retirement years; they like
to hike, ski, fish, boat, swim, snowmobile, snowshoe, attend theatre, take college classes, etc. Gunnison has the potential for
these seniors to become a huge economic engine as tax-paying
citizens as well as making Gunnison their home.
Quoting from the February 23, 2015, edition of Time
Magazine: “The challenge we face today is converting a world
built quite literally by and for the young into a world that supports and engages populations that live to be 100 years and
beyond....our education system serves the needs of children and
young adults and offers little more than recreation for experienced people.”
With the new Senior Center, Gunnison is poised to
accommodate the growing senior population in the Gunnison
Valley and keep pace with our changing culture.
All the Members of the Boom and Beyond Board thank
everyone who has worked so hard to accomplish these goals.
