Health Care Sign up at Resources for Human Development
On Saturday, March 22, 2014, 11am-3pm,
contracted representatives from Resources for
Human Development (RHD) signed-up local
uninsured residents for affordable health insurance, during an event sponsored by Greater
Enon Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Michael
Robinson - Senior Pastor. According to Wendy
Davis, Program Director-Health Insurance Navigator Program/RHD, this was one of RHD's
more successful sign-up events, "We had a family of three sign-up for full health insurance
coverage for .34 cents (per month)."
The best success story of the day was that,
"One young man signed-up for full health coverage, and he only has to pay .12 cents per
month," said Rev. Robinson. "That's amazing,
to God be the glory!"
Each individual and family’s premiums will
vary, depending on their financial situation. The
national deadline to sign-up for insurance coverage under the Affordable Healthcare Act is
March 31, 2014.

Get ready for Primary Election Day
Celebrating our 52nd Anniversary
2 - SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, March 28, 2014
thera martin milling
How many weeks until Primary election day…hmmm
let me see. Oh that would be about nine weeks from now,
counting the week we’re in. So who is running? There’s a
man by the name of Tom Wolfe who’s running for Governor on the Democratic side. He’s gotta be super
wealthy because he’s had ads on since late December of
2013, talk about leaving out the gate early. Then there’s
current PA State Treasurer Rob McCord who is also running as a Democrat for that
same seat and his TV ads just
started appearing in the last
week or so, at least here in
Philly. As for the rest of the
pack -- who are they?
Bottom line is there’s an
primary election coming and
how prepared are you to
vote? If you are already a
registered voter, very good.
All you need to do is take a
look at who all the candidates are,. Make some decisions about whom you will vote for and then do
your thing in the polling booth on e-day. If you are
not yet a registered voter you need to handle that
right away. You can get a blank voter registration
form by going on line at www.committeeofseventy.org. Print it out, fill it out and mail it to the
address on the form. Or, you can stop by any
elected officials office and ask for a blank voter
registration form and fill it out and mail it to the
address on the form,
I mentioned already that we have a Governor’s race
going on in this election cycle. Our incumbent Governor,
Republican Tom Corbett is stomping hard for votes
across the state. He’s still pretty popular amongst his Republican colleagues and voters, but the Democrats, well
Corbett can’t leave office fast enough for the Dems. The
way history plays out, usually, an incumbent worth their
weight, will get reelected. But if you’ve messed up on a
lot of issues or did not show clear support for the people
you represent on issues they’re passionate about, you
could be in trouble as you face reelection. My sources
tell me that Corbett just may be in trouble.
The other seats that are up for grabs would be State
House of Representatives seats and State Senate seats in
even numbered districts. Of course in the gubernatorial
race, the Lt. Governor is largely the choice of the winning party on both sides. So for example, lets say Rob
McCord wins on the Democratic side in the Primary
Election. He will then make his pick amongst top vote
getters on the Democratic side who tossed their hat in the
ring for the Lt. Governor’s seat.
Due to Bill Green, resigning from his city council at
large seat just some weeks back, there’s now a vacancy
in Philadelphia city council and Congressman Bob Brady

announced last week that Democratic Ward Leaders have
put their support behind State Rep. Neil of Northeast
Philadelphia for the job, which essentially means he’s a
shoe-in for that vacated council seat. In 2015, should he
want to keep the council seat he’ll have to operate a full
blown reelection campaign like all the other incumbent
council person in 2015.
On another note: Congratulations to all those Block
Captains and Block Clubs and organized blocks were
neighbors came out on this past Saturday, March 22,
2014 and cleaned and swept and started preparing their
block for what we all hope will be a wonderful summer
season in the city of brotherly love and sisterly effectiveness. Thanks to former State Representative John Myers,
who years ago when I was doing some work out of his
office as a consultant, put me on a project called, “Sweep
In Front of Your Door”. The concept was simple. Just
like the words I just said, sweep in front of your door.
Can you imagine how much cleaner the city would be if
everyone in Philly -- renters and home owners alike -just swept in front of their own doors? Plus when people
clean up and sweep up, believe it or not, it sends a message to would-be criminals, “People in this neighborhood, in this community on this block, do in fact care
about their community. So don’t plan on committing any
crime here. Then beyond cleaning up and sweeping up,
blocks do need to formally be organized. Somebody has
to be the block captain. Somebody has to be willing to
take charge and call meetings once in a while and give a
report to the people. Some one has to tell neighbors about
the crime in the area and let them know about clean up
dates and where to go to get free blue recycling bins for
example or where to go to possibly get free flowers to
plant, etc. There are avenues of help out here in Philly for
those that seek the help.
One by one, little by little, we can make Philadelphia a
cleaner, nicer, better city to live in and to raise our children and grandchildren in.

Council seat on May 20, 2014.
The special election to fill the seat vacated by former
City Councilman Bill Green will take place on the same
day as statewide primary elections. The winner of the
special election will serve out the remainder of former
Councilman Green’s term until Jan. 4, 2016.
Philadelphia residents intending to run as an independent candidate may begin circulating petitions to get on
the ballot immediately. According to the County Board of
Elections, a minimum of 1,785 valid signatures is required for ballot placement. Candidates registered as Democrat or Republican who wish to run as independents
must also re-register as independent before filing their
nomination papers, which are due by April 8, 2014.
Philadelphia residents wishing to run as independent
candidates should contact the County Board of Elections
(Room 142, City Hall or 215-686-3943) to obtain correct
guidance and the proper forms.
Council President Clarke’s issuance of the writ also
starts the clock on the nomination process for political
parties. The deadline for the Democratic, Republican and
Libertarian parties to file nomination certificates designating their candidates is April 8, 2014. The political parties select one candidate each according to their internal
party rules.
All registered voters, regardless of party, may vote in

The invisible backbone leaders of transforming social change

Celebrating our 52nd Anniversary

Women’s History Month is a reminder that in
every major American social reform movement,
women have always played a critical role.
Women at the forefront, acting as the catalyst
for progress when it needs to happen, make the
front pages and the history books. But women
have also always been the invisible backbone,
unseen but strong, of transforming social movements and of all anchor institutions in
society—our families, congregations,
schools, and communities—employing behind the
scenes quiet essential leadership and
organizational,
communication,
and fundraising
skills to get things done.
Many people know Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. first rose to national prominence
as a civil rights leader by serving as a
spokesperson in Montgomery, Alabama
during the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-1956. Not
enough of us recognize that there would not have been a
bus boycott that needed a leader without a vigilant community catalyst working behind the scenes looking for the
right spark to challenge hated bus segregation. The December 1955 arrest of Mrs. Rosa Parks, who refused to
move from her seat at the front of the “colored” section of
her bus when the White section got too full, was not the
first such arrest in Montgomery but it made history because she was the right public face that could mobilize the
entire Black community. And behind that bus boycott was
an unknown community leader named Jo Ann Robinson
who had been pushing for change in Montgomery buses
and had been putting the community infrastructure in
place long before Rosa Parks was arrested. Robinson was
vigilant and ready to spring into action when the right opportunity arose.
Jo Ann Robinson, an English professor at Alabama
State College, was president of the Women’s Political
Council (WPC), a group of Black women civic leaders in
Montgomery. She had been thrown off a city bus in 1949
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity
seeking Scholarship Applicants
The Philadelphia
Alumni Chapter of Kappa
Alpha Psi Fraternity is
once again seeking applicants for its annual Hiliary
H. Holloway, Esquire
Scholarship Award program. The chapter's scholarship program, named
after the late Hiliary H.
Holloway, Esquire, the
22nd Grand Polemarch
and a Laurel Wreath recipient of Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity, as well as a
longtime member of the
Philadelphia Alumni
Chapter, is designed to aid
promising minority male
students in the public high
schools & charter schools
of Philadelphia who are
planning to matriculate in
college following their
graduation from high
school. Applications and
further info can be obtained from the student's
Principal or guidance
counselor. All applications
must be postmarked by
April 12, 2014 to be considered.
The amount of the
scholarship award is
$2,000. Four $2,000 scholarships will be awarded in
2014: the Joseph N.
Williams Scholarship to a
graduating student in the
Achievement Academy,
the chapter's Guide Right
mentorship program; the
Dr. Melvin L. Jackson
Scholarship; and the Hiliary H. Holloway, Esquire
Scholarship (2 recipients).
From the pool of applicants, the Ramon C. Gregory Scholarship in the
amount of $1,000 will also
be awarded. The Philadelphia Alumni Chapter uses
its scholarship grants to
enhance the opportunities
for minority males to acquire a college education.
The organization seeks to
reach and assist those
young men who have
demonstrated academic
promise, but have not necessarily accumulated the
highest averages. Additionally, the need for financial assistance is
fundamental.
As a chapter of one of
the nine predominately
African-American national
Greek letter organizations,
most of which were
founded in the first quarter
of the 20th century, it is
quite fitting that the
Philadelphia Alumni
Chapter of Kappa Alpha
Psi is involved with supporting educational attainment through the awarding
of scholarships. This
scholarship program is indicative of the philanthropic, mentorship &
community service initiatives for which the chapter
has been known in
Philadelphia since being
chartered on May 25,
1922. Students who meet
the stated criteria should
contact their Principal or
guidance counselor about
this scholarship opportunity immediately. An application can also be
downloaded from Philly
Alumni's web site,
www.phillykappas.org.

SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, March 28, 2014 -3
for sitting too close to the front although the bus was
nearly empty. This infuriating experience was all too
common among Montgomery’s Black residents—and the
WPC had already chosen to make changing the bus system one of their priorities. Their 1954 letter to Montgomery Mayor W.A. Gayle raised the possibility of a
city-wide bus boycott: “More and more of our people are
already arranging with neighbors and friends to ride to
keep from being insulted and humiliated by bus drivers . .
. We, the Council, believe that when this matter has been
put before you and the Commissioners, that agreeable
terms can be met in a quiet and unostensible manner to
the satisfaction of all concerned.” But when the women’s
requests for “agreeable terms” went unanswered, their
plans for a boycott went forward. They just needed the
right moment and face—and when that moment came Jo
Ann Robinson knew what to do.
She and other women did not wait for male leaders to
decide on a response before acting. She later wrote about
the night after Mrs. Parks was arrested: “Some of the
[Women’s Political Council] officers previously had discussed plans for distributing thousands of notices announcing a bus boycott. Now the time had come for me to
write just such a notice.” She called her colleague John
Cannon, chair of Alabama State College’s business department, and two trusted students, who immediately
agreed to meet her at the college where Cannon had access to the copying machines. They worked together until
four in the morning making copies of the leaflet Jo Ann
Robinson had prepared: “Another Negro woman has been
arrested and thrown in jail because she refused to get up
out of her seat on the bus for a white person to sit down . .
. This has to be stopped. Negroes have rights, too, for if
Negroes did not ride the buses, they could not operate.
Three-fourths of the riders are Negroes, yet we are arrested, or have to stand over empty seats. If we do not do
something to stop these arrests, they will continue. The
next time it may be you, or your daughter, or mother. This
woman’s case will come up on Monday. We are, therefore, asking every Negro to stay off the buses Monday in
protest of the arrest and trial. Don’t ride the buses to
work, to town, to school, or anywhere on Monday. You
can afford to stay out of school for one day if you have no
other way to go except by bus. You can also afford to stay
out of town for one day. If you work, take a cab, or walk.
But please, children and grown-ups, don’t ride the bus at
all on Monday.”
She and her two students worked for three more hours
mapping out distribution routes, and as soon as she finished teaching her 8 o’clock class that morning Jo Ann
Robinson began calling other members of the WPC and
driving around the city to meet them at strategic drop-off
locations with bundles of leaflets. She said: “By 2 o’clock, thousands of the mimeographed handbills had
changed hands many times. Practically every black man,
woman, and child in Montgomery knew the plan and was
passing the word along. No one knew where the notices
had come from or who had arranged for their circulation,
and no one cared. Those who passed them on did so efficiently, quietly, and without comment. But deep within
the heart of every black person was a joy he or she dared
not reveal.”
Under Jo Ann Robinson’s direction, more than 50,000
leaflets were produced and distributed that day. The boycott was an enormous success, and as the day-long boycott became a year-long crusade, women remained its
backbone. When a public spokesperson was needed at the
very start of the boycott, behind the scenes Robinson,
who was an active member of Montgomery’s Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, recommended her congregation’s
new 26-year-old pastor Martin Luther King, Jr. to lead the
newly-formed Montgomery Improvement Association.
The WPC continued to be instrumental in organizing the
carpools that made the boycott possible. Women formed
fundraising clubs to sell sweet potato pies and other
baked goods and competed every week to see which club
could earn the most money to support the Montgomery
Improvement Association. The federal lawsuit that was
filed and successfully struck down bus segregation,
Browder v. Gayle, had four Black women plaintiffs.
Black women were the unrecognized faceless leaders of
change aided by some prominent White women like Virginia Durr.

Callie House
Black History
Celebrating our 53rd Anniversary
4 - SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, March 28, 2014
junious r. stanton
March is Woman’s History Month and I was thinking
the other day about a dynamic African-American woman
I read about a few years ago named Callie House. Callie
House is significant for several reasons. She was in the
forefront of what later became known as the reparations
movement. She was born into bondage in 1861 in
Rutherford County Tennessee. According to records she
married William House in 1883. They had five children.
She helped support her family by taking in laundry.
Mrs. House became intrigued when she saw a
poster advertising reparations
for African-Americans. Ironically the idea was being promoted by a white Southern
Democrat named William
Vaughan who called for the
US government to give former slaves a “pension” similar to the one given to
Civil War veterans for their service during the
War Between the States. It wasn't that Vaughan
cared about Black people so much, he knew that
by giving pensions to millions of ex-slaves it
would help improved the economic conditions in
the South for whites!
In 1884 Callie House joined Isaiah Dickerson
who had worked with Vaughan in Nebraska to
form The National Ex-Slave Relief, Bounty and
Pension Association. House and Dickerson traveled extensively throughout the South promoting the idea of
“pensions” or reparations for ex-slaves. They organized
and formed local affiliate groups everywhere they went.
The organization sustained itself through dues from its
members. The National Ex-Slave, Relief, Bounty and
Pension Association also functioned on the local levels as
a mutual aid organization providing burial expenses and
support for the sick and infirm. The organization was
unique in its focus and organization because it was also
political. They agitated for reparations but also supported
candidates and paid lobbyists to push for legislation on
behalf of African-Americans.
Callie House was the chief spokesperson for the organization for almost twenty years during a time when
violence against Blacks and wanton murder were the
norm. She was a widow with five children who fulfilled
her obligations to her family by taking in laundry while
working hard to gain pensions for Africans who had labored during slavery; right after Reconstruction when the
hatred and animus towards blacks in general but particularly “uppity” Blacks (a term whites used to define
Africans in America who aspired for better for themselves and their race) was extremely high.
Government sanctioned violence was unleashed
against Blacks who were moving, organizing and agitating for their rights during a reign of terror that saw the
creation and rise of the Klu Klux Klan and other rabid
white supremacist groups in the South following Reconstruction. House’s efforts brought attention on herself and
the National Ex-Slave, Relief, Bounty and Pension Association from both blacks and whites who supported her
efforts, feared what she was doing or who had conflicting
agendas to pursue. Whites especially felt threatened by a
bourgeoning national movement that was as well organized and supported as hers agitating for pensions for millions of ex-slaves especially since they were attempting
to influence Congressmen to push for such legislation in
the US House of Representatives.

Association held national and local conventions, and
spread the word about reparations to grass roots Blacks.
Black people many of them who were former slaves
readily took to the notion the government should pay
them for the years they labored without pay. The federal
government especially the federal Pension Bureau became alarmed by the excitement House’s movement was
generating. The Pension Bureau was able to persuade the
US Postal Service to ban the National Ex-Slave Relief,
Bounty and Pension Association from using the mail
service which severely hampered their organizing and
business activities. “The government kept an eye on the
work of the Ex-Slave Association. House, as assistant
secretary of the association, traveled a lot, visiting local
chapters, but the organization relied largely on the use of
the Post Office to communicate and receive dues to fund
the national campaign. The Pensions Bureau of the federal government reported that the pension movement ‘is
setting the Negroes wild...and making anarchists of
them,’ and that were it to continue, the government “will
have some very serious questions to settle in connection
with the control of the race.’ On the request of the Pensions Bureau, the Post Office informed the Ex-Slave Association that they would be denied the use of the mails,
claiming the Association was duping ‘ignorant’ ex-slaves
in a fraud scheme. Despite many letters in protest,
demonstrating their honesty and reminding them that
they had a constitutional right to do their work, they
never regained access to the mails.”
The Story of the First Reparations Movement http://socialistworker.org/2007-1/628/628_13_Reparations.shtml
The government began to monitor the organization’s
activities more closely, especially when in 1916 four
Blacks sued the US Treasury for $68,073,388.99 in cotton taxes traced to slave labor in Texas. (And that was
just for the state of Texas!) The suit was subsequently
dismissed by the D.C. Court of Appeals on the grounds
of government immunity. But House’s activities raised
the profile of the reparations movement and brought her
under further scrutiny from the government.
Because the organization relied upon the US Postal
Service to communicate with their members and the public, collect dues and pay their lobbyists, the federal gov-

Aquamarine is the stone for the month of March
In legends, aquamarine has its origin in the treasure
chests of the mermaid. It is though to bring good luck and
fortune to sailors. It is believed that if a person dreams of
aquamarine he or she will meet new friends. According to
ancient traditions aquamarine will guarantee a long and

Dedicated to Joe Bush, Kristen Hunter,

Karim Diff, M. Arabe, Kwame Nkrumah,
Shirley Graham DuBois and Cafe Tournon
The 1949 Newspaper headline in bold type read:
"Young Quaker City Author Becomes a Benedict."
Below in smaller type is the news story, "Miss Mary
Sewell married to William Smith, Philly Author."
The article is about the marriage of two prominent
young African Americans in the City of Philadelphia,
sixty five years ago.
The Last of the Conquerors
This special media item about two blacks still in their
early twenties begins: "Wearing an original gown of
ivory-tone satin, Miss Mary Virginia Sewell was married
Saturday afternoon to William Gardner Smith, author of
The Last Conquerors. The double-ring ceremony read by
Rev. Jesse F. Anderson was performed at St. Thomas
Episcopal Church, 52nd and Parrish Streets. James
Townsend was organist. The bride was given in marriage
by her father, Dr. Lemuel T. Sewell." Over 400 members
of the cognoscenti and African American elite were in
attendance at the reception held in the Sewell home.
Among those attending were: Julian Abele, Gwendolyn
Reynolds, Joseph Hunter, Sylvia Harrod, Phyllis Earl,
Paul Dandridge, Shirley Redcross, Anita Trueheart, D'Alvarez Rathel, Charles Mintess and Richard Gardner."
In 1948, one year before his marriage, William G.
Smith, a twenty one year old writer from South Philly
gained international fame with book reviews in the New
York Times, Muncher Kulturpressienst, Saturday Review
of Literature as well as The Pittsburgh Courier, Phylon
and Crisis. Indeed, the Dean of the Negro Literati, Dr.
Alain Locke proclaimed in DAWN PATROL; A Review
of the Literature of the Negro for 1948: " William Gardner Smith's war novel, Last of the Conquerors' caused
Professor Locke to realize, 'Other work, either of Mr.
Smith or other G.I's must eventually [explore the full
artistic impact of the theme]...with what is doubtless the
fictional dynamite of our decade, the Negro soldier's
World War ll's experiences."
Black World War ll Novel Set in Germany
During Occupation
Writing in his dissertation on the extraordinary career
of Smith a young African American from South Philly,
Dr. Hodges states: "Last of the Conquerors is a sensitive
first novel concerning Afro Americans serving in the
U.S. Army as occupation troops in Germany, immediately after World War 2. The novel deals with a number
of soldier's individual reaction to racism in the countryside of war-torn Germany. Many instances of emotional
shock fill the pages as the men are scheduled to return
home to racial prejudice in America.
The irony of not wanting to return is explained by one
of the characters, who really speaks for all of them: 'I'll

ernment used the Comstock Act of 1871 as a pretext to
covertly spy on House by claiming she was using the US
Postal Service to defraud the public. The US Postmaster
General A. S. Burleson actively sought an indictment
against Mrs. House. He claimed she was soliciting
money under false pretenses. (A tactic they would also
successfully use later against Marcus Garvey).
In 1916 charges were brought against Callie House
claiming she defrauded ex-slaves. An all white male jury
found her guilty despite the fact House had not benefited
from the money whatsoever, there were no named victims in the charges (since when do white people care
about black people especially ex-slaves?) and the evidence against her was extremely flimsy. Isaiah Dickerson
was also framed in Atlanta but his conviction was later
overturned.
The organization dissolved when House and Dickerson had to spend valuable time and resources defending
themselves against the scurrilous and disingenuous
charges the government brought against them. Callie
House served nine months of her one year and a day sentence and was released for good behavior.
When she was released from prison Mrs. House returned to the Nashville area and lived out her life earning
a living as a washerwoman and seamstress until her transition in 1928.
Mary Francis Berry wrote a book about Callie Hose
entitled My Face Is Black Is True: Callie House and the
Struggle for Ex-Slave Reparations and she does justice to
this bold and fearless woman. Callie House deserves
wider recognition for her role in attempting to gain reparations for millions of former slaves. She is the type of
woman we should recognize, honor and celebrate during
Women’s History Month.

Smith later moving to France and
becoming an editor and correspondent with Agence
Press France (the
equivalent of the

in the USA), writing the only
known novel on
the Algerian massacre in France
where Smith's

count circled the
globe. But even more ironic is that Smith became a
French foreign correspondent to the United States dispatched to the U.S. to cover mass uprising by African
Americans in major cities during the seething sixties.
Educated at Barratt, Benjamin Franklin High
and Temple University
Who is this outstanding literary figure whose novel,
South Street preceded David Bradley's by decades? Why
is it that he is being rediscovered in Europe and Africa
and much less so in North America and Philadelphia?
How is it that this product of Temple University, Benjamin Franklin High School, Barrett Jr. High, the Pittsburgh Courier and the streets of Philadelphia remain so
little known? Could not young writers, teachers, administrators and students in the School District of Philadel-
phia benefit from a knowledge of this extraordinary
human being and global citizen in an era before the term
became popular? Did you know that one of your own,
was brought to Ghana by President Kwame Nkrumah to
help launch the West African nation's television network?
Not only would his novels make powerful film and television in an era of "Scandals" but it may very well offer a
different portrait, a more nuanced perspective on what
can only be described as a multivariant African American
community.
William Gardner Smith's friend and fellow writer,
Joseph Bevans Bush III, must be credited with keeping
Smith's name before the public through his articles and
public references. Joe speaks of his boyhood friend in
this manner: "I recall him writing a story on my brother,
Missy (Gerald Whitaker Bush) who had graduated from
Barratt Junior High School with the scholastic honors for
which he awarded a trophy by a group of South Philadelphia businessmen."
Mary Sewell and William Gardner Smith met as
teenagers at Summer Picnic in Fairmount Park
In a wide ranging exclusive interview with the woman
he married sixty five years ago, we not only gain a
greater sense of the man, William Gardner Smith. We
also learn more about a woman who has devoted her life
in providing quality social services and inspiration to
generations of those who knew her in church, school, social circles and in the larger community. Mary Sewell
Smith is an interlocutor of power and grace, a raconteur
who ranks alongside the best, a woman with an ethic of
caring, sense of belonging and one lacking in self-possession despite her many accomplishments. Her love, respect and pride in William Gardner Smith is
unmistakable.
When asked how she met Bill long before he became
famous and before most people knew he was a writer,
Sewell explains: "Bill and I met as teenagers at a picnic
in Fairmount Park I was sitting under a tree. Bill was already a reporter for the Pittsburgh Courier. He wrote the

Mr. Lawrence took

Derrell Lawrence
some questions that
we will share with
you. Get to know more about the man behind the production.
SYJ: Who is Derrell Lawrence?å
Lawrence: I'm just an ordinary person who is trying to
do extraordinary things. Growing up in a rough and
toxic neighborhood in South Philly as a teenager I became a product of that toxicity. When I was young I got
into all kinds of trouble and always experienced tragedy
throughout my life. I'm a chameleon, an introvert, I know
when and how to adapt to other people personalities and
situations. Also by nature a cool, down to earth, humble
person who loves God his family.
SYJ: How does your family feel about your career into
the entertainment industry?
Lawrence: If it makes money they're happy lol. My
family and close circle of friends are extremely supported of my journey. Some didn't accept it with open
arms but it wasn't about what they wanted, as long as I
was happy with pursuing my desire they were with me
every step of the way to support me.
When things aren't going right or as fast as I thing
things should, they're always my perfect balance.
SYJ: How many cities has the play toured?
Lawrence: We've toured in Phoenix, AZ; Montgomery, AL; Portsmouth, VA; Birmingham, AL;
Orlando, FL; Baltimore, MD and now back to Philly
on April 4&5 @The Merriam
Theater. During this amazing run I had the pleasure to
bring on board A'ngela Winbush, Keke Wyatt, Michel'le,
Christopher Williams, Sean Blakemore, Meli'sa Morgan,
Tionne "Tboz" Watkins and Tony Terry.
SYJ: Can you give us a heads up as to cities that are
on your tour schedule for the 2014-15 season?
Lawrence: We plan to continue to hit the east coast,
mid west and back to the west coast very soon. Stay
tuned for details.
SYJ: What is the ultimate message would you like people to gain from this play?
Lawrence: The message I want people to get from this
play is that you have to set boundaries on your relationSee “Do you trust” page 8

ship between your mate and your friends. When people
are in a great and healthy relationship we have the tendency to share and discuss how great our relationship is.
But sometimes we share a little too much information,
personal, private and even intimate details about our
mate. By doing such YOU open the door for people to
become more intrigued about the relationship. Not to say
they deliberately want to steal your mate but the way
YOU keep talking about how great they, the great thing
they do to and for you, eventually people will want what
you have. Some things are suppose to be respected and
sacred. A relationship is one of them.

SYJ: Would you like to share any inspirational words?
Lawrence: Believe in God, Believe in yourself. You
can do anything if you set your mind and heart to. Surround yourself with positive and productive people. Just
because you weren't born with a silver spoon doesn't
mean you will never receive one. But find that word,
words or phrase that specifically
would ignite you. Everyone has buttons but everyone
button isn't pushed by the same thing.
SYJ: Finally, what is your favorite quote, phrase or
scripture?
Lawrence: My favorites are: " I'm just doing me
whatever that is." "If you don't stand for something,
you'll fall for anything." "I can do all things through
Christ who strengthens me."
We thank Derrell Lawrence for taking time out to
speak with us here at Supreme Gospel Entertainment. We

Courier's teenage column. Bill's column was very popular. Everybody read it! And everybody knew Bill. His
column came out every Tuesday and every Tuesday you
looked to get the newspaper to see what was in Bill's column about the latest party or who was making eyes at
who. I was an innocent little teenager and someone told
me he wanted to meet me. He was also very athletic. He
played baseball. He was a pitcher. After he finished his
game, he came over. He used to dress very nice. This
was a hot day and he had on a bright nice white starched
shirt and a jacket. Bill came over and said, 'I've been
waiting to meet you!
People say that you think I am egotistical. 'So I said,
"Are you?' Bill said, 'Actually, I am kind of shy.' He
wasn't shy. I think a lot of what came across as brashness
and forcefulness was some inner reservations."
Whatever reservations may have appeared at that time,
five years later he was to marry the young Girl's High
lady he met under the tree in Fairmount Park. How was
Mary to know how much her life would change. Two
years after the wedding, they sailed to Europe and settled
in France.
dictatorial tide too. French critics have all pointed out
that neither Doctor Strangelove or Seven Days in May
could have been made in France. It's not possible. And I
talked to a French publisher about my last book [Stone
Face]; he told me it was very courageous to have written
the book, but we can't publish it France. ..
Ending with how American racism impacted his decision to move with his young wife to Paris, Smith illuminates much. Wayblackmemories: " My feeling was one
of the disgust and rage. When I wanted to go on vacation, I had to suddenly stop and look and say now wait a
minute, am I accepted there?
People can very easily say, 'let's go to Florida for a vacation. I have a lot of white friends and they can say it
just like that. And when I say, now wait a minute are you
sure it's going to be all right, they look at me and say,
what are you talking about, you're sensitive or something. And then we'd go and they would find out. It was
constant irritations like this -- and the daily headlines and
so forth which got me to the point psychologically where
I just didn't want to write, because I didn't want to communicate . I didn't have anything else to say. To communicate means you like the other person That had been
true with the first books when I had been younger."
What Led This Highly Praised Black Novelist and
Journalist to Move to France and Return
only as a French News Correspondent?
Those engaged in discussions about Black Expatriates
in France often ask why would they leave the USA?
As the only African American invited to participate on
a panel designed to discuss the expatriate tradition, Smith
provides the following biographical and historical insight: "Now specifically, two main things drove me out
of the United States; negative things. I had been in Germany before. I went there in the occupation Army, and I
was there a little over a year. When I got back to the
States, I had the feeling of stifling. The two negative
things were politics and race. McCarthy was around. I
don't get along very well in that kind of atmosphere.
My professor at Temple University, Professor Dunham, wrote a book, Man Against Myth. And he was
called before the McCarthy committee, and he said,
when questioned, 'I refuse to recognize your existence.'
Temple University fired him. I saw the ones who had
suffered for just standing up and saying no, who didn't
join any bandwagon, who wanted to think for themselves. Here in France -- well, it's one of the freest countries in the world, but of course it has its paradoxical,

Jamie Foxx joi8ns his co stars of “The Amazing Spiderman 2”: and Earth Hour Super Heros in Blue Revolution. Foxx, who plays the villain Electro, in the highly
anticipated motion picture, Spider man 2, is expected to
bring new viewers to the theater.
As part of Earth Hour Blue, the revolutionary program
launched by WWF’s Earth Hour, Foxx will support
‘Light Up A Village’, a clean energy project from WWFUganda. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 actor is urging participants to go online and contribute funds to the ‘Light
Up a Village’ crowdfunding project, which will provide
solar lights and energy efficient mud stoves to families
living around an area in Uganda that has come to be
known as the “Earth Hour Forest.” Through the simple
steps of supporting these vulnerable communities, the
project aims to empower the locals to become the future
protectors of the soon to be rehabilitated forest area.
Foxx was inspired by a passionate video from a small
community of Super Heroes in Uganda who came together to show how the project could protect the newly
planted trees by meeting the basic energy needs of the locals. The video explains how just one energy efficient
mud stove can save up to 33 trees from being cut down
annually and also save money by reducing a family’s expenses on firewood and charcoal.
“Earth Hour isn’t just about lights off – it’s about people across the world coming together throughout the year
to join forces to improve the planet. If you haven’t yet,
you need to get involved. Never underestimate your
power. Never underestimate what you can do,” said
Foxx.

In conjunction with the Earth Hour 2014 celebrations
in Uganda, one million trees will be planted across the
country by youths over the next year, with the majority
earmarked to help fill the 2700 hectares of land marked

Andy Ridley, CEO and Co-Founder for Earth Hour, announced today, “What we’re seeing is a massive group of
Super Heroes around the world who are calling on support
for incredible campaigns to address the environmental issues we’re facing in our daily lives. That’s why we built

McUnion
Celebrating our 53rd Anniversary
Toby Rich
This weeks rap from the
Mayor of Girard Ave. Toby
Rich examines what I call
McUnion. I call it that because there was a protest at
the McDonalds at Broad
and Girard about better
wages.
You see the people that
work in the fast food industry would like to make
at least 15 dollars an hour. When you think about
it, they deserve it. They would also like to have a union
so that they can feel united and protected. I was under the
impression that only young folks atill in school and old
folks on social security worked for McDonalds.
So in my own uninformed way, I did not think that a
union was necessary. However, I was so wrong. You see
you have people that are trying to raise a family that
work for McDonalds. Now I know that they do many
things for our communities like the gospel awards and
that they are very involved in the churches in all the
neighborhoods. However, their employees need money to
raise their children and pay rent and pay the day care
centers that watch their children while they work. It is
not easy, but they get by -- not to mention what they go
through with sometimes crazy customers. They get
cussed at and get food thrown at them. We all go through
things on jobs that work with the public. It’s not like you
don’t know what you are in for when you take a fast food
job. I remember when Dan Quale was Vice President and
when it was said that no jobs were available he made the
comment that just last night he saw a job wanted sign in
a neighborhood McDonalds. The whole country responded by asking if he really thinks that a job at McDonald’s is one that can launch a career. I just took that
for normal Republican ignorance.
Anyway a Mr. Justin Watson spoke at this rally. He is
a young man from North Philly that is 29 years old and
grew up in the Stawberry Mansion part of North Philly
around 32nd and Dauphin. He has been working for McDonalds for two years. He has two young girls that he is
trying to help take care of with their Mother and he feels
that the 15 dollars an hour could be a big help to him
being the kind of father that he would like to be. We all
know that money is not everything but it is a big help. I
want to make a point. I asked Mr. Justin if he had a Police record and he said no and I don’t know about you but

SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, March 28, 2014 - 11
I was impressed because most young men from North
Philly are expected to have some kind of record and one
more thing, he was damn proud to be working at McDonalds. That goes to show that not all young men would
rather sell drugs then have a job at McDonalds or any
other place that they would be working honestly. They
have chosen honest work instead of putting themselves in
the way of going to prison like some folks would rather
they do. I am very proud to see that. It means that some
of the stuff that we old heads are trying to let our young
brothers know about jail is getting through and that is a
true blessing.
Now the other speaker was a young woman named
Robyn Richardson. She too was a fast food worker that
felt a raise and union was in order. However she was
from Fortworth Texas. She has been in Philly because her
child’s father is from Philly. I can’t say that I am so
proud of him -- not that he needs or would want my approval and for that I am glad because from the looks of
things she is not getting any help from him. For the most
part, she is raising their son alone. He seems like a dead
beat daddy I am ashamed that he is from Philly because
for the most part I know that we Old Heads feel that we
are teaching our young folks not to repeat that behavior if
you can help. All of our children deserve much better.
Any way she too feels that 15 dollars a hour can help her
pay rent and have money to feed and clothe her son.
State Senator named Daylin Leach was also there in
support of the better wage and he is from Jenkintown. I
must say that I was very impressed that he came to Philly
to support something like this. I did find out from Senator Kitchens office that he is trying to run for Congress,
so it may be some politics involved but politics are
everywhere. Like Don King would say, “only in America”. Anyway I hope they get the raise and the union.
Also, for Womans Month my Woman for this week is a
young woman. Some of you may remember her Mother
and Father, her name is Aminah Shabazz, who is a doctor
and her sister’s name is Safiyya Shabazz and she is a
lawyer. Their parents are Jerimia and Andrea. I know
that both of them would be so proud of both of them if
they were here. So all of us will show how proud of them
we are. With love, honor and respect from your Mayor of
Girard Avenue, Toby Rich. Peace.

Transforming social change
Jo Ann Robinson continued to work quietly behind the
scenes, but was known well enough to become a target of
violence like Dr. King and many others: one police officer
threw a rock through her home’s window and another
poured acid on her car. That did not stop her. As Dr. King
put it, “Apparently indefatigable, she, perhaps more than
any other person, was active on every level of the
protest.” Meanwhile the boycott she and other women
began sparked a movement that changed our nation and
world. Jo Ann Robinson and other unsung heroines of the
civil rights movement remain role models for the tireless
indispensable behind the scenes leaders whose strength
and determination we desperately need right now. Our
children are waiting every day for strong Black women
leaders and their allies to break up the Cradle to Prison
Pipeline® crisis and get them the quality early childhood
Marian Wright Edelman is President of the Children's Defense

Celebrating our 53rd Anniversary
12 - SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, March 28, 2014
Psalm 139:14--New International Version (NIV)
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully
made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
John 7:53-8:11--King
James Version (KJV)
53 And every man went
unto his own house.
8 Jesus went unto the
mount of Olives.
2 And early in the morning
he came again into the temple, and all the people came
unto him; and he sat down,
and taught them.
3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto
him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had
set her in the midst,
4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in
adultery, in the very act.
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such
should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to
accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger
wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up
himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin
among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the
ground.
9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their
own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the
eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and
the woman standing in the midst.
10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but
the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those
thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her,
Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far
above rubies.
11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so
that he shall have no need of spoil.
12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of
her life.
13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly
with her hands.
14 She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her
food from afar.
15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat
to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit
of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her
candle goeth not out by night.
19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands
hold the distaff.
20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she
reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for
all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth
among the elders of the land.
24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth
girdles unto the merchant.
25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall
rejoice in time to come.
26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her
tongue is the law of kindness.
27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and
eateth not the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman
that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own
works praise her in the gates.
Proverbs 31-- King James Version (KJV)
31 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his
mother taught him.
2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and
what, the son of my vows?
3 Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to
that which destroyeth kings.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to
drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the
judgment of any of the afflicted.
6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish,
and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember
his misery no more.
8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such
as are appointed to destruction.
9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the
cause of the poor and needy.
Mark 5:25-34 King James Version (KJV)
25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood
twelve years,
26 And had suffered many things of many physicians,
and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered,
but rather grew worse,
27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall
be whole.
29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried
up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that
plague.
30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that
virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press,

But they can’t touch

When I try to show them,

The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts, The grace of my style.

Phenomenal woman, That’s me.
Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud. I say,

The value of counting our blessings
C H E S T E R , PA
Celebrating our 53rd Anniversary
rev. dr. wm. rocky brown, 3rd
Whether you realize it or not, one of the
most effective methods of experiencing physical, mental emotional and spiritual therapy, is
to take a retrospective view of your life and
count the many blessings which God has bestowed upon you.
Yes, there is an unparalleled kind of therapy
which goes on everything time you count your
blessings. You see, you can’t count complaints
and blessings at the same time. If you don’t
believe what I’m saying,
try it for yourself. I dare
you to try it! Let your
mind flash back upon the
blessings, which you have
received in the last
twenty-four hours. Go
ahead and start counting
your blessings of the last
twenty-four hours. If you
need some help, I’ll assist
you:
You’ve been breathing God’ air. Your life
has been sustained by the power of God, (Paul said in
Acts 17:28, “For in Him we live and move and have our
being.”) You’ve had some food to eat. You’ve had some
water and some other beverages to drink. You’ve had
your eyes to see, ears to hear. Tongue to talk, you were
able to lie down on a beauty-rest mattress and sleep all
night long while the angels watched over your beside.
You were awakened this morning, not by your alarm
clock, but by the invisible finger of God. When you
woke up, your body had been re-vitalized, you were
clothed in your right mind, you noticed that your bed was
not your cooling board and that your cover was not your
winding sheet. You had the right exercise of your limbs
and you were able to get up and start on another day’s
journey.
And I know, you could go on and on about them, but
that’s about two-dozen blessings to begin with in less
than twenty-four hours. And while you were thinking
about those blessings, you didn’t have time to complain.
The very thought of those blessings caused you t o smile

and there’s no way that you can smile and frown at the
same time.
So, if you want to feel better, think better, as well as
look better, count your blessings.
I don’t know the exact time, but somebody said that it
was early. It took place in a cemetery on the out-skirts of
Jerusalem. The one who died on Friday came back to
life. The one, who had been buried, got up out of the
grave. The one who had been crucified was resurrected.
The poet expressed it n these words:
“When I’m worried and I can’t sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep
Then I fall asleep counting my blessing.
“So count your blessings
Name them one by one
Count your blessings
See what God has done
Count your blessings
Name them one by one
Count your many blessings
See what God has done.”
When my bank-roll is getting small
I think of the time when I had nothing at all
Then I fall asleep counting my blessing.
I think about a nursery
And I picture curly heads
And one by one I counting them
As they slumber in their beds.
So, if you’re worried and cannot sleep
Just count your blessings instead of sheep
Then you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings”
Beloved, when I begin to count all of God’s blessings,
my trials, my tribulations and all of my complaints seem
to take a back seat. I begin to feel so good that those
aches and pains seem to leave me. I’ll tell you, there’s
therapy in counting your blessings.
Come on now and let’s count our blessings. He forgives our sins – that’s one;
He heals our diseases – that’s two; He redeemeth us
from destruction – that’s three. He crowneth us with loving kindness – that makes four; He satisfies our mouths
with good things so that our youth is renewed – that’s
five; He executeth righteousness and justice – that’s six;
And then He’s merciful, He’s gracious, He’s slow to
anger and He is plentious in mercy. That’s seven, eight,
nine and ten.
But I can’t stop counting right there. I can’t close
without telling you about a blessing that took place on
Friday almost 2000 years ago. It took place out on a
lonely hill called Calvary. They crucified a man called
Jesus and I have to count that as a blessing, because He
died that I might live.
And then there’s just one more blessing that I have to
mention. It happened on the following Sunday morning.
This is Rev Dr Wm Rocky Brown, 3rd letting you
know that GOD and I Love you and we approve this
message because we want to motivate your mind, body
& soul. So be happy and enjoy the blessings of The
LORD today my friend!

In Iditarod and retirement, prep is key
C H E S T E R , PA
Social security
14 - SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, March 28, 2014
patrick l. robinson, sr.
The Iditarod Trail
Sled Dog Race, held
each March in
Alaska, is one of the
harshest, most challenging races known
to man (or dog).
Mushers embark on a
race from Anchorage
to Nome that takes
between nine and 15
days. Contestants bear sub-zero temperatures with gale-force winds that can
cause wind chills as low as negative 100
degrees Fahrenheit! It takes endurance,
preparation, and careful planning to
make it from start to finish. The same
can be said for your race toward retirement and
Social Security. No one would hit the trail without being
ready for the challenges. Similarly, no worker today
should be navigating toward retirement without a little
bit of preparing, planning, and stick-to-itiveness.
Choosing your steps is as important as selecting the right
sled dogs. Your first step in planning for a comfortable
retirement is to look at your Social Security Statement,
which you can do online easily with a my Social Security
account. The online Statement is easy to use and provides estimates you should consider in planning for your
retirement. It provides estimates for disability and survivors benefits, making the Statement an important financial planning tool. Your Statement allows you to
review and ensure your earnings are accurately posted to
your Social Security record. This feature is important because Social Security benefits are based on average earnings over your lifetime. If the information is incorrect, or
you have earnings missing from your record, you may
not receive all of the benefits to which you are entitled in
the future. Visit www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount to set
up a my Social Security account and get started. Before heading into the snowy terrain, you want to make
sure you have prepared for a number of different possible
obstacles on the trail. For retirement planning, you’ll
want to test out the Retirement Estimator to see how
changes in your income, retirement age, and other variables may change your overall plan. Use our Retirement

Out in the cold, you’ll be thankful for the provisions
you’ve brought along. In retirement, you’ll understand
why it was so important for you to save early on. The
sooner you begin your financial planning, the better off
you will be. Social Security replaces about 40 percent of
the average worker’s pre-retirement earnings, but most
financial advisors say that you will need 70 percent or
more of pre-retirement earnings to live comfortably. You
also will need other savings, investments, pensions or re-

this thing.
33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing
what was done in her, came and fell down before him,
and told him all the truth.

thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
John 4:7-29 King James Version (KJV)
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water:
Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

buy meat.)
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is
it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a
woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with
the Samaritans.
10 Jesus answeråed and said unto her, If thou knewest

have given thee living water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to
draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast
thou that living water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave
us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children,
and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall
give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give
him shall be in him a well of water springing up into
everlasting life.
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water,
that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come
hither.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband.
Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou
now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou
art a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye
say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to
worship.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour
cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at
Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we
worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true
worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in
truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must
worship him in spirit and in truth.
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias
cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will
tell us all things.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled
that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What
seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her
way into the city, and saith to the men,
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever
I did: is not this the Christ?
