ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
India has a population of 1.27 billion plus, and growing. To accommodate rapid urbanization,
the Government of India has allocated US$ 1.2 billion in fiscal year 2014-15 to build 100 new
smart cities, and to develop satellite towns around existing cities. Famously known as
Intelligent or Smart cities (communities, clusters, regions) are defined as multi-layer territorial
systems of innovation that bring together knowledge-intensive activities, institutions for
cooperation in learning and innovation, and digital spaces for communication and interaction
in order to maximize the problem-solving capability of the city. The Interest in the smart
cities has been motivated by major challenges, including climate change, economic
restructuring, the move to online retail and entertainment, ageing populations, and pressures
on public finances. Integration is a key-factor, enabling the above processes to work together
and create environments more efficient in collaborative problem-solving and innovation. The
uses of digital technologies to enhance performance and wellbeing, to reduce costs and
resource consumption, and to engage more effectively and actively with its citizens can be
brought under broad framework of smart cities. It would be a city that should be able to
respond faster to city and global challenges than one with a simple 'transactional' relationship
with its citizens.
The one day conference aims to offer an opportunity to present the contribution on
fundamental and applied research and ideas in developing smart cities across India. It aims to
connect and provide a platform to the government officials, investors, experts and research
students to discuss and exchange ideas, information, project reports, etc.
