Youth
Development
Programme
2015
W ELLINGTON
W ELCOME !
In this information pack you will find all you need to know about the Youth
Development Programme run by Youthline Wellington, and an application form to be
completed by 5pm Friday 24th April 2015.
Who is Youthline? Youthline has been a Counselling Service in Aotearoa New
Zealand for over 40 years. Over 80 people are involved in Youthline Wellington—
mostly trained volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.
Youthline supports all young people in their journey regardless of their religion,
gender, sexuality, or economic status. We support young people with confidential
text, email, and phone counselling. We work closely with other youth services and
provide education on life skills and youth issues in schools and the community.
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PROGRAMME
WHY? To help young people discover more about themselves and gain some key
life skills.
WHO? The Programme is designed for young men and women aged between 15
and 18 years. It will be run by our experienced Youth Workers.
WHERE? We will start off with a camp at Silverstream Retreat in Lower Hutt. The
rest of the Programme will be based in central Wellington at Evolve and at
Youthline’s offices. Evolve is on Level 2 James Smith Building, Corner Cuba &
Manners Streets. Youthline is on Level 3, 148 Cuba St, Wellington.
WHEN? There will be an open Information Evening on Wednesday 22nd April where
parents, caregivers and participants can drop by between 5.30-7.30pm to meet the
facilitators, ask questions and fill out an application form in person.
The Info Evening will be at the Youthline office, Level 3, 148 Cuba St, Wellington.
The Youth Development Programme will start with its first social session on Wed 29th
April, after that we’ll meet at either Evolve on Tuesday (for workshop sessions) or
Youthline on Wednesday (for social sessions) until the Graduation in October 2015.
WHAT? The programme will focus on issues that are important to young people. It
will help to develop confidence, learn about yourself, look at relationships and be role
models to others. As a group you will choose which topics to discuss and Youth
Workers will plan the sessions around your ideas. You also get to choose two
weekend adventure activities such as learning a new skill or going somewhere new.
The Programme provides challenges and opportunities for self-reflection,
communication, increasing job skills, meeting other likeminded people and
developing new friendships. Most importantly, you will get to have input into what we
do during the programme and have fun doing it.
W HAT WILL WE DO ?
We will be using a variety of different methods to run the programme including team
building activities, group work, creative expression, learning from inspiring stories
and interesting guest speakers.
W HO DO I NEED TO WORK WITH ?
The programme will involve working with a team of approximately 15-20 other young
males and females aged 15-18yrs, and three Youth Workers as well as the
Coordinator and Supervisor.
W HO IS RUNNING THIS P ROGRAMME ?
The course will be run by our experienced Youth Workers who have undergone
thorough training around working with young people. There will also be outside guest
speakers with specialist knowledge for some activities. This will give you a chance
to talk to other organisations and link up with other supports in the community.
Several of the youth workers are First Aid trained.
H OW OFTEN DO I NEED TO COME ?
The entire Programme is 13 compulsory fortnightly workshop sessions, 13 optional
(but highly recommended) social fortnightly sessions, 2 weekend day trips, a
weekend Camp in May, a weekend Marae Stay in September and a Graduation in
October.
The full programme runs from 29th April through to 28th October. The first Camp and
Marae stay have compulsory attendance. The minimum attendance will be for 80%
of the workshop sessions, with a strong preference for 100% attendance.
W HAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN I FINISH ?
At the end of the year, after a special graduation ceremony, at which you will receive
a certificate recognising your participation, there will be further opportunities to
become involved in Youthline. For instance, you could join our group of youth reps (a
group that runs youth led projects and acts as an advisory group to Youthline), train
to become a counsellor if you’re over 18 years, or help out as a youth educator in the
community. The Youth Development Programme provides an awesome foundation
for these roles, for further training in youth work, counselling or social work and adds
proven volunteer experience and training to any CV.
W HAT ARE MY RIGHTS AN D RESPONSIBILITIES ?
Both parents/guardians and young people will be required to sign contracts which
outline the responsibilities and rights of all involved.
There will be shared rules for the safety of the programme staff and members.
Participants will be held accountable by staff and the group should there be a break
in the agreed rules of the programme.
H OW DO I GET INTO THE PROGRAM ME ?
There are limited places available for this programme. For 2015, we will be accepting
a maximum of 20 young people. There will be a selection process based on a quick
phone conversation. We aim to select a wide mixture of young people. We strongly
encourage any young person, who fits the age criteria and who can
demonstrate that they are keen, to apply.
H OW MUCH WILL IT COST ? IT’S FREE!
Camp costs will be covered by Youthline Wellington and its generous funders. There
will be several transportation scholarships available in order to make sure people
from the wider Wellington region who can’t afford transportation can attend.
Please note that it is the parent or caregiver’s responsibility to ensure that their
young person has adequate transportation to and from the on-going fortnightly
sessions based in Wellington city
C RITERIA FOR THE Y OUTH D EVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
For this programme we will be selecting young people between the ages of 15-18
years old. We ask that participants are well informed about the programme, what it
involves, and the participant responsibilities and time commitments before applying.
Our aim is to ensure a range of diverse people make up the final group so we are
interested in hearing from individuals from all walks of life; different genders,
ethnicities and identities. We hope participants will commit to Youthline long term,
perhaps taking up positions as phone counsellors or youth workers in the future.
