OLDER AMERICANS MONTH IS COMING
Older Americans Kickoff Ceremony is scheduled for
May 1 at the Reno Center including an Information
Fair and Musical Entertainment by Jeff Wayne. The

SOCIAL SERVICE PROGRAMS AT THE RENO CENTER

Commodity Food – The next USDA commodity food distribution will be THURSDAY, MAY 7, 8:00AM 10:00AM at the Reno Center. Gross monthly income limits are: $1,458.75 (one person) or
$1,966.25 (two people). First Thursday of ODD NUMBERED months.
Emergency Food Pantry – Reno Center, Third Tuesday – APRIL 21 at 9:00AM. Be here at 8:00AM.
Gross monthly income limits are: $1,265/mo. (one person) or $1,705 (two people). Only one set of
bags per household. Limited to the first 300 people. ID and Proof of Income REQUIRED
Food Stamp Workshop – Reno Center, Third Tuesday - APRIL 21 - 8:30 - 10:00AM.
Food Bank Truck (CSFP) – Reno Center inside - Third Thursday, APRIL 16 - 9:00AM - 11:00AM;
Sparks - Second Tuesday, APRIL 14 - 11:45AM - 12:30PM, Sparks Parks & Rec., 98 Richards Wy
Sun Valley - Third Wednesday, APRIL 15 - 9:00 - 10:00AM. Gross income limits are: $1,265 (one

LIHEA (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Programs) – Provides assistance with utility costs.
Gross income limits are: $1,459/mo. (one person), or $1,966/mo. (two people).
A T & T Universal Lifeline – Provides a discount on your telephone bill. Call AT&T 1-866-901-0152
Sewer Bill Rebate – Reno and Sparks programs are both closed for this year.
Washoe Senior Ride – Taxi Subsidy. Purchase a book of $20 worth of Taxi Bucks for $10, with a
maximum of 2 books per month. Program requirements are: age 60+, an RTC Access rider, or a
veteran of any age. Must be a Washoe County resident with household income below $45,000.
Sign up in person at Central Reception in the Reno Center or call 348-0477 for information.
EYE DISEASES / LOW VISION
FIRST TUESDAY OF EACH MONTH - APRIL 7 AND MAY 5 AT 9:30AM IN THE RENO CENTER
LOBBY. Meet with Harold Blethen of Visionscope Institute for information to deal with low vision
and eye diseases. Information is available on nutrition, treatment options, causes and
prevention of eye diseases and the latest technology available to assist you.

“How the Food Bank Helps Seniors”
Guest Speaker : Cherie Jamason, President and CEO of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada
Tuesday, April 14, 10:00AM to 11:00AM, Laxalt Auditorium, (UNR Nelson Building), 401 W. 2nd St, Reno
The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is a regional food distribution center and a support system for more
than 130 partner agencies serving the needy, the elderly, children, and the ill. Please attend our last
Educational Talk for this spring session and learn how the Food Bank can assist seniors on fixed budgets.
Of special interest are the Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry Program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP) benefits, and senior meal programs.
Come early, at 9:00 a.m. and meet fellow volunteers and others over a light breakfast sponsored by
“MorningStar, Senior Living of Sparks” in the kitchen area right next to the Laxalt Auditorium. The Talk
starts right at 10a.m. Note: Want to attend? Pleaseespond by Friday, April 10 to Sina Ward at

REMEMBER — GET YOUR SALAD ORDERS IN EARLY!
Senior Services is working to improve the sign-in process for the nutrition program. As part of
the process improvement the salad reservation deadline has been moved to 9:00AM. You may
sign up on the clipboard in the front lobby up to one week in advance or by phone at 328-2575,
option 2, anytime before 9:00AM that day. Please, if you have ordered a salad in advance and
are not able to make it to the center for lunch, let us know before the deadline.
At this time the system will only accommodate those already in our database; if you are a new
participant please be sure to fill out a blue Client Registration Form before your first salad order
so we can have your information entered into the system
TAXI BUCKS SIGN UP OPPORTUNITIES
In order to better accommodate those of you in outlying areas, we will begin Taxi Bucks sign up
at the Sparks, Sun Valley and Cold Springs centers. Taxi Bucks will be available for sale at $10
each, maximum of 2 books per month. Correct change or personal check.
Cold Springs - Tuesdays, 11:00AM-100PM
Sparks - Thursdays, 9:30-11:30AM
Sun Valley - Monday through Friday, 9:00AM-1:00PM

We have a volunteer willing to teach a personal technology class at the Sparks
Center. Learn how to use computers and tablets, explore the Web.
Class topics can include:

*Find audiobooks and ebooks
*Learn Web safety and privacy *Manage & share your photos
