Do you have a summer camp program and need help providing breakfast and
lunch? Are you located in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Charles or St. John
the Baptist parishes? If so, apply for Summer Feeding 2015 by clicking here:

The Summer Food Service Program ensures that children continue to receive
nutritious meals during summer break. Although millions of children depend on
nutritious free and reduced‐price meals and snacks at school for 9 months out of
the year, just a fraction of them receive the free meals provided by organizations
like Second Harvest during the summer. For more information about Summer

Welcome Newest Members Lafourche Parish:
We are delighted to partner with Reverend Morris Hunter Jr. and the Hope
Center team to bring a food pantry to Galliano for the first time in many
years. The Hope Center will be distributing food to clients on Tuesdays and

Mobile Pantry Serves Bogalusa Families In Need
Come rain or shine, the weather can't stop Second Harvest's Mobile Pantry truck.
Each month, we deliver fresh produce, meat, dairy and other food items to 40
partner locations across south Louisiana. Bravo to all who lent a hand at the
Greater Bogalusa Full Gospel Baptist Church Mobile Pantry last month! New Income Guidelines The Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry just released income
guidelines for all TEFAP distributions between July 1, 2015‐June 30, 2016. Under
the new guidelines, combined gross household income must meet the following
criteria ‐ please update your handbooks, inform your volunteers and plan to
insert into your 10‐file folder system, folder #6, when we post the official memo
in June:

Help Your Clients Get SNAP Benefits Encourage clients who need SNAP application assistance in English or Spanish to
call the Second Harvest Helpline at 1.855.392.9338. The toll‐free hotline is
staffed 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday‐Friday, and it couldn't be more convenient.
Each client's application or recertification is completed right over the phone. If
calling after hours, please leave a message.
Become a Nutrition Educator
Interested in becoming a trained Cooking Matters volunteer? Cooking Matters is
a six‐week cooking, nutrition and food budgeting course that is run by trained
volunteer educators. To become an educator, attend our orientation and training
on Saturday, May 9 from 10:30 a.m.‐1:30 p.m. at Second Harvest's main
warehouse, 700 Edwards Avenue. Please call Kate McDonald at 504.729.2840 to
RSVP. Stamp Out Hunger on Saturday, May 9 South Louisiana's largest food drive of the year is quickly approaching. This year,
Second Harvest is partnering with the post office to distribute brown paper bags
to all households in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard Parishes the week of May
4. Be sure to encourage everyone you know to participate in the Letter Carriers'
Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 9. People can fill any bag with
canned food and leave it by their mailbox. Letter carriers will do the rest.
Donations are also accepted at participating post offices through May 11. Most‐needed items include canned meats, meat‐based soups, canned fruits,
canned vegetables, peanut butter, rice and beans. Volunteers are needed to help

Rubber Duck Derby is May 31 Come one, come all to Big Lake in City Park at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 31 for the
annual Rubber Duck Derby. Be there to witness 25,000 rubber ducks racing to
the finish line for an assortment of prizes, including a first‐place grand prize of
$5,000 cash. All proceeds benefit Second Harvest's children's programs. To adopt
a duck, form a team or learn more, visit https://www.duckrace.com/nola. Our Houma Health Fair is June 6 Attention partners in Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Mary and beyond:
You and your clients are invited to attend a free health fair from 11 a.m.‐2 p.m.
on Saturday, June 6, at Blue Cliff College, 803 Barrow Street, Houma. All participants will be treated to a free yoga class from 10‐11 a.m.; free blood
sugar and blood pressure screenings; $5 haircuts; healthy cooking
demonstrations; free relaxation chair massages; SNAP application assistance;
senior resources; a sports/exercise orientation and a Mobile Pantry free food
giveaway (no pre‐registration required).

incorporate mashed and sliced bananas into their next batch of heart‐healthy
pancakes.
Ingredients: 1 cup all purpose flour
Banana Pancakes (serves 5)
1 cup whole wheat flour
¼ cup brown sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 bananas, mashed
2 eggs
1 ½ cups skim milk
1 tsp vanilla
½ tsp butter
2 bananas, sliced
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Spray a 12‐cup muffin tin with cooking spray and set
aside.1. In a medium bowl, add flour, brown sugar, baking powder, soda, and
salt. Mix thoroughly with a spoon.
2. In another bowl, mix the mashed bananas, eggs, milk, and vanilla. 3. Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture.
Gently stir with a spoon until ingredients
come together but are not uniform. Do not
over mix; there should be pockets of flour.
Let the mixture sit for 10‐15 minutes.
4. Heat a pan on medium heat. Melt a small
amount of butter, about ½ tsp, then ladle
some pancake batter into the center of the
pan. As soon as the batter is in the pan, place 3‐4 banana slices atop the
uncooked side of the pancake. 5. Once the edges of the pancake start to dry up and you can see the middle start
to bubble, flip the pancake over. Cook until it is browned on both sides. Serve
with peanut butter, fruit, yogurt, or small amount of syrup.
Notice About Egg Donations From Walmart
Based on information obtained from the USDA, Walmart is afraid that stores
donating cartons of eggs containing broken product are in violation of USDA
guidelines. At first, Walmart decided to shut down all egg donations until these
concerns are resolved. However, Online Marketplace's Susan Goss has learned
that Walmart will soon instruct stores to return to donating eggs that have
reached their "sell‐by date" as long as the carton does not contain and has never
contained broken eggs. At this point, Walmart has no plans to donate eggs/cartons exposed to broken
eggs unless the USDA clarifies donation procedures. Feeding America also is

reaching out to the USDA to resolve this issue. Other retail stores are continuing
to donate eggs. Second Harvest will be sure to share more information with
agencies as it becomes available.
Emergency Food Locator
Please take a minute to verify your agency's information is correct on the
Emergency Food Locator web site. Click here to check your agency name, address
and hours of operation: http://no‐hunger.org/emergency‐food‐locator. This website is heavily used by the Second Harvest Helpline, community
members, and 211‐style referral services across our region. It is imperative that
we maintain accurate opening days, times, contact telephone numbers, and
locations. It may affect someone who needs emergency food. Call your Second
Harvest Agency Relations Coordinator with corrections.
Harvest Wholesale
Harvest Wholesale allows agencies to purchase grocery products directly from
Second Harvest at a 25% "on average" discount compared to grocery and big‐box
stores. You can now order Harvest Wholesale items through Agency Express with
no additional fees. Just pay for what you order and no need to sign up. In
addition, we'll offer payment terms of Net30 (you will have 30 days from date of
invoice to pay invoice) on all Harvest Wholesale orders.
