Parent Interviews
Good communication between school and home is
essential in understanding what students have achieved,
goal setting and monitoring progress. Although parents
are invited to meet with teachers at any time, parent/
teacher interviews create the opportunity to discuss
many aspects of the student’s learning in detail. It is
great to see that many parents are making appointments
to do this before the end of term and we hope that 100%
of families take up this opportunity. Please see the notes
relating to the online booking system in this newsletter.
SAPSASA Softball News
Congratulations to Abbey Mills, Eboni Turner & Jordan
Lewis on a great week representing Central Eyre
Peninsula in Adelaide at SAPSASA Softball. The team
finished 3rd overall which is an outstanding achievement
considering Abbey was the only team member having
played before.
Wellbeing
Each week in the newsletter we will publish information
and/or resources about wellbeing. These may be of
interest to both school and the wider community. If you
have ideas for this section, please let us know.

WHITE CARD TRAINING
On Tuesday 24th March, six year 11 students went to Edward John
Eyre High School in Whyalla, to participate in a full day training course
in Workplace Health and Safety. On the completion of the training all
were successful in achieving the industry qualification of the ‘White
Card’
As a member of the leadership team here at Cowell Area School, it
was gratifying to hear the Industry trainer and members of EJEHS
staff comment on our students commendable behaviour whilst
participating in the course and accessing the school’s amenities
throughout the day.
Congratulations to those students on their achievement

Learn a Brass or Woodwind Instrument
An opportunity has arisen for students to learn either a Brass or a
Woodwind Instrument via the videoconferencing facilities at Cleve &
Cowell Area Schools in 2015 with Mrs Anna Davidson from Kimba
Area School.
Lessons are offered on Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet and
Trombone to students in Year 5 and above. Students will attend a ½
hour lesson once a week grouped according to ability / experience
and/or instrument. These lessons will occur at the same time each
week. Once or twice a term Anna will come to visit students and
have a face-to-face lesson. Students are expected to develop a
routine of home practice to reinforce skills learnt.
Students can choose to hire or buy instruments as appropriate. The
school hires its’ own instruments or, if they are not available from
within our resources, from Musicorp in Adelaide. Prices for 2015 are
as follows:
 Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone: $219/year
 Alto Saxophones: $360/year
Learning an instrument has so many scientifically proven benefits to
children and adults, particularly development of fine motor skills,
aural awareness, memory and literacy and numeracy skills.
Interest in this innovative music programme can be registered by
contacting the front office staff for further details.

Library Closure

And Fire Falls
By Peter Watt
It is 1942 and the war in the Pacific is on Australia's
doorstep, changing the lives of the Duffy and Macintosh
families as never before. In Sydney, siblings Donald
and Sarah Macintosh battle for their father's approval,
and control of his empire, while their cousin David fights
the enemy across the continents.
US Marine Pilot James Duffy defies his grandfather's wishes, and, a
number of times, death, protecting Australian skies from the Japanese.
Below, trapped in the jungles of Malaya, Diane Duffy is caught between
saving the lives of hundreds of orphaned children, or that of her son.
While Tom Duffy finds himself enlisting in yet another world war, his
daughter Jessica narrowly escapes slaughter at a mission station,
causing her to revoke her vows and follow in her father's footsteps.
Nearly a century after the Aboriginal curse that forever tied these two
families, and amidst the most devastating conflict in history, the Duffys
and Macintoshes will find a way to endure...and perhaps even thrive.
