Estimation of body mass distribution from person
Bachelor/Master thesis:
Estimation of body mass distribution from person scans
In the new research group wearHEALTH, we want to precisely estimate human dynamics from bodyworn inertial measurement units (IMUs). As basis for this, we need to know the mass distribution of
the different body segments. There are several methods for obtaining such information, e.g. via
anthropometric databases, geometric modelling or regression models. Another option is to extract
such information from visual person scans.
Suggested task:
• Research different approaches for estimating segment mass distribution
• Develop and implement a method for extracting data from 3D person scans
• Evaluate the method on different person scans and compare the results with other approaches
Requirements:
• Basic knowledge in 3D Computer Vision and Point Cloud Processing
• Implementation skills in e.g. Matlab, Octave or C++

This thesis will be performed in the new research group wearHEALTH (Department of Computer
Science, Technical University Kaiserslautern) in close collaboration with the Department Augmented
Vision at DFKI, lead by Prof. Didier Stricker (http://av.dfki.de/en/). You will be supervised by a postdoc
from our lab, who also has access to the person scanning technology at DFKI.
