Call 781-641-2942 for more details. ____________________________________________________________________________ Time to Sign Up for the Dial-A-Ride Taxi Program The Dial-A-Ride Taxi (DART) program year starts July 1, 2015, and runs through June 30, 2016. DART is partially funded through a federal grant and a grant from the Town of Arlington and is managed by the Council on Aging. Membership renewal is required each fiscal year. Participants must be 60 years or older and be an Arlington residents to participate. Proof of age is required at the time of registration. Your current lavender-colored DART tickets will expire June 30, 2015. This program augments the general transportation program of the COA by providing easily accessible rides 6 days a week for any senior who needs transportation around Arlington. You must purchase a new DART membership card for $20 to participate in the program. Registration begins July 1. The $5 cost of individual tickets for this valuable service ensures rides throughout Arlington 6 days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants may purchase up to ten tickets per month. The Council on Aging also subsidizes the program to help maintain the stability of this great 6-day per week transportation option for Town seniors. Send in those renewals as soon as you can. If you are not already a member, it is time to join. Your membership dues and additional contributions support the educational, recreational, and social programs that are offered by the ASA to the Town’s seniors in the Arlington Senior Center. COA & ASA NEWS AND EVENTS LGBTQ Senior Movie Night at the Robbins Library: Wednesday, June 3, 6:30 p.m., Fried Green Tomatoes. Free. The Arlington Robbins Library LGBTQ group and the COA’s senior LGBT group join together in our first collaborative event. The film is based on the novel by Fannie Flagg, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, set in the American South in the 80’s with flashbacks to the Depression era. The standout cast includes Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary-Louise Parker, and Mary Stuart Masterson. The library has a wonderful, involved LGBTQ group, so please come! COA Beginners Country-Western Line Dancing: Thursdays, starting June 4, 6:30-7:25 p.m. Cost: $50/4 weeks. Come alone or with a partner for this fun dance class. Young and old, men and women, everyone can have a great time. Get low impact exercise, while enjoying the country western music and steps. COA/Arlington Community Education Silent Films with Piano Accompaniment: Thursday, June 4 at 1:00 p.m. Richard Hughes presents some of the greatest films from the silent era with old-style piano accompaniment. Take a trip down memory lane with films from the 1910s and 1920s. Cost: $4.00. ASA Movies: Friday, June 5, 1:00 p.m. A Most Wanted Man with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Willem Dafoe, Rachel McAdams. A hard-drinking German spy tracks a Chechen immigrant who may or may not be involved in a terrorist conspiracy. ASA Sing-Along with Anne and Larry, Tuesday, June 9, 1:00 p.m. summertime, and the living is easy. 1st floor. ASA Bringing Memories to Life: Using iPads to Explore Your Past.: Thursday, June 11, 10:30noon, Cost: Free. Location: Mural Room. Ottoson Middle School students invite you to the Senior Center to learn to use iPads for fun. Think about three areas of your past to research, a favorite song from high school, TV show, or news article from when you served in the military. Middle school students show you how to research them using YouTube, Google, and other apps. No experience necessary, nor iPads. Call 781-316-3400 to register. COA June is National Safety Month: The National Safety Council (NSC) reminds us this month we can work together to keep each other safe wherever we are. This year the NSC is focusing on the issues of prescription painkiller abuse, transportation safety, ergonomics, emergency preparedness and slips, trips, and falls. See the NSC website for more information at www.nsc.org. Thursday, June 11, 1:00-2:00 p.m. To address the NSC focus on falls, COA is offering Fall Prevention Tips with Tai Chi. Free. On Elder Abuse Awareness Day the Arlington Elder Abuse Task Force ceremony honors our first Hall-of-Fame inductees, who advocated for elders they were concerned about in Arlington this year. Area politicians are invited, including Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Senator Kenneth Donnelly to pay tribute to those standing up to elder abuse and neglect in our community. Refreshments will be served. Please join us to celebrate! COA Movies: Thursday, June 18, 1:00 p.m. The Rewrite with Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei. A washed-up screenwriter reluctantly takes a teaching job at a small university in upstate New York. ASA Book Club Friday, June 19, 1:00 p.m. This month’s selection is The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. The morose owner of a small bookstore on Alice Island (Martha’s Vineyard) finds his life and the fortunes of his store changed for the better when he takes in an abandoned toddler. ASA Richard Clark presents two to Tango. Monday, June 22 at 1:00 p.m. Cost $4.00. Back by popular demand, Richard Clark and Lynne McKenney Lydick regale us with scenes from The Lion in Winter and Visitor from New York. Day Trip: Tuesday, July 7 10:00-2:00 Museum of Fine Arts to see the works of Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849, the first Japanese artist to be internationally recognized who continues to inspire artists around the world.
