Summary Sheet
Cameron Leader-Picone, English, received a 2015 NEH Summer Stipend award
for his project titled “Rearticulating Race in Twenty-First Century African
American Literature.” Leader-Picone is one of two people in Kansas to receive
an award from the NEH this spring.
Li Yang, Modern Languages, drafted a version of an online textbook on Chinese
pragmatics has gone live online (http://www.k-state.edu/chinesepragmatics),
which will be available to anyone who might be interested in learning about
Chinese pragmatics in the university community after it is finalized. Grounded in
the cognitive approaches to SLA and prior empirical research, the online
textbook provides students with explicit instruction on appropriate communication
in Chinese, various awareness-raising exercises/activities, and rich multimedia
resources (e.g., videos, images, etc.).
Bailey, H, Psychological Sciences, et al, (in press) APOE ε4 genotype status
predicts everyday memory. Aging, Neuropsychology, and Cognition.
John Tomich, Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, was inducted as
member of National Academy of Inventors.
Physics associate professor Dr. Kristan Corwin was quoted in an article entitled
“Looking back/Looking forward: Gas lasers: Durable survivors evolve new
forms" for LaserFocusWorld (http://www.laserfocusworld.com).
The article discusses the past, present and future prospects of gas lasers.
Kristan commented on using gas-filled hollow-core fibers as a laser medium.
An excerpt is below:
The concept grew from earlier studies of optical pumping and the use of
gas-filled hollow fibers as optical frequency references, says Kristan
Corwin of Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS). She, Brian
Washburn of Kansas State, and Wolfgang Rudolph of the University of
New Mexico (Albuquerque) led the team that demonstrated the first
hollow-core fiber gas laser, exciting 3 µm lasing from acetylene (C2H2)
with 1.5 µm pulses.1
"It's fun to have a new laser system to play around with," says Corwin.
"Gain was so high in acetylene that we could observe lasing, despite the
fiber's loss of 20 decibels/meter at 3 micron." Then Fetah Benabid, now

at the Xlim Research Institute at the University of Limoges (France)
developed the hypocycloid core fiber (see Fig. 5), which reduces loss at
3 µm by keeping most of the light in the gas.

Physics undergraduate, Joshua Nelson (advisor: Carlos Trallero) has been
selected as a Goldwater scholar for 2015. K-State has not yet made an official
announcement yet, but the Goldwater site lists Josh at

Thanks to a collaborative application initiated by Don Hedrick, Kansas State
University has been selected as the host site in Kansas for “First Folio! The Book
that Gave Us Shakespeare,” a national traveling exhibition of the Shakespeare
First Folio, one of the world’s most treasured books. The Folger Shakespeare
Library, in partnership with the Cincinnati Museum Center and the American
Library Association, is touring a First Folio of Shakespeare in 2016 to all 50
states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Karin Westman completed the 2014-2015 Wellesley Institute for Women in
Higher Education. The Institute provided four three-day sessions during the
academic year where participants share an intense, interactive curriculum
designed to provide the knowledge, skills, and perspectives for advancing as
leaders across all institution types.

meeting on March 19th.

Christopher E. Renner, K-State instructor of Italian, chaired a panel exploring
the relationship between food studies and Italian studies, and presented a paper
as part of that panel, entitled “Italia in Bocca: The History and Culture of Food in
Italy,” at the 2015 American Association of Italian Studies Conference at the
University of Colorado, Boulder, March 26 - 29.

Other:
Kumiko Nakamura, with two of her students from Japanese 6, attended the 29th
annual Japanese language speech contest at Consulate General of Japan at
Chicago on March 21, 2015. Tori Matta and Weiyuan Xu delivered their speech
flawlessly and received awards, respectively.
She also met with a group of gifted student facilitators at Manhattan High School
to discuss opportunities for their students to start Japanese language study
before college. Kumiko explained the proficiency development of language
learning and how critical to start learning difficult languages earlier. She also
shared the information provided by Japan Foundation on Japanese language
education advocacy program, summer study abroad program in Japan for high
school students, online materials available for self-study as well as the Japanese
language courses offered at K-State.

Cora Cooper performed Spohr, Duo in D major Op. 67 No. 2 with guest artist

by MTD and an Academic Excellence Grant in All Faiths Chapel.
Julie L. Pentz presented Building Family Relations & Enhancing Childhood
Development through Tap Dance, T3 Tap To Togetherness, at the Kansas
Parents as Teachers Association Conference.

Patricia Thompson was Alto soloist on Handel’s Messiah with the St. Louis
Bach Society, St. Louis, MO. She also performed with the Spire Chamber
Ensemble, Monteverdi Vespers of 1610. Concerts presented at Church of the
Visitation, Kansas City, MO, March 21, 2015 and Grace Episcopal Cathedral,
Topeka, KS, March 22, 2015.

Sally Bailey gave a guest presentation titled “Dramatizing Research through
Ethnotheatre” in EDCEP 938 Advanced Data Analysis in Qualitative Methods
and gave a guest presentation on “Creative Group Trust and Cohesion” in SOWK
570 Social Work in Groups.
Jerry Jay Cranford organized a week professional development trip for K-State
Theatre majors to Los Angeles including backstage access to Disneyland’s major
performance venue and talkbacks with members of the stage management
teams (joined by advisory council member, Harry Watts and his wife) , a tour of
the Disney Burbank Studios (we held one of Walt Disney’s academy awards),
two new plays with an impromptu talkback with the playwright, a trip to the Getty
museum and a networking event in the Hollywood Hills at a friend’s home that
had been the home of Rudolph Valentino (we also attended a day of taping on
the MODERN FAMILY set with Eric Stonestreet which was the impetus for
scheduling this trip). Cranford also Directed/Choreographed three dance
numbers for Sara Stoulil’s senior recital Musical staging for the Heartland Men’s
Chorus Spring Concert, MODERN FAMILIES.

Amy Rosine served as the Music Director for the Music Man at the Columbian
Theatre in Wamego. This production ran from Jan 5- March 8. She aided in
casting the show, rehearsing the singers and pit musicians (some performers
were from K-State), and conducted six performances of the show. Dr. Rosine
also Recorded music for the Sorores Duo at Tempest Studios in Tempe, Arizona.
The music on the recording consisted of chamber pieces for soprano and clarinet
that included selections from a Holocaust program and two other twentieth
century works.

From Brad Logan: This month word was received that the National Park
Service (NPS) had listed the Young Buck site on the National Register of Historic
Places. The site, located on Wildcat Creek in Manhattan and occupied during
the Woodland (AD 1-1000) and Late Prehistoric (AD 1000-1500) periods, was
investigated by the Kansas Archaeological Field School-2104, a KSU research
and educational program. Investigations at the site in 2012-2013 were supported
by grants to the university from the Historic Preservation Fund awarded by the
NPS through the Kansas Historical Society.
Gerad Middendorf was recently invited to join the Social Science Editorial
Advisory Panel for the journal Nature Plants, a journal from Nature Publishing
Group.
