West Rhyl Young People’s Project Job Description Designation: Trans Youth & Community Development Worker – Wrexham Salary: £20,269 to £23,213 pro qualifications and experience) Reports to: Project Manager – West Rhyl Young People’s Project (WRYPP) Accountable to: WRYPP Project Manager, WRYPP Management Committee, Wrexham County Borough Council Project Management Team Relationships with: rata (depending upon Viva LGBT Youth Team, Wrexham Trans Youth Support Advisory Group, local schools & colleges, WCBC Youth Service, CAMHS, LSB members, local Trans community groups, parents and carers. Hours: 30 hours per week, this will include some weekend and evening duties Contract: Fixed term contract funded until 31st March 2016 Job Purpose In partnership with existing local/regional youth work providers, to undertake Trans youth engagement work; including one to one support and group work. To establish Trans specialist youth work spaces and activities which facilitate self-exploration, self-expression and affirmation; nurturing positive identities and promoting wellbeing and resilience. To contribute to the development and delivery of schools-based awareness raising, equality & inclusion workshops in conjunction with Viva LGBT Youth colleagues – to add breadth to existing programmes of work and to increase their availability to more schools in the area. WRYPP Page 1 West Rhyl Young People’s Project To develop new and strengthen existing links with local community groups; supporting them and enhancing their capacity through training and skills development. To establish a pool of knowledgeable and confident community activists to engage in the advisory and scrutiny group/s, volunteer as peer and community mentors and support the future sustainability of emerging projects. To work in partnership with other agencies and local providers, to deliver wrap-around support for Trans young people and their families; offering multiple ‘entry points’ to the provision to ensure the young person can access the appropriate type and level of support according to need, personal circumstances and comfort levels. To work closely with families, parents and carers of Trans young people along with children of Trans parents - to establish a supportive peer network or group – to offer mutual support and information exchange. To develop new and strengthen existing links with healthcare providers with a particular emphasis on the emotional and mental wellbeing of Trans and gender variant young people – bridging the gaps (including knowledge and capacity) between schools-based counselling provision, Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services and the Adult services. To engage with local mental health services to develop consistent interventions spanning the periods of transition across age-restricted services, where young [Trans and gender variant] people can often fall through the gaps and can become particularly vulnerable. This will include enhancing existing provision through training and upskilling service providers. To work alongside stakeholders to plan, develop and seek resources for interim counselling services to support Trans young people during the period prior to Adult Mental Health Services becoming available to them. WRYPP Page 2 West Rhyl Young People’s Project Vision & Context A new addition to the Viva LGBT Youth provision for North Wales, the purpose of Wrexham Trans Youth Support is to develop a citizen-led multi-agency approach to tackling health inequalities faced by Trans and gender variant young people. The project will focus on the Wrexham area, building upon an emerging network of Trans community members and statutory and third sector agencies – originally brought together during a 2014 conference on antihomophobic and transphobic bullying, funded through the Welsh Government Regional Community Cohesion Co-ordinators and hosted by Wrexham County Borough Council. The project draws upon and enhances existing networks; engaging with Trans young people and community members to establish new frameworks of support and citizen involvement. This project will provide a foundation for the long term engagement and retention of Trans community leaders and activists. The skills, knowledge and experience of the community will be key to the effectiveness of the scheme and will be central to the information exchange and advisory elements of the project; supporting the improvement of public services vital to the wellbeing of Trans and gender variant young people (and the Trans community as whole). Involvement of and ownership by Trans community members will ensure that networks and practices established will become self-sustaining at the end of the scheme. Management & Accountability The Wrexham Trans Youth & Community Worker is an employee of West Rhyl Young People’s Project and managed by the charity’s Project Manager. Lines of accountability are as follows: The WRYPP Project Manager will provide day-to-day line management and direction for the Trans Youth & Community Development Worker Problems/concerns will be reported to the WRYPP Project Manager in the first instance, discussed at the advisory group where necessary and WRYPP Page 3 West Rhyl Young People’s Project escalated by the WRYPP Project Manager to the WCBC Community Diversity Manager, as specified in the Partnership Agreement. The Trans Youth & Community Development Worker will collate and analyse monitoring and evaluation data to provide timely reports at agreed intervals to the Project Manager, WRYPP Management Committee, the WCBC Community Diversity Manager and to the funders. The advisory group is responsible for providing guidance and direction to the work; e.g. by information sharing, identifying potential partner organisations/participants, providing oversight for training programmes etc. The Youth & Community Development worker will present monthly update reports at the advisory group meeting. You will be expected to engage fully in regular supervision sessions with the Project Manager, during which you will be required reflect on your own practice and to assist in the identification your own training needs and in seeking out opportunities for professional development. Regular team meetings and supervision will provide opportunities for you to develop and maintain work plans. Location The project will be focused on Wrexham County Borough and you will be required to work at various locations throughout the county. Hot desk arrangements are in place in the WCBC offices at The Contact Centre, 16 Lord Street, Wrexham LL11 1LG and at the Info Shop, Lambpit Street, Wrexham LL11 1AR. From time to time you will also be required to attend meetings and events outside of the county. Travel costs will be met for necessary journeys commenced from either of the hot desk locations. WRYPP Page 4 West Rhyl Young People’s Project Supporting the Development of Service Provision You are responsible for co-operating with and supporting the design, delivery, monitoring and development of the project. This includes maintaining effective records to meet the funder’s and the project’s needs. You are expected to contribute to the evaluation of the project and assist with the ongoing research and development of the service with co-workers and young people. Administration, Finance and Policy You will be instructed by and report to the Project Manager and Management Committee of West Rhyl Young People’s Project who, in turn, will report to WCBC and Public Health Wales. You will undertake day to day administration (including record keeping and communication by phone and in writing); necessary to ensure the smooth running of the programme of activities, services and facilities. You will ensure that in fulfilling the main tasks, the procedures and practices adopted comply with the policies of West Rhyl Young People’s Project in particular those regarding Health and Safety, Confidentiality, Child Protection, Equality & Diversity and Finance. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that staff and young people are aware of their responsibilities in this respect. Terms and Conditions 1. The salary range for the position is between £20,269 and £23,213 pro rata. 2. The appointment is subject to satisfactory references, Disclosure & Barring Service clearance and satisfactory completion of a six month probationary period. 3. The work will involve evening, weekend and out of term commitments; the successful candidate being required to work 8 sessions per week (30 hours a week) with a maximum 8 evening sessions a fortnight. 4. The annual leave entitlement is 30 days pro rata (35 days after 5 years continuous employment), plus Bank Holidays (pro rata). The appointment will be terminable on either side by giving one month’s notice in writing.
