Vision & Context
A new addition to the Viva LGBT Youth provision for North Wales, the purpose
of Wrexham Trans Youth Support is to develop a citizen-led multi-agency
approach to tackling health inequalities faced by Trans and gender variant
young people. The project will focus on the Wrexham area, building upon an
emerging network of Trans community members and statutory and third sector
agencies – originally brought together during a 2014 conference on antihomophobic and transphobic bullying, funded through the Welsh Government
Regional Community Cohesion Co-ordinators and hosted by Wrexham County
Borough Council.
The project draws upon and enhances existing networks; engaging with Trans
young people and community members to establish new frameworks of
support and citizen involvement.
This project will provide a foundation for the long term engagement and
retention of Trans community leaders and activists. The skills, knowledge and
experience of the community will be key to the effectiveness of the scheme and
will be central to the information exchange and advisory elements of the
project; supporting the improvement of public services vital to the wellbeing of
Trans and gender variant young people (and the Trans community as whole).
Involvement of and ownership by Trans community members will ensure that
networks and practices established will become self-sustaining at the end of the
scheme.
All staff are responsible for ensuring that equality of opportunity, in all its
dimensions, is actively addressed and that pro-active approaches are adopted
in all tasks undertaken in line with the charity’s Equal Opportunities policy.
