Anniversaries like these would not have been possible without generous gifts from friends like you: friends who made capital contributions to build barns and improve competition footing; donors who supported internationally acclaimed exhibitions in the International Museum of the Horse; and fun-loving individuals who danced at our galas, jumped the cross country course at our schooling days, and drove through miles of holiday lights – all in the name of supporting the Kentucky Horse Park. We are celebrating 2013 by offering more ways for you to have fun with us at the park, including the debut of two new fundraising events: 1) Ride the Park on the Road to the Horse – a two day trail ride throughout the park which will be held on March 13 and 14, 2013. 2) KHPF Battle in the Saddle Celebrity Team Penning - a raucously fun event on Saturday, July 13, in which teams of riders will compete to see who can pen a group of cattle in the quickest time. The historic event was a great success for both the athletes that participated and the audience that enjoyed the festivities. In conjunction with this year’s show, a new exhibition, The National Horse Show: Glamour and Sport premiered at the International Museum of the Horse, displaying the National’s collection of trophies and high-lights over the last 128 years. Guests were treated to an opening reception and a personal welcome by John Nicholson, Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Park. The Alltech National Horse Show itself included an array of hunter, jumper and equitation divisions, along with the Maclay National Championships. This year, we were excited to welcome the thrilling $50,000 Alltech Puissance, and several American Saddlebred classes back to the prestigious show. The Alltech Arena continues to be praised for its exceptional facilities, and competitors and spectators alike look forward to the 2013 event. ◆ Cross-Country Schooling Set For Spring Southern Lights Another Banner Year! Kentucky Horse Park Celebrates 35 Years! End of Year Parade 1982 T Undated aerial postcard of the park he Kentucky Horse Park has arguably emerged as the world’s leading equestrian destination. Host to Olympic athletes, home to champion horses, and destination for tourists from around the globe, the Kentucky Horse Park has made an undeniable mark on the equine world. As the park celebrates its 35th Anniversary in 2013, we look back on the history of the park and the dedication of its supporters that have allowed it to blossom into the booming equestrian venue it is today. The Kentucky Horse Park first came to fruition after local horseman John R. Gaines proposed the idea of the state creating a Thoroughbred horse park near Lexington to provide a hands-on working horse farm experience. In 1971, the Commonwealth of Kentucky purchased 963 acres of Walnut Hall stud farm for 2.7 million dollars on which to locate the park, thus continuing the legacy of this piece of land that has been inhabited by horses for over 200 years. Ground was formally broken to build the Kentucky Horse Park in October of 1974. In 1978, the park opened its doors, introducing the Kentucky Horse Park to the world, not only as a tourist destination, but also home to the 1978 World Three-Day Event Championships, which would ultimately become the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event-the only four-star three day event held in the Americas to this day. The park continued to flourish in the 1980’s with the building of several stabling barns, rings and a covered arena along with the creation of the Hall of Champions. In 1985, nationally prominent horsewoman Nina Bonnie spearheaded the creation of the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation-a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to enhancing, expanding and improving the park. Since its inception, the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation has raised over 25 million dollars from the private sector in support of the park. Private donations have helped purchase horses and equipment, provide for landscaping needs, improve footing and build Nina Bonnie Endowment Fund The Nina Bonnie Endowment Fund has been created to provide perpetual support to the Kentucky Horse Park. Your donation to this permanent endowment fund will help us maintain the park’s facilities and secure its financial security for generations to come. To ensure that your children and grandchildren are able to enjoy everything the park has to offer, essential structures throughout the park. The growth and progress of the park was recognized most publicly when it was named the site of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. This development required the addition of a new outdoor stadium and a state of the art indoor arena, built by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and the addition of a climate controlled barn complex, funded by private support through the foundation. During the 16 days of competition, hundreds of thousands of individuals from around the world visited the park, some for the very first time, and the park’s place in equine history was secured. Today the Kentucky Horse Park is please consider making a gift to the Nina Bonnie Endowment Fund in celebration of the park’s 35th anniversary! Nearly 1,000,000 people visit the park each year. The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation remains grateful to the park’s earliest founders, its tireless leaders, and its loyal supporters that have played a role in the Kentucky Horse Park’s history. As we look to the next 35 years, the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation remains committed to preserving the legacy of the park and building on the park’s excellence for future generations. ◆ 1978 World Three-Day Event Championships S Volunteer Spotlight - Skip & Judy Johnson kip & Judy Johnson moved to Lexington in 1979 from Hot Springs, AR and were thrilled to find a whole park dedicated to the horse. “Over the years I brought my own children, as well as family members and friends, and visited every chance I had,” states Judy. Upon their retirement, the couple became involved in the volunteer program at the park. They have worked in a great variety of capacities, including assisting with projects in the museum, show hosting and volunteering during major events, such as the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event and the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Skip’s handy-work is evident in the museum, where he restored a large picture frame, which he describes as among “the most fun” of his projects to date. Often, he can also be spotted photographing events at the park. On any given day, Judy can be found greeting guests and helping visitors map out their day. The couple’s hands-on approach to volunteering at the park has proved invaluable. Candace News from the Champions’ Circle Society Planned giving just got easier! As part of the “fiscal cliff” deal, Congress recently passed the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, thus reinstating the IRA Charitable Rollover that had expired at the end of 2011. The opportunity, reserved for individuals aged 70 ½ or older, allows donors to move any amount up to $100,000, from their individual retirement Rose, Volunteer & Outreach Manager, shares, “Skip is an excellent photographer and Judy accounts directly to qualified charities (such as the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation) without having to pay income taxes on the money. The transfer, if done properly, counts toward the taxpayer’s required minimum distribution for the year. The gift must be made directly from the IRA to the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation. Donors may ask their IRA custodian for special forms to make this request. This provision not only gained enthusiastic support always has great ideas on how to improve the volunteer experience. I appreciate their commitment to the KHP and to the development of the volunteer department.” The Johnsons’ commitment and love of the park is evident through their hard work and dedication. Judy sums up her admiration of the park as “a place horses are to be seen, touched, ridden, and appreciated in art and performance. It is a natural setting where horses live, play, and work. What better place is there?” ◆ from non-profit organizations across the nation, but also was supported by both parties in Congress. Ever since the law expired at the close of 2011, individuals and organizations alike have voiced their support for the reinstatement of this measure. The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation formed the Champions’ Circle Society to recognize those individuals who have informed the foundation of their intentions to make a planned gift, and this includes making an IRA Charitable Rollover. The foundation is eager to recognize those individuals contributing to the long-term viability of the Kentucky Horse Park through planned gifts, and we welcome the opportunity to speak with you further. For more information about the IRA Charitable Rollover, planned giving, or joining the Champions’ Circle Society, please contact the foundation office at 859-255-5727 or visit us on the web at www. khpfoundation.org. ◆ Dynamic Duo Hall of Champions Welcomes New Inductee The Division of Horse Drawn Tours has welcomed two new team members to the barn: Paton’s CJ Supreme (“Jace”) and Paton’s Stylemaster’s Kontender (“Connor”). Both Jace and Connor represent the Belgian breed beautifully. They each stand 18 hands high and will turn 3 years old in May. Currently Jace and Connor help draw trolley tours around the park. Andy Not many horses can boast that they have their own day, but one new member of the Hall of Champions can. Won the West was welcomed to the Kentucky Horse Park on October 6, 2012, with Lexington’s Mayor, Jim Gray declaring the date, “Won the West Day.” “He has quite a big fan base, and it’s no surprise based on what a tough and exciting pacer he was,” says Wes Lanter, manager of the Hall of Champions. The nine year old gelding’s career includes being a Two-Time Divisional and Breeders Crown Champion in Standardbred racing, with lifetime earnings of $3,939,836. He is on loan to the park from James Koehler, the Kantzer family and William Robinson. We are proud to welcome Won the West to the KHP family! ◆ ???? This spring, thousands of Kentucky first and fourth graders will be treated once again to a book of their own and live equine performances hosted at the park through the 2013 Kentucky Horse Park Literacy Program. This year’s shows are scheduled for April 9 and 16. If you are interested in volunteering to help this program, please contact Candace Rose at candace.rose@ky.gov or call 859-259-4267. The KHP Literacy Program is 100% funded through private support, and donations to the program are gladly accepted. Contact the Foundation office to learn more. ◆ Kentucky Horse Park Foundation Donation Form Freitag, Director of Driving, states, “They absolutely love attention and are quite curious to their surroundings when out in the park- however both are very well behaved for being such young horses.” The purchase of this beautiful pair of horses was made possible by Harold & Ava Perdue and Tim & Patty Tripp. We are grateful to the Perdues and Tripps for bringing Jace and Connor to the park! ◆ Use this form or save a stamp and donate online at www.khpfoundation.org Enclosed is my gift for $ Please charge my gift of $______ to the following credit card Name q Address Card #: City/State/Zip Exp.
