BLESSINGS FROM BARNHARDT 24 East in Stewartsville, VA Volume XXXV Issue 6 June 1, 2015 A Note From The Pastor “My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: for they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. Proverbs 1:8-9 COMING SOON A godly father is a God-given heritage for any family. I thank the Lord that I had a God-fearing dad. My father had the physical strength and a strength of character that brought an assurance to my heart that he would always be there for us. Dad loved mom and we knew it. Unlike many “proper” families they showed a modest love with a kiss or a hug every so often in front of us. They never argued in front of us, when I was growing up, and they never complained about problems in the church. If money was tight, we never knew it. And even when danger loomed, they watched over us and kept us from the fear of uncertainty. That gave us a stability that many children did not have. One day, I was about 9 or 10 years old. When we were living in Richmond, Virginia; a couple, came by to ask directions and for some money. Dad noticed them, and told mom about it. He let them in, and mom offered them something to drink. Dad went next door to the church thru the parsonage back door. I was coming to the house from the backyard and met mom as she was leaving the house. She said something, but it was a whisper. I barged into the living room. That couple brought up some small talk and quickly left. I found out later, Dad had recognized that they were on the 10 Most Wanted list by the FBI and he went to the church to call the police. Later, he called a member who was a policeman, Officer Ed Montgomery, for an official report of the incident. To alarm the children would have been dangerous. It took our Heavenly Father along with a father’s love to watch over and protect our family that day. But the greatest thing that dad brought me was a spiritual heritage that continues today. Finally, I will leave you with one poem, probably most often quoted by my father while he was pastor here at Barnhardt. It has become our legacy: Think of it prayerfully. Study it carefully; Deep in thy heart let it’s oracles dwell Ponder it’s mystery, Slight not it’s history— None can e’er love it too fondly or well.
