BDCHS Summer/Fall Dual Enrollment for New Students 3-4-15 Essential questions What is dual enrollment? How do I apply? What classes should I take? How do I make sense of college courses and search for classes? How do I get textbooks? Dual enrollment A program where a high school student may take classes at Hillsborough Community College (HCC) College and high school credit may be earned A student does not pay for tuition or textbooks Classes only last one semester and students register on a semester by semester basis BDCHS transportation is available at certain times A student must have at least a 3.0 unweighted (state) GPA at the time of application AP or dual enrollment? Instead of discussing which is better, one should think about which is better for a certain student If uncertain, a student may try both and then make the decision AP Dual Enrollment College-level courses College courses Class size: ~15-25 Class size: may be >200 Potential for college credit (dependent on AP exam and future college) College credit earned for passing a course At high school campus At college campus No potential for earning an A.A. Degree Potential to earn an A.A. Degree Grade only shows on H.S. transcript Grade shows on H.S. and college transcripts No transportation needed Potential for transportation With high school students With college students Only working with one school Must work with two schools Access to classes the H.S. offers Access to classes HCC offers Being a “college student” It’s on YOU! Privacy rights o We cannot contact teachers on your behalf o Family members may not contact HCC on your behalf (unless waiver signed) Scheduling conflicts do happen and YOU need to work through them o Exams (finals, AP, PSAT, etc.), holidays, etc. o Communicate with your professor early Difficulties may arise as students work through operational and academic issues at HCC o Students must be prepared to work through such issues Words of advice This is the beginning of your college career o HCC classes go on your high school AND college transcripts o They are rigorous courses A class is typically 3 college credits o You may take up to 9 credits per semester o We recommend taking only 3 or 6 your first semester HCC and BDCHS strongly encourage new DE students to first take SLS1501 – College Success Skills BDCHS Transportation Not available for HCC summer classes ONLY goes to HCC Ybor campus 2nd and 3rd blocks o Bus leaves ~9am and returns ~12:35pm o Corresponding HCC Ybor class time frames: o 9:30a – 10:45a o 11:00a – 12:15p Students are encouraged to sign up for a class for both time frames o An online class may count as one of your classes Register accordingly! o BDCHS has denied HCC schedules due to conflicts o If you currently have a 2nd/3rd block core course, it may be difficult to change! Summer/Fall Important dates Deadline For Summer Fall Paperwork to be signed by BDCHS counselor April 6 May 29 Paperwork to be received by HCC April 7 Not yet posted; ~early July HCC dual enrollment registration begins March 20 Not yet posted; ~May 4 HCC classes begin May 18 August 17 Be aware of the HCC and BDCHS academic calendars! o http://www.hccfl.edu/media/971276/calendar%20student%20servic es.pdf o http://bdchs.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/2014-2015Academic-Calendar.pdf Cautionary notes If you withdraw from a course you may not take the course again at HCC If you fail a course, you may not take the class again at HCC and you must petition HCC and BDCHS to take more classes Failing puts you at risk for having a college GPA <2.0 o Some colleges may not accept you and some may only do so on a provisional basis! Summer Scheduling Issue Since the HCC summer schedule starts before BDCHS semester 2 ends, a student may only register for classes that do NOT conflict with his/her BDCHS schedule What to take: o Weekend classes o Night classes o Online classes o Courses that start after June 5th How do I apply? Steps to apply 1. Apply online to HCC 2. Get placement scores 3. Complete paperwork 4. Receive approval and register Step 1: Apply online to HCC Go to the HCC DE website and click “Steps to Apply” Then look for: “To submit an online Application for Admission click here” An HCC ID is usually emailed to you (you need to know the number to take the PERT) o If you do not hear back, call HCC admissions Step 1: Apply to HCC Cont. Step 5 of the application is titled “Education Plans” o Make sure you select “A.A.-Dual Enrollment” in the drop-down menu Step 2: Get placement scores For most HCC classes you must take a placement exam (PERT, SAT, or ACT) o Exception for SLS1501 and CGS1000 PERT = Postsecondary Education Readiness Test o Computer-based o Math, reading, and writing sections o 30 questions per section; untimed o Study guides may be found online: o https://college.measuredsuccess.com/mscollege/ help_resources/P.E.R.T_Study_Guide.pdf o http://wchs.pasco.k12.fl.us/wpcontent/uploads/wchs/2012/01/pert-math-studyguide-1.pdf Additional PERT information PERT is also known as HCC’s college placement test (CPT) If a student takes the PERT, but does not pass all sections, the student may begin taking HCC classes for the sections he/she passed However, a student may only take up to 12 credits before being required to pass all sections Scores may not be more than 2 years old Steps to take the PERT Student must have a valid photo ID Must complete the HCC online application first 1. See an HCC advisor o http://www.hccfl.edu/ssem/advisors.aspx 2. Receive a testing admission ticket 3. Go to a testing site & take the PERT o HCC testing sites: https://www.hccfl.edu/ssem/testing.aspx o Be careful -- testing site hours differ from advisor hours! 4. Give a copy of your scores to your school counselor in an official, sealed envelope Placement scores Step 3: Complete paperwork 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Box 31127 Room 320 Tampa, Fl 33631 Tampa, FL 33606 Email: ndickey@hccfl.edu Fax: 813-253-7061 Step 4: Receive approval & register You completed the application process and now must wait for authorization from HCC that you may register for classes o Registration Authorization Form (emailed/mailed to you) o Sent out on a rolling basis about a week prior to DE course registration Bring this form to an HCC Academic Advisor and enroll in classes o Advisor locations: http://www.hccfl.edu/ssem/advisors.aspx Advisor will give you a Fee Waiver; give it to Bursar’s Office Give your school counselor a copy of your schedule and a list of your required textbooks (discussed later in PowerPoint) What classes should I take? What classes should I enroll in? An explanation of courses Course (ex: SLS1501) o Prefix – 3 letters (ex: SLS) o List of prefixes and what subject areas they stand for: http://www.hccfl.edu/media/791021/florida%20course %20numbering%20system.pdf o Number – 4 numbers (ex: 1501) Section number – 5 digit number that differentiates one offering of a class from another offering of the same class o Correlates to a certain meeting time and location o Ex: SLS1501 x12345: MT 8-9a o Ex: SLS1501 x56789: TR 3-5p Credits & course descriptions Credits o 1 credit ~ 1 hour of class ~ 3 hours of studying per week o Most dual enrollment classes are 3 credits o May take up to 9 credits per semester Course descriptions (search by prefix): http://www.hccfl.edu/catalog/2014-2015catalog-/course-descriptions.aspx o Be aware of prerequisite/placement requirements (found at the end of the course’s description) Searching for class sections How do I search for courses? o http://www.hccfl.edu/SearchSections/ Make sure you enter the correct term Watch out, some sections may be closed! Scheduling issues Do NOT sign up for a class that meets on a Friday o Summer classes may meet on a Friday Make sure your HCC schedule will work with your BDCHS schedule! o HCC semester start/end dates may conflict with BDCHS semester start/end dates Keep in mind when BDCHS offers transportation o Many core academic courses cannot be moved! If it will not work out, register for: o Weekend classes o Night classes o Online classes Know the course you want and its section number when you see an academic advisor to register for a course! More course information Classes fill up! o Turn in paperwork early o When you are authorized to sign up, go quickly o There are very long lines! (some have had to wait over 2 hours) o Students may see an academic advisor at any HCC campus You are not allowed to register for classes or change them via HCC’s online system, you must see an academic advisor to do so Since a course one requests may be full at the time of registration, on the HCC Special Category Authorization Form students should request more courses than they are wanting to take o These would be considered “back up classes” o Students do not have to take a class that is approved How do I get textbooks? Textbooks Once you have a final schedule, YOU must print your required book list Visit http://www.hccfl.edu/bookstore/textbooks/o nline-textbook-ordering.aspx Select the campus at which you are taking the class Search for your course and print out the book list Turn in the book list to your school counselor Textbooks continued Your school counselor will first see if BDCHS has the book o If we have it we will hand it to you o If not, we will provide you a voucher For the second option, go to HCC to purchase books using the voucher o Keep the receipt and give it to your school counselor! If the course requires the purchase of an online access code, please talk with your school counselor Questions?
