"Reva") was an American woman artist who achieved success in the art world in the 1950s and 1960s. Her career offers
important insights into the relationship of gender to art production, form, and content. Like that of some of her contemporaries,
Reva's engagement in feminist ideas augured concerns that became increasingly prominent in the art of the late 1960s and
beyond.Reva Urban spent her youth in California . In 1941 she returned to New York and studied with a Carnegie Fellowship at
the Art Students League of New York . In 1949 she married the German painter Albert Urban (1909-1959), after his death she
married George Robert Carley (1913-1993). From 1958 she exhibited her works nationally and internationally. Ms. Urban has

4: Edouard Brandon (1831 - 1897) "Three Rabbis"
USD 500 - 5,000
Title: Three RabbisMedium: Oil On CanvasSigned: NoDate Created: unknownDimensions: 13 x 16" with frame: 18.5 x
21.5"Condition: ExcellentProvenance: Estate of Daniel FriedenbergJacques Emile Edouard Brandon (1831-1897) was
interested in capturing an aspect of Jewish life. Brandon was fully ensconced in the French art world, closely associating with
and influenced by such famous artists as Camille Corot and Edgar Degas. Indeed, Brandon exhibited at the very first and very
controversial Impressionist exhibition of 1874 (La Salon des Refusée). Brandon began his career painting Christian scenes
before turning by the late 1860s to Jewish subject matter. Living in the "golden age" of synagogues, a phrase that refers to the
building of some 250 elaborate synagogues throughout France during the nineteenth century, Brandon was fascinated with the
architectonic and aesthetic power of the synagogue. Brandon's imposing scenes illustrate the synagogue's physical centrality to
Jewish life. Brandon was the first Jewish artist to consider the synagogue not just as a place of religious prayer and meditation
but also as a temple of aesthetic worship and experience.
5: Leopold Krakauer (1890 - 1954) "Hillside Village
USD 1,250 - 3,000
Charcoal on Paper depicting a hidden hillside village. 21 x 17" unframed and 27 x 23" with the fame. Israeli architect and
graphic artist of Austrian birth. He graduated from the Technische Hochschule and Akademie der Bildenden K?nste, Vienna
(1912), and later worked for Friedrich Ohmann until 1914, when he joined the Austrian Army. In 1919 he participated in an
Expressionists' exhibition in Vienna, and in the early 1920s he was engaged to prepare architectural drawings for the new
Parliament building in Belgrade. In 1925 he moved to Palestine and, after working for Alexander Baerwald in Haifa, started his
own architectural practice in Jerusalem (1926). He participated in many art exhibitions in Palestine, later Israel, after 1928,
producing work in a restrained Expressionist style; as well as charcoal and crayon landscapes of the hills surrounding
Jerusalem, he also produced drawings of the faces of beggars from Jerusalem's Old City, which show the influence of Egon
Schiele and Edvard Munch. In his architectural work he was an ardent disciple of functionalism, with a preference for the
geometry of cubes and prisms that was influenced by De Stijl and Purism; these he could identify with the traditional morphology
of the Arab villages in Galilee that he had studied in many of his landscape drawings. His style matched perfectly the ideals of
community and austerity shared by the founders of the kibbutz movement, who became his most loyal clients. For them he
designed common dining halls, children's houses and general housing.

6: Limestone Ossuary from the 1st C. Museum Quality
USD 8,000 - 22,000
A beautiful ancient limestone ossuary from the 1st century with Hebrew writing on the end. The writing we believe translates to
"Johanan Ben Jishua"Measures 22 3/4" length x 13.25" x 11.25" wide. These are approximate.Provenance: Estate of Daniel
Friedenberg, purchased from prominent dealer and collector Joseph Stieglitz, Tel-Aviv 1967.This limestone chest was used to
hold the bones of a dead person or family which had been gathered together after burial in the soil, when the flesh had
decomposed. The elaborate decoration may imitate a well-known building, possibly the Temple in Jerusalem started by Herod
the Great and completed in AD 64.The practice of family burial required secondary interment, that is the gathering of bones to
make room for a new generation of deceased family members. Burials were usually first made in pits but the wealthy cut a tomb
cave.Herod was appointed king of Judaea by the Roman Senate in 45 BC. Under his rule Jerusalem was rebuilt and the Temple
was completely remodelled. Soon after Herod died in 4 BC Judaea became a province of the Roman empire administered by
procurators. Power shifted between direct Roman control and Roman recognition of Herod's successors as king. In AD 66,
however, the Jews revolted. The revolt was crushed only after four years of bitter conflict. Jerusalem was besieged and
subsequently the city, including the Temple, was destroyed.

This has been called the single most significant work of Mane-Katz. A three quarter length portrait of one of the world's most
important Jewish scholars and his friend, Cecil Roth. Signed on the front with a personal inscription on the back this portrait is
rivaled by no other. Title: "Cecil Roth"Medium: Oil on CanvasSigned: Upper Left with inscription on reverseDate Created:
1956Dimensions without Frame: 35.8 x 29.1" or 91x 74 cm.Condition: ExcellentProvenance: Estate of Daniel Friedenberg A
summary of the Cecil Roth Portrait by Mane Katz. When a work of art is appraised first and foremost is authenticity. We have no
doubt as to the authenticity of this work based upon the impeccable provenance of the piece. In addition the style, brushwork
and signature are all correct for Mane-Katz. While an appraisal is subjective and contains many different elements the key point
are genre, composition, medium, style and yes, size matters. A work that is within the artist genre is worth more than a work that
is outside of the genre of the artist. (Example: Mark Rothko, Abstract within the genre of Rothko Untitled No. 17 (33.6 million
dollars) versus portrait of Leah Farber ($134,500) which is not within Rothko’s genre. The main genre and bestselling segment
of Mane-Katz works are his portraits of Jewish persons. The portrait of Cecil Roth is not only within the genre of Mane-Katz is
leads the genre. Most of the subjects of Mane Katz are not identified. In this portrait we have the identification of the subject who
with over 600 publications is famous in his own right. There is not one portrait, group nor individual, that contains elements as
strong as the ones presented in the Cecil Roth piece which identifies the subject with the Jewish religion and his writing
accomplishments. While a portrait of Cecil Roth would stand alone on its own merits, Mane-Katz went one step further and
embellished this portrait with an extraordinary amount of symbolism, leaving the viewer with no doubt as to the subjects religion
and occupation. The Menorah (symbolism: religion) in the background is framed by a light bulb (symbolism: enlightenment &
ideas) and the hand (symbol: writing/writer) gently cradled in green (symbolism: “to grow”, “growing” ) creates a perfect balance
between the various elements in this work . Both in style and composition this piece leads Mane-Katz’s works. Lastly we have
medium, which is oil on canvas and the canvas size being 29 x 36.5” which is what one wants in a ¾ length portrait. The
condition of this piece is excellent. Painted at the peak of Mane-Katz’s career and placed there not only by the style and color
but by the dated inscription on the reverse this piece has all of the elements that a serious collector desires. It is the best of
Mane-Katz. p>Biography of the Artist:Raised in an orthodox Jewish family in Russia, Mane-Katz was born in the Ukraine and
became an early 20th-century artist, known especially for portraits and paintings with Jewish themes. From childhood, he had
been influenced by stories of Jewish mysticism, which was reflected in his paintings. He had a peripatetic life between Russia,
France, Israel, and America. He first studied art in Kiev at the Beaux Arts Academy, and in 1913, went to Paris where he
associated with Chaim Soutine and Marc Chagall and continued his art studies there at the Beaux Arts Academy. During World
War I, he tried to join the Foreign Legion but was rejected because he was too short. He went back in Russia again, this time
joining the Soviet Revolution but rejected the cause because he was so horrified by Josef Stalin. He worked briefly for the
Russian ballets, and in 1921, he returned to Paris where in 1927 he took French citizenship. For the next twelve years, he
traveled widely, showing his art work and doing many paintings. In 1939, as World War II was breaking out, he was drafted by
the French and then was taken prisoner by the Germans. He escaped and went to the United States and remained there until
1945, exhibiting his paintings at Katia Granoff Gallery and Wildenstein Gallery. After the war, he returned to Paris where he had
exhibited in the Salons. In Paris to the end of his career, he worked happily, painting hundreds of portraits of rabbis and works
of Jewish symbolism. In this way, it is thought he was to satisfy his father, who had wanted him to be a rabbi. During these last
years, he also resumed intense travel, going to Brazil, Japan, Israel and Argentina as well as throughout Europe.About the
subject:Cecil RothCecil Roth (1899, London - 1970, Jerusalem), a renowned Jewish historian and recognized expert in Jewish
art, was educated at Oxford University. Initially trained as a general historian with an interest in Italy, Roth soon began to
concentrate on Jewish subjects, first as a freelance journalist and lecturer and later as a reader at Oxford University (1939
through 1964). Upon retiring from Oxford, Roth settled in Jerusalem and was a visiting professor at Columbia University,
Queens College of the City University of New York, Stern College for Women, Yeshiva University and Bar Ilan University. A
prolific writer, Roth published more than 600 books and articles, which have been translated into many languages. His popular
works include The House of Nasi (two volumes, of which Dona Gracia is the first), A Short History of the Jewish People, The
Jewish Contribution to Civilization and The Standard Jewish Encyclopedia. From 1966 until his death in 1970, he served as
editor-in-chief of the Encyclopaedia Judaica. INTERNET BIDDING WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR THIS LOT. CALL

16: "Schulklopfer's" Mallet or Irish Cudgel
USD 1,500 - 3,000
A late 19th C. "Schulklopfer's" Mallet with a Hebrew Inscription & Carving of a Boar. The inscription which is the same as the
inscription on the mallet at the Jewish Museum (http://www.lessing-photo.com/dispimg.asp?i=30050628+&cr=30&cl=1) reads
"In the House of God We Shall Go with Feeling". While the inscription appears to be the same the overall feeling of this mallet
seems to have an Irish inspiration with the handle being similar to that of the Irish cudgel. This piece also appears to be made
from Blackthorn and appears to have the same finish found on Irish Cudgels which are also frequently called Shillelagh's with
the difference being found in the length of the stick. Our piece measures 21 inches in length and is quite heavy. There is a large
split on one side of the boar which runs from front to back but has not gone more than 1/3 of an inch. Schulklopfer's Mallet, Irish
Cudgel or both? We will leave that for you to decide.

Pfeffermann in Latvia or in Kreslawka, Vitebsk, Belarus, he was a European Jewish artist who spent most of his adult life in
Jerusalem.Pann studied the fundamentals of drawing for three months with the painter Yehuda Pen of Vitebsk, who also taught
Marc Chagall. In his youth, he traveled in Russia and Poland, earning a living mainly as an apprentice in sign workshops. In
1898 he went south to Odessa where he was accepted into the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1903, he was in Kishinev where he
documented the Kishinev pogrom with drawings; an effort that is thought to have contributed to his self-definition as an artist
who chronicles Jewish history. Still in 1903, he moved to Paris, where he rented rooms in La Ruche, a Parisian building (which
still exists) where Modigliani, Chagall, Chaim Soutine and other Jewish artists also lived. Pann studied at the French Academy
under William-Adolphe Bouguereau. He earned his living primarily by drawing pictures for the popular illustrated newspapers of
the era. In 1912, Boris Schatz, founder and director of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design visited Pann in Paris and invited
him to come work in Jerusalem. In 1913, after traveling in Southern Europe and Egypt, Pann arrived in Jerusalem where he had
decided to settle for life. Pann went to see Schatz and it was decided that he would head the painting department at the Bezalel
Academy for several months while Schatz embarked on an extensive overseasfund-raising trip. According to Haaretz art critic
Smadar Sheffi, a work form this period with the simple title Jerusalem shows a cluster of buildings at sunset "with a sky in
blazing orange." The painting is "more expressive and abstract that is typical of his work," and Sheffi speculates that "the
encounter with the city" of Jerusalem was a "strong emotional experience" for the artist.Pann returned to Europe to arrange his
affairs before moving permanently to the British Mandate of Palestine, but was caught on the continent by World War I. Pann's
wartime paintings would prove to be among "the most important" of his career. He made many posters to support the French
war effort. He also made a series of fifty drawings showing the extreme suffering of Jewish communities caught in the fighting
between Germany, Poland and Russia. Art critic Smadar Sheffi regards them as "the most important part of his oeuvre." These
"shocking" drawings put modern viewers in mind of depictions of the Holocaust. Pann's drawings were intended as journalistic
documentation of the fighting and were successfully exhibited in the United States during the War. According to Pann's
autobiography, the Russians, who were allied with the French, refused to allow a wartime exhibition of the drawings in
France.According to the New York Times, the drawings were published in Paris during the war, but the government intervened
ot block their distribution on the grounds that they "reflected damagingly upon an ally" (Russia).]Upon his post-war return to
Jerusalem in 1920, Pann took up an teaching position at the Bezalel Academy and wrote that he was about to embark on his
life-work, the painting and drawing of scenes from the Hebrew Bible. He returned briefly to Vienna where he met and married
Esther Nussbaum and purchased a lithographic press, which the couple brought home to Jerusalem. Pann began work on a
series of lithographs intended to be published in an enormous illustrated Bible, and although that series was never completed,
he is widely admired for the series of pastels inspired by Bible stories that he began in the 1940s. The iconography of these
works is linked to the 19th century oriental ism. He was part of a movement of contemporary Jewish artists interested in Biblical
scenes, including Ephraim Moses Lilien, and Ze'ev Raban. All three were influenced by Art Nouveau and by the Symbolist
movement. He died in Jerusalem in 1963.Selected Exhibitions:Abel Pann Paints the Bible, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem.

FriedenbergBiography of the Artist:Alexander Dobkin: Born in Italy, Alexander Dobkin moved to New York at an early age and
studied at the City College of New York and at the Art Students League, under George Bridgeman and Jose Clemente Orozco.
His first one man exhibition was held at New York's A.C.A. Gallery in 1935. He later exhibited at such major institutions as the
Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery and the Carnegie Institute. Dobkin also
illustrated a number of fine books and taught for many years in New York at both the Educational Alliance and at the Art
Students League. Today his original paintings and lithographs are included in the following collections; the Butler Art Institute,
the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Tel Aviv Museum, Israel, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Library of Congress
and the Smithsonian Institute. Many of Alexander Dobkin's original lithographs deal with one of the artist's major themes -- his
masterful examinations of the world of childhood. Confidence, like Dobkin's other fine studies, reveals the mystery and
innocence of this all too short period of one's life. Confidence was commissioned by the Associated American Artists of New
York in 1959. The Associated American Artists was created in the mid 1930's and commissioned original graphic art from such
great American masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and many others. During the 1950's and 1960's
it published lithographs and etchings by artists of no less distinction, such as, Jack Levine, Sidney Chafetz, Marion Greenwood
and Alexander Dobkin.

3/4 x 26 1/4"Condition: ExcellentProvenance: Estate of Daniel FriedenbergBiography of the Artist:Efraim 'Fima' Roeytenberg,
born December 22 1914 - died October 16 2005 One of the last of his generation of abstract painters, the Israeli-Parisian artist
Fima, who died in Jerusalem aged 90, moved between places and cultures more than most. Born and brought up in Harbin,
China, he had a multicultural background that enabled him to develop a personal idiom which sat naturally within the universal
language of modernist art. "It is only when I travel on my canvas that I feel at home," he said.Efraim Roeytenberg, commonly
known by his nickname Fima, was the son of Russian-Jewish parents. His father, an engineer who worked on the construction
of the Eastern China railway, had settled in the country 10 years earlier. Harbin, with a Russian community that grew
considerably after the 1917 revolution, was already a Russian-Chinese city: Fima went to a Russian school, where he also
learned Chinese. In 1933, after attending secondary school, he moved to Shanghai, a thriving cosmopolitan city with its own
Russian colony and a growing Jewish community. After a short attempt at studying architecture, Fima turned to art and began
studying with a Russian painter and a Viennes portraitist. He soon joined the Russian Academy of Fine Arts in Shanghai, and
later taught drawing there. He also studied Chinese calligraphy and became interested in Chinese philosophy. It was this part of
his education that would prove significant for his career. He made a modest beginning with a 1947 solo exhibition at the Jewish
Recreation Club in Shanghai and a couple of group shows, but his career in China was cut short when, in February 1949,
shortly before Shanghai came under communist control, Fima left for the young state of Israel. His encounter with the new
country was a difficult experience. To earn a living, he was forced to work as a construction inspector in the mass building
projects of the post-independence years, and had little time for painting. The brilliant Mediterranean light made his attempts to
paint even harder, and the local artistic community did not particularly welcome his figurative, anecdotal drawings along Chinese
lines. But it was in Israel during the 1950s that Fima made contacts with contemporary art and gradually developed a new
language of painting. In trips to Italy (1954) and to Paris (1956) he encountered the European old masters and modern art. By
the end of the decade he was gaining a reputation, and critical, as well as some commercial, success. His 1960 exhibition at the
Rina gallery in Jerusalem, owned by the American dealer Bertha Urdang (known for supporting contemporary and avant-garde
art), sold out, and led to his discovery by the French critic, Jacques Lassaigne. This meeting resulted in Fima's move to Paris in
1961, where he later joined the Jacques Massol gallery. He was to remain in Paris for the next 41 years (returning permanently
to Israel in 2002), exhibiting in the French capital and abroad. But he kept his Jerusalem studio, and his close contacts with the
Israeli art scene, by exhibiting regularly at the Bineth gallery and by taking part in numerous export group shows of Israeli art,
such as the 1964 Art Israel shown at the New York Museum of Modern Art.

39: Georges Braque (1892-1963) Etching Birds in Flight

Title: "Birds In Flight"Medium: Ink on Paper EtchingSigned:NoDate Created: UnknownPrint: 13.5 x 17 3/4"Dimensions with
Frame: 16.25 x 20.25"Condition: ExcellentProvenance: Estate of Daniel FriedenbergBiography of the Artist:Abstract depiction of
birds represented in dark silhouette against a lighter charcoal background. Bears a bold plate impression, accompanied by NYC
Collector's club letter of authenticity. Georges Braque was born in Argenteuil in 1892. From an early age, he attended evening
classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Le Havre, where he met Othon Friez and Raoul Dufy. In 1904 Braque set up his studio in
Paris and three years later showed three paintings at le Salon des Indépendants.Braque regularly went down to l'Estaque, near
Marseille, to paint ; the works were shown by Kahnweiller in his gallery, the foreword to the catalogue of the exhibition being by
the poet Apollinaire. Kahnweiller also arranged for Braque to meet Picasso ; the latter had just finished the Demoiselles
d'Avignon painting, which made a strong impression on Braque. Braque then painted several pictures in the south of France, all
of which were refused at the 1908 Salon d'Automne. The critics were unsparing about Braque, and Vauxcelles wrote in the "Gil
Blas" review of the 14 th of November 1908 : "Mr Braque is a daring young man, he despises form, and reduces everything,
landscapes, people, houses, to geometric diagrams, to cubes". The term was coined... Braque and Picasso friendship was
strengthened, and until 1914 both artists worked in close collaboration, mutually influencing each other, and introducing into
their pictures stenciled letters and numbers, imitations of wood and marble, sand and other substances, collages etc.But in
1914, Braque was called up, and was seriously injured in the head. After a long convalescence, Braque started painting again in
1917, in a less angular and more colourful manner. From 1933 to 1938 Braque frequently returned to the still-life theme, and in
1949 finished the big "artist's studio" series, as well as designed the stage scenery for Molière 's Tartuffe at Jouvet request. In
1952, Braque was commissioned to decorate a ceiling in the Louvre ; in 1956, he made five stained-glass windows for a chapel
in Varengeville, where he owned a house. Braque then began his work on the bird theme.Georges Braque 's interest in prints
dates from 1907. Between 1907 and 1912, Braque produced engravings in the cubist style, using etching and dry-point ("Etude
de nu", "Petite guitare cubiste", "Fox", "Job", "Bass" ou encore "Pall"). He made his first lithograph in 1921, a still-life published
by Kahnweiller ("Nature morte aux verres et fruits" printed by Charlot in Paris). Throughout his life, Braque continued to make
prints, mastering the techniques of etching, lithography, aquatint, woodcut. Among the most important prints, there are "L'oiseau
de feu" etching and aquatint with varnish from 1958, "Théière et citrons" lithograph from 1949, "l'oiseau et son ombre" from
1959, "Corbeille de fleurs", etchign with varnish from 1951, whose edition is only 10 copies, "L'oiseau sur fond carmin", etching
from 1958 made in the Crommelynck atelier, "Le char noir", etching from 1958, "vol de nuit", lithograph from 1957, printed by
Fernand Mourlot in Paris, L'oiseau d'octobre or "Feuilles, couleur lumière", lithograph from 1953, always with the collaboration of
Fernand Mourlot.Braque engraved work includes joint productions with major poets : Eric Satie ("Léger comme un oeuf", with
one etching, Francis Ponge ( Cinq sapates) with five original etchings, Pierre Reverdy ( La liberté des mers, with 7 original
lithographs in colors, Franck Elgar ( La résurection de l'oiseau illustrated with 4 original lithographs, Jean Paulhan ("Braque le
Patron", with two lithographs), Guillaume Apollinaire ( Si je mourais là bas with 18 woodcuts), Marcel Jouhandeau ( La descente
aux enfers with 4 lithographs) ; Saint-John Perse ( L'ordre des oiseaux, with twelve etchings and aquatints in colors). The most
important of these productions is René Char 's Lettera amorosa ( Lettera amorosa), for which Braque made twenty-nine colour
lithographs. The artist has also print for collective books : "Un poème dans chaque livre" from Eluard, illustrated with 16 etchings
by Joan Miro, Alberto Giacometti, Marc Chagall, André Masson etc. ; "Sentences sans paroles" with an engraving of Alberto
Giacometti, Paroles peintes with prints of Marc Chagall, Bissière, Zadkine, Antoni Tapiès, Eduardo Chillida etc.Braque died in
1963. In is orbituary delivered at The Louvre in September of that year, Malraux stated : "There is a part of France's honor
called Braque, because a country's honor is also made of what it gives to the world."

Title: NudeMedium: Conte on PaperSigned: YesDate Created: unknownDimensions: opening 11 x 17" Framed: 17.5 x
24"Condition: ExcellentProvenance: Estate of Daniel FriedenbergBiography of the Artist:Leon Kroll remained a painter of
realism at a time when the American art world was moving rapidly into abstraction and other styles that fell under the general
term of modernism. Nevertheless, asserting that he liked easy-to-recognize subjects that created a sense of that which was
warm, sympathetic, and romantic, he was a leading artist of his time painting lush landscapes, figures, and still lifes. Other
subjects such as his industrial scenes and cityscapes had elements of social realism and were painted with a heavier brush than
his other works.. He was especially focused on the human figure, and many of them seemed dreamlike in filmy dresses reclining
in landscapes.Kroll was born in New York City in 1884. He first studied at the Art Students League under John H. Twachtman,
and in 1904 entered the National Academy School, winning the Academy's premier award in 1908. To earn money, he worked
as a janitor and did mechanical drawing. He traveled to Paris in 1908, where he studied at the Academie Julian as a student of
Jean-Paul Laurens, and exhibited at some of the major Paris exhibitions. While in Paris, he came under the influence of the
Impressionists and was especially taken with the works of Paul Cezanne. When Kroll returned from Europe in 1910, he mounted
a one-man show of his Parisian work. The exhibition was a critical and financial success. He became an instructor at the
National Academy and also taught at the Maryland Institute (1919-23), the Art Institute of Chicago (1924-25), and The
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1929-30).Kroll began to paint views of New York in 1918, a subject that fascinated him
for the rest of his life. George Bellows, who not only became a friend but also exerted a strong influence upon Kroll's work, was
an admirer of his art. Through Bellows, Kroll was introduced to the Eight and began exhibiting with them at the MacDowell Club.
He also traveled to paint including to Rockport and Gloucester, Massachusetts; Monhegan Island in Maine; and in 1917, he
joined his friends Robert Henri, and George Bellows in Santa Fe, New Mexico.During the 1930s, he worked for the WPA on
murals for the Department of Justice Building.Kroll maintained an apartment at 253 West Forty-second Street in Manhattan,
from which he painted several views of New York scenes. He died in New York City in 1974.

Dimensions with Frame: 29 1/4 x 21 1/4"Condition: ExcellentProvenance: Estate of Daniel FriedenbergBiography of the
Artist:Mordecai Ardon was born Max Bronstein in 1896 in Tuchow, Poland. He studied art under Klee, Itten and Kandinsky at
the Weimar "Bauhaus" and the technique of drawing with Prof. Max Doerner at the Munich Academy of Art. After teaching in
Itten's school of art in Berlin, he emigrated to Israel in 1933 where he taught at the Belazel School of Arts and Crafts in
Jerusalem. He became director of the school in 1940 and Art Advisor to the Israeli Minister of Education in 1952. Jaacov Agam
was among his students. The artist had a turbulent life as actor, revolutionary, Bauhas disciple and teacher. Ardon's paintings
have universal and immediate appeal. They are known for their gemlike colorshnical brilliance and great variety of mood,
ranging from the playfully ironic to the mysterious and pensive. The years of his artistic maturation were in Jerusalem, where his
stylistic evolution from realism to abstraction was fully realized.Ardon's paintings are not created by intellectual decisions and
technical procedures alone. He speaks of the "hidden spark", which appears suddenly in the midst of working, all his
calculations. Bringing the painting to life with his brush and colors, Ardon exalts all creation. Whether he paints leaf, stone, sun,
moon, wind or rain, the image is never merely a depiction of outer reality but a revelation of its essence. In bringing forms to life
on the canvas, Ardon adds a dimension to our perception of the universe, endowing it with fresh meaning.During the 1950s he
began to exhibit in Europe and gained a reputation as a distinguished colorist with a strong and near-Surrealist imagination. In
1954 he participated in the Venice Biennale where he won a UNESCO prize. He held one-man shows at the Stedelijk Museum,
Amsterdam in 1960 and the Marlborough Fine Arts Museum, London, in 1962. Like his contemporaries, Ben Shahn and Moshe
Castel, Mordecai Ardon often enriched his works with the Hebrew alphabet. His works, mainly executed in oils, are to be found
in the best-known museums of Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Brussels, New York, Pittsburgh and Munich. He received the Israel
Prize 1963. He died in 1992.

67: Wm Hogarth "The Enraged Musician" Hogarth Edition
USD 200 - 1,600
Very rare and much sought after Title: "The Enraged Musician"Medium: EtchingSigned: BottomDate Created: 1741Dimensions:
16.25 x 14.5" unframedFramed: 21.75 x 19.75"Condition: ExcellentProvenance: Estate of Daniel FriedenbergBiography of the
Artist:William Hogarth (10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic
and editorial cartoonist who has been credited with pioneering western sequential art. His work ranged from realistic portraiture
to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects". Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political
illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian."William Hogarth was an English painter and printmaker who
poignantly commented the English society of the eighteenth century with biting satire. The career and life of Hogarth were as
unusual as his prints. William was born as the son of a shopkeeper (his mother) and a schoolmaster and publisher. The youth of
William was overshadowed by the chronic financial problems of his father, who was even imprisoned because of his debts. This
humiliating experience formed Hogarth for the rest of his life. Hogarth started an apprenticeship as a silversmith in 1714, but
never finished it. He then tried his luck as an independent engraver for copper plates. His early commissions were for cards,
book illustrations and single prints. In 1720, he registered at the John Vanderbank Art Academy. Around 1726 or earlier, he was
taught painting by James Thornhill whose daughter he later married. He earned some reputation for theater decoration
paintings. Hogarth experienced his first big financial success with A Harlot's Progress, a series of paintings from which he
produced engravings in 1732. Only the engravings survived. The paintings were lost in a fire in 1755. A Harlot's Progress is a
set of 6 prints about the hapless life of a prostitute. It was a completely new kind of genre prints that were referred as moral
history subjects. After the big success of A Harlot's Progress, Hogarth published a male counterpart series, A Rake's Progress a story in eight plates showing the decline of a promising young man into a life of drinking and immoral behavior. In 1743, the
painting series Marriage à la Mode was completed. It is considered his masterpiece. In Marriage à la Mode Hogarth turned his
satire on the follies of the upper classes. The theme of this series is about marriage for money. Although the prints of Marriage à
la Mode sold well, the paintings did not. Therefore all prints designed afterwards, were created exclusively as print designs
without any painted counterparts. In 1747 followed the series Industry and Idleness, a moral story of an idle and an industrious
apprentice in twelve plates. In 1753 Hogarth wrote his book The Analysis of Beauty, a wrap-up of his artistic and esthetic
principles. Hogarth was a very controversial and individual character. Driven by a sense for justice, he missed no chance to get
into a quarrel with his contemporaries. His most hated enemy was the British politician John Wilkes, whom he had ridiculed in
one of his engravings. William Hogarth died on October 26, 1764.
68: Ya'akov Boussidan Etching "Silent Figures"

3/4"Dimensions with Frame: 26 x 19 3/4"Condition: ExcellentProvenance: Estate of Daniel FriedenbergBiography of the
Artist:Ya'akov Boussidan was born in Port Said, Egypt, a melting-pot of cultures and languages. When he was ten, he
immigrated with his parents to Israel and was educated in Youth Aliyah, an immigrant youth framework at Kibbutz Givat-Chayim.
His artistic talent was discovered by Prof. Reuven Feuerstein, the former chief psychologist of Youth Aliyah and winner of the
Israel Prize for Education. Their close friendship continues to this day. Boussidan's artistic training in Israel began under the
guidance of Prof. Joseph Schwartzmann of the Germanic school and a distinguished student of Kathe Kolwitz. Boussidan
studied sculpture and ceramics with Rudi Lehmann and Hedwig Grossman and received important exposure to the modern and
abstract streams from Shlomo Vitkin. With the encouragement of Prof. Willem Sandberg (former head of the Stedelijk Museum
in Amsterdam, and one of the founders of the Israel Museum), the twenty-seven-year-old Boussidan won the Rothschild
Foundation Scholarship. This enabled him to continue his academic studies at Goldsmith College in London, where he
graduated with distinction for his abstract version of Song of Songs. This print also won an award at the Biennale for Prints in
Monte Carlo. In London, Boussidan became acquainted with luminaries in the art world, including Alix De-Rothschild, Yoko Ono,
artists Peter De Francia, Paul Drury and Sam Maitin, sculptor Claes Oldenberg, as well as with writer Alan Sillitoe and his wife,
the poet Ruth Fainlight, a close friend of Sylvia Plath. His longstanding friendship with artists such as Agathe Sorel, a fine
sculptor and a dedicated printmaker, has a clear impact on his approach to modern printmaking. In addition, the Israeli Cultural
Attaché in London at the time, Benjamin Tammuz, became a close friend and used Boussidan as the inspiration for the book
Bottle Parables. The noted collector Georges Bloch acted as one of Boussidan's patrons. In addition, Boussidan's achievements
have been credited by the manuscript researcher, Dr. Leila Avrin, who has written about his work in several sources, including
the Encyclopaedia Judaica. Dr. Bat Sheva Ida Goldman, Curator at the Tel Aviv Museum, is currently writing a consequential
essay on Boussidans' Haggadah, and has also interviewed Prof Reuven Feuerstein with his interpretation on this opus magnum
Boussidan has been awarded the Jesselson Prize of Judaica from the Israel Museum in 1990. His celebrated artist book
"Jerusalem – Names in Praise", has been launched at the Israel Musuem in 2006 and at the British Parliament in London in
2007, hosted by MP Louise Ellman Ya'akov Boussidan has been a visiting lecturer at several colleges in England. In his studio,
Boussidan teaches art as a métier, in order to develop his students' potential skills, based on the school of Prof. Schwartzmann.
After many years in London he has recently decided to move to his permanent studio in Israel.

he immigrated to Australia where he served the armed forces. In 1948 he left Australia for Paris. Two years later Bergner arrived
to Israel and settled in Safed and afterwards in Tel Aviv. He participated in numerous exhibitions in Melbourne, Paris, Tel-Aviv
New York and in the Venice Biennale and the Sao Paulo Biennale. "He paints still lives as though to install stabilizers against
the turbulence of the dream, and perhaps these stabilizers serve him in time as a touchstone." Nissim Aloni, 1983 The
Surrealism served as a source of inspiration for Bergner, though he does not consider himself a surrealist but a lover of stories,
and indeed narrative elements appear frequently in his work. He uses the "displacement" element, as the Surrealists did, and
that is detaching the figures, objects or landscapes from the logical context and into a poetical-magical climate.

83: Toussaint Louverture wood bust
USD 20 - 80
Nicely carved bust of Francois-Dominique Toussaint Louverture signed, "Darbouze" on the back. 7" in height.
François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture (May 20, 1743 – April 7, 1803) was the leader of the Haitian Revolution. His military
genius and political acumen led to the establishment of the independent black state of Haiti, transforming an entire society of
slaves into a free, self-governing people. The success of the Haitian Revolution shook the institution of slavery throughout the
New World.Toussaint Louverture began his military career as a leader of the 1791 slave rebellion in the French colony of Saint
Domingue. Initially allied with the Spaniards of neighboring Santo Domingo, Toussaint switched allegiance to the French when
they abolished slavery. He gradually established control over the whole island, expelling the British invaders and using political
and military tactics to gain power over his rivals. Throughout his years in power, he worked to improve the economy and security
of Saint Domingue. He restored the plantation system using free labour, negotiated trade treaties with Britain and the USA and
maintained a large and well-disciplined army.In 1801 he promulgated an autonomist constitution for the colony, with himself as
governor for life. In 1802 he was forced to resign by forces sent by Napoleon Bonaparte to restore French authority in the
colony. He was deported to France where he died in 1803. The Haitian Revolution continued under his lieutenant,
Jean-Jacques Dessalines, who declared independence in 1804.
