President’s Message
Dear Friends:
I do hope that if March comes in as a lion, it goes out as a lamb as per
the aphorism! We really are so blessed with a beautiful spring here in Southern
California that a bit of rain or wind is not a great price to pay for living in Paradise!
To those who have been so generous in sending in gifts to Sustaining the Mind, I offer the thanks of
every researcher and scholar at Brandeis University who toils each day in the laboratories there to
understand the workings of the brain....and how diseases occur and can be treated. It’s a noble
undertaking....as are those of you who support their work.
April 30th my fellow Presidium member Sandy Marin will be hosting a tea for new members....and those
interested in joining us as well. “An Introduction to Brandeis National Committee,” along with a story or
two about the University....along with goodies for the tummy and friendship for the soul will be offered.
Our Book and Author Luncheon will be held on May 6th....and the lineup of presenters is
wonderful...check it out in this Bulletin and mark your calendars! Funds go to Sustaining the Mind, and
the day, with the stellar speakers and lovely lunch will be the highlight of our fund-raising campaign.
May you all have a bountiful spring....with good health and peace.

The 2015 Book and Author Luncheon
Wednesday, May 6 11:30 a.m.
Sheraton Carlsbad Resort, 5480 Grand Pacific Drive, Carlsbad
(just off Palomar Airport Rd., free valet and self-parking available)
Three prize-winning authors will share their wit and knowledge:
Alan Russell is the bestselling author of eleven novels, from whodunits to comedic capers to suspense. Publisher's
Weekly calls him "one of the best writers in the mystery field today”. Russell and his works have been nominated for
most of the major awards in crime fiction. A native and resident of California, the 6’ 7” Russell is a former college
basketball player, the proud father of three children, and an avid gardener and cook.
Aline Ohanesian’s great-grandmother was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide, and her story provided the idea for
Orhan’s Inheritance. When Orhan’s grandfather is found dead, submerged in a vat of dye, Orhan inherits his kilim rugmaking business. The family estate, however, has been left to a stranger, a mysterious old woman in an Armenian
retirement home in Los Angeles. Orhan flies to Los Angeles where he unearths the story. A California native, Ohanesian
lives in San Juan Capistrano with her husband and two young sons.
Taffy Cannon is the author of fourteen novels in which many characters die, often unpleasantly. Her books have
been finalists for many awards, and she wrote the ‘Booked for Travel’ mystery series under the pseudonym Emily Toll.
She also wrote an Academy Award-nominated short film. She has worked a multitude of odd jobs from carnival barker
to professional feminist. She has been on the TV quiz show Jeopardy, where she wagered everything on Women Writers
in the Daily Double - and won. She lives in Southern California.
Moderator to be announced.
Please be an angel, lend your support and underwrite part of the program.
Chairs: Gayle Wise, bncfnp@aol.com, 858-488-1279 or Cynthia Birnbaum, cfsbirnbaum@gmail.com, 858-454-9996

THE BRANDEIS SCOOP
University on Wheels gave us a new interest in the International Business School, which recently
worked with an international real estate firm on a ground-breaking study. It included Be’er Sheva,
a growing center in the Negev in Israel, and was featured in an article in The Jerusalem Report.
T3 Advisors, a global corporate real estate services and consulting firm, and Brandeis International Business School
announced the results of the first of its kind joint Global Technology Emerging Markets study. A unique collaboration
between business and higher education, the study provides leaders at technology and life sciences firms with
recommendations on the best the “cities of tomorrow”.
The study analyzed a vast array of data to identify seven cities, including the cost of doing business, future labor pool
opportunities, students at centers of excellence in science, technology, and engineering, as well as other key business
climate metrics.
“Through this innovative partnership with T3 Advisors, the Brandeis International Business School students undertook
methodical research to locate the best global regions for technology and life sciences companies seeking to expand their
business around the world,” said Ed Chazen, senior lecturer and head of the real estate specialization at Brandeis IBS.
“They unearthed a great cohort of cities representing the next frontier for emerging technology markets.”
Community Service
Our chapter has again offered to help out at the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry of the Jewish
Family Service on Sunday, March 29 at 9:00 a.m. Several members of the chapter
volunteered last year, and said that not only was it fun stacking the shelves and putting
together packages of food to be given away, but also inspiring to work with some of the
best teens in the country! The pantry is located in the Kearny Mesa area.
If you’d like to participate, and for more information, please contact Ilene Mittman,
Community Service/Social Action chair at ilmitt@san.rr.com or 858-456-7698.
Wanted: chapter members to help on committees next year.
Responsibilities: not too many, not very difficult, mentors eager to help.
Rewards: satisfaction, friendships, knowledge you’re helping BNC and our chapter
If you enjoy the study groups and events, please help keep them going!
If you’re a new member, don’t worry; you’ll have plenty of guidance;
It’s the best way to get active and make new friends.
Call or write any Nominating Committee member, say you’ll lend a hand:
Bea Sklarewitz, Joyce Spiegel; Sherrie Hunninghake, Susan Moroff, Ann Zall

A Very Personal Appeal
Last month every member of our chapter received a note from Gayle Wise, who shared her
very personal experience of living with her husband’s Parkinson’s disease. Won’t you heed her
appeal and use the return envelope she enclosed with a generous donation. Help Brandeis
University researchers discover a cure for neurodegenerative diseases. The campaign ends in June, and BNC is working
hard to reach its $3 million goal.
If you no longer have the envelope, please send your checks (made out to BNC) to
Gayle Wise, 1369 Caminito Floreo, La Jolla, CA 92037. Thank you.
Together we can make a difference
in support of scientific research in the neurosciences and neurodegenerative diseases.
Planned Giving
Planned gifts provide donors the opportunity to meet both their
philanthropic and financial goals. Examples of planned gifts
include charitable-gift annuities, bequests, deferred annuities,
charitable-remainder trusts and donor-advised funds
