Dear Bishop Kelley Community,
T
hank you! I can't say it enough. I am very grateful to the many
donors who sacrificed to make needed improvements at BK for our
876 students. In addition to the improvements you'll see listed
below, we were also able to offer $700,000 in tuition assistance to
hundreds of students.
In this edition of the Ambassador, you'll find the annual report for
the 2014-15 school year. You'll see the great progress we've made
and the names of those foundations, individuals, and groups that
made it possible. A few highlights from the 2014-15 school year:
• A significant increase in the percentage of alumni giving back to BK.
• The completion of the Jim Scalet Family Fieldhouse, Phase I of "The
Championship Drive," our effort to overhaul the stadium facilities.
• The expansion and renovation of the original fieldhouse
built in 1996, Phase II of the "The Championship Drive."
We will dedicate this facility November 20, 2015.
• The construction of a new Wrestling/Spirit Squad facility.
We expect to dedicate this facility in November.
• The installation of two new gym floors. The funds for
this project came as a result of the 2015 BK Auction.
• The addition of new sidewalks, landscaping, irrigation, storm
drainage, outdoor seating, and lighting along with 40 security
cameras around campus to keep our students, faculty, and staff safe.
• New equipment for our competitive Robotics Team.
• Upgrades of lighting and sound systems and a new baby
grand piano for the theater as well as new sound systems for
the stadium and our larger gym, the Sacred Heart Gym.
These tremendous strides are due to the generosity of many
people. Here's the great news: WE'RE NOT DONE! More
exciting plans are in the works for academics, fine arts, and
athletics. Here is what we have planned for 2015-16:
• Classroom renovations for Choir, Piano, Journalism,
and our Digital Media Program/Bishop Kelley TV.
• Additional campus security installations that will allow
for an instant lockdown of all occupied buildings.
• Fundraising for new stands and press box for
Phase III of the "The Championship Drive."
• Construction of a breezeway from the cafeteria to
the Science and Technology Center so students, faculty,
and staff stay dry while changing classes.
Many individuals stepped up to make these improvements possible.
But think about this...What could be accomplished if we had even
more support? What could be accomplished for our current and future
students if more foundations, alumni, current parents, and past
parents supported this great cause of Catholic, Lasallian education?
My hope is that the generosity of the many foundations
and individuals listed in this annual report, will inspire
many others to give.

Dear Patrons of Bishop Kelley High School:
A
s a representative of the Bishop Kelley
Advisory Council, and on behalf of the
students, administrators, faculty and
staff who benefit from your generosity,
I’d like to thank each and every one of you who
have contributed your time, talent and treasure for
the benefit of Bishop Kelley this past year. Without
your continued support we would not be able to provide our teachers and
students the learning environment and tools they need to be successful in
academics, athletics and the arts. The infrastructure we’ve been able to
build and sustain on our beautiful campus has provided a setting for three
generations of children to grow here intellectually, physically and spiritually.
My wife, Marellie, and I sent all five of our children to Bishop
Kelley. They each had different talents, personalities and levels
of ability. We were impressed that Bishop Kelley nurtured
each of them so they left Bishop Kelley fully prepared to be
the best they could be as they grew into their adult lives.
Our family has been truly blessed to be a part of the Bishop Kelley
community, and that trend will continue with our grandchildren as many
other families have done since 1960 when Bishop Kelley was founded.
There are many factors that go into making Bishop Kelley the world
class life preparatory school that it is – caring teachers with high academic
standards, administrators, coaches and mentors who greatly care about
our kids, participatory parents and great kids who are eager to learn
and want to be active in a variety of activities that add to their being a
well-rounded person preparing for adulthood. But those many positive
facets would not come together in the same fashion if we didn’t have the
outstanding facilities that have been built over the years on our campus.
In addition to funding our ongoing capital needs, your financial generosity
continues to help us build our endowment. In this year alone, we will
provide over $700,000 in tuition assistance to families in need. As much
as we strive to keep tuition costs down, the truth is, it would be much
higher without the generosity of our many patrons year after year.

We thank you for all you do for Bishop Kelley and ask for your

“I just want to say thank
you,” Jordan said during

back. We have been recognized as a
community that is one of the most
generous communities in the nation.
“I think that’s so important that I

here today where I get to spend the
next year of my life giving back and
trying to make a difference. I think
that comes from being raised in a
place where that is so important.”

Five finalists
fielded two
questions each
at the end
of the pageant. Jordan seemed
to distance herself from some
competitors with her responses.
At the end, she and Miss Texas
Ylianna Guerra were face-to-face
as the last contestants standing.
“I have been around pageants
long enough to know that you
never know,” Jordan said, when
asked about the moment she knew
she had clinched the crown.
“I felt good about my performance.
I felt when I got to move to the end
with Ylianna, Miss Texas USA, I was
very grateful to be standing there
and I thought, in that moment, I
have done everything that I can
do. It’s out of my control now.
And I was proud of my
performance, and I was going to
have no regrets. If they called her
name, I was going to say this just
wasn’t for me and it was her year.
And I’m so grateful that it was
meant for me. I’m grateful it all
worked out. But, no, I did not know
until I heard ‘Oklahoma,’ which is
why my reaction was so intense.”
Jordan, the first Miss Oklahoma
USA to be named Miss USA, said she
didn’t sleep much the night before
the pageant because she was so
excited. She said she slept maybe an
hour the night after she won. She
was whisked to New York (that’s

where she’ll live
during her reign)
immediately
afterward to
begin her duties
and has been on
an introductory
press tour. She
estimated that
she has slept
eight hours
since Sunday, but she sounded
spry by the time a scheduled
interview with hometown media
arrived Wednesday afternoon.
“The energy that comes
from joy is pretty exciting, so
I am surviving,” she said.
Due to a whirlwind schedule,
Jordan said she has not gotten
around to returning hundreds of
congratulatory texts and messages.
She hopes to catch up if she gets
free time over the weekend.
Who was the first person Jordan
called after she became Miss USA?
She got her mother, father and sister
on speakerphone for a group chat.
“They’re my people,” she said.
“They support me. They understand
exactly the process and what
I’ve gone through emotionally
to get here. It’s a lot. You put
everything on the line. You get
my mom and dad are going to, at
some point, FaceTime me and help
do some remote packing for me.”
Miss USA Visits
Bishop Kelley
On Friday, September 25th,
Olivia Jordan '07 visited with
Bishop Kelley students on
campus. She was greeted by
a throng of students eager
to tak a photo with her.
Olivia then stopped by
Speech class to talk about
the skills she learned at
Bishop Kelley and how they
were vital in her ability to
perform in pageants.
After visiting with some of
her former teachers, Olivia
met with the BK musical
cast and spoke about what
it takes to succeed in both
acting and modeling.

entire life and move to New York

it could happen or not happen.”
Jordan said family members are
looking forward to visiting her
in New York and seeing her new
apartment. She’s counting on them
to help fill closets because she didn’t
have time to pack all her belongings.

Setting the Stage
for Success

With a little over
two years under
my belt as a high
school Drama teacher, I eagerly
awaited opening night of the
fall play, "The Good Doctor."
The set was simple: a desk, two
chairs, and a couple of benches.
The light from the two rented
lighting trees played adequately
off the small, portable stage that
was set up in the cafeteria.
My actors had dressed and

and hair in the basketball locker
room and were excitedly awaiting
the start of the show from the
wings… or actually from the
kitchen. Twenty talented high
school actors and technicians
created a night of wonderful
performance that was sometimes
easy for the audience to hear.

2015. We still have talented
performers and technicians,
but the backdrop, which
they now play against,
has greatly improved.

Perhaps the most beautiful
addition to our facility in the
last year is our electric baby
grand piano. We have already
used this amazing instrument
for choir concerts and for last
spring's talent show. Another
boon to choir performances are
the additional choral risers with
safety railings. Studio flats
(standard theatrical wall units)
and new platforms have also
enhanced both "Cinderella" and
"Into the Woods" by enabling
various backdrops and multiple
levels for the performances.
While we are currently in
a great place, more can be
done to take our performances
to the next level.
Our highest priority is the
need to finish
out our lighting
upgrade. The
current lighting
system, while
much improved,
still has several
issues that
prevent us from
effectively
illuminating
the stage.
To address
that need an
additional 32
lighting fixtures are required - 12
for the back catwalk and 20 for
the front catwalk. It is a project
totaling almost $40,000 ($1,200
per fixture) that will enhance
the experience for our techs, our
performers, and our audience.
Sound system upgrades also
remain on the Fine Arts wish
list. The Jazz Choir needs a
new portable sound system to
replace the seven-year-old system
currently in use. This system has
exceeded its life expectancy and
its effectiveness. Just imagine
working on a computer from
2008! Up-to-date technology
will help boost both the sound
quality and ease of use.
This upgrade will include 16
hand-held microphones, a digital
soundboard, and a travel storage
system that will allow for easier
portability as the choir showcases
its talents at
all-school Masses

Reunion Weekend
On June 19 and 20, Bishop
Kelley welcomed back over 500
alumni from the Classes of 1965,
1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990,
1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010
for Reunion Weekend 2015.
Friday night reunion activities
included a reception on campus with
food trucks, wine, beer, snacks, and
campus tours. On Saturday, many
families attended Bishop Kelley Day
at the Tulsa Zoo where they enjoyed
discount admissions tickets, a buffet
lunch, and special animal showings.
In the evening, alumni from all classes
enjoyed a Mass in the Bishop Kelley

Chapel. From there, classes split up to
various venues across town to celebrate
their reunions. The weekend was full
of great memories and great friends!
As 2015 draws to a close, Reunion
Weekend 2016 is on the calendar!
The Classes of 1961, 1966, 1971,
1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996,
2001, 2006, and 2011 will be
celebrating their reunions the weekend
of June 17 and 18, 2016. Mark

commentator Lou
Holtz recently gave a
commencement address at a
Catholic university in Ohio. Holtz
encouraged the new graduates
to be significant by saying,
“Significant is when you help
other people be successful.”
That’s what members of
the Francis G. Kelley Legacy
Society are doing for future
generations of students at Bishop
Kelley. These members have
included Bishop Kelley in their
wills or have made bequests
to benefit students and faculty
many years down the road.
“We wanted to give back to
Bishop Kelley because we have
such a strong appreciation for
the school and its community,”
said David Poarch, who, along
with his wife Carol, have
had three children graduate
from Bishop Kelley.
“Our estate gift will give back to
the school for many generations
after our passing and that’s
exciting to us,” said Carol Poarch,
whose children graduated from
Bishop Kelley in 2009, 2012, and
2015. “While we will continue
to support BK’s annual fund and
other campaigns, we wanted to
leave a legacy gift so that the
school will be strong when our
great-grandchildren and other
generations arrive at Kelley.”
Over the past three years,
about $2M in new planned
gifts have been put in place
by several donors, including
32
alumni, parents of alumni, and
current parents. Most of these
gifts will be directed to BK’s
endowment which, at $6.3M,
provided $250,731 in earnings
income this past school year.
While we’re currently a long way
from it, a $20M endowment,
earning 5%, as an example,
would generate $1,000,000
for our students each year.

and loved ones, you can still
support causes you are passionate
about and create a meaningful
legacy. Bishop Kelley is a part
of a partnership program that
provides a no-cost, confidential

at the spice aisle.
There you may see a face
familiar to many people at
Bishop Kelley: Professional
chef and Bishop Kelley
sophomore Remmi Smith.
Remmi has led a remarkable
life since the day she was
born in China on February 25,
2000. At 10 months old, she
was adopted by her parents
Sam and Nancy Smith and has
lived in Tulsa ever since.
Remmi attended Marquette
Catholic School and joined
her older sister, Dasher, at
Bishop Kelley last year as a
freshman. On the extracurricular
side, Remmi is involved with
BK's Mock Trial Team.
While this would be a great
story in itself, Remmi has
another part to her that has
been simmering inside since
the age of four: Remmi is a
professional chef with her own
cooking show and line of spices.
Remmi has been cutting
vegetables and helping her mom
with dinner since the time she
could talk. At age seven she
could make a complete meal
for her family all by herself.
What started as a cute,
little quirk turned into a
true passion for Remmi. The
idea of turning her love of
cooking into something much

bigger had been brewing in
her head for several years.
In 2009, Remmi, at age
nine, decided to start her own
business which led to the creation
of Cook Time with Remmi
(www.CookTimeWithRemmi.
com). In addition, she will
soon be highlighted weekly
on KTUL's Good Morning
Oklahoma television show.
In addition to her cooking
show, Remmi also sells her own
Italian salad dressing in Tulsa
area grocery stores. In 2013, she
wrote her first cookbook, Global
Cooking for Kids, which features
recipes from every continent.
When asked about her
motivation to start a cooking
show, Remmi will tell you
that it's her love for food
and her desire to combat the
childhood obesity epidemic in
Tulsa and around the world.
In fact, her fight against
childhood obesity led Remmi to
develop the “C.H.E.F Challenge,"
which stands for "Cook Healthy,
Exercise Frequently." This
three-month challenge is open
to kids all over the world who
can participate by eating a
healthier diet, which is key to
reducing childhood obesity.
Remmi's "C.H.E.F. Challenge"
earned her first place in the
national competition, Launch
my Dream. Additionally, she
recently won the Get Started
Tulsa award, a competition
sponsored by Inc. Magazine and
Cox Communications, where
she was chosen from among
75 competitors. She won the
$10,000 grand prize and a
plethora of other prizes.
Between studying for math and
social studies, Remmi is planning
future business ventures to grow
her culinary empire. She plans
to start a new product line of
healthy snack boxes and will
develop new food and culinary
products for retail sales.
As for her own personal
growth, Remmi has her future
mapped out as well. After Bishop

Athletic Storage Facility
Thanks to the supporters of the
2014 Prassa Golf Tournament, BK
has built a new storage facility to
house practice gear, lawn mowers,
and other equipment used to
maintain our campus.
New Gym Floors After
54 years of use, Bishop Kelley
replaced the original floor
in both the large and small
gymnasiums thanks to the
supporters of the BK Auction.
New Sidewalks, Drainage,
Landscaping, Outdoor Lighting,
Outdoor Tables and Seating, and
Security Cameras Using the funds
raised through Believe in Kelley, Bishop
Kelley added new sidewalks, drainage,
and landscaping to improve the aesthetics
of the campus and the safety of our
students.
New Wrestling/ Spirit Squad Complex
Construction has begun on the new Wrestling/ Spirit
Squad Complex. This 10,000+ square foot building is
being constructed next to the Nuding Building on the
south side of the senior/faculty parking lot.
Expanded & Renovated Fieldhouse
Class of 2015 Senior Gift
The Class of 2015
began a new tradition of a Senior Class Gift to Bishop
Kelley. They voted on and decided to fund an inlaid
terrazzo BK in the floor of the main building entrance.

Phase II of “The Championship Drive” involves
the expansion and renovation of the fieldhouse.
The facility includes an additionally 6,500 sq. ft.
of space, including a permanent weight facility,
batting cages, expanded locker rooms, and
coaches’ offices. The facility will be completed
and dedicated on November 20, 2015.

and spending time with loved ones. It offers
