Prison healthcare services are commissioned by:
• The NHS Specialist Commissioning Board - South Region and Bristol, North
Somerset, Somerset & South Gloucestershire local area teams.
Bristol Community Health is classified as an independent sector provider in its registration
under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and subsequent regulations in 2009 and
2010. Its regulated activities across services in each registered location are identified in
our CQC registration certificates and include:
1. Treatment of Disease, Disorder and Injury
2. Diagnostics and Screening
The organisation’s mission is that patients, customers and the community will experience
Bristol Community Health as:
•
•
•
A high quality provider of services recognised for its quality of service from its
patient-focused staff, value for money, innovation and excellence;
A locally cherished organisation with excellent relationships with our community,
patients, customers and partners;
An organisation that is really good to work with and is the natural local partner for
local government, primary care, mental health and acute providers.
The Board’s pledge to staff is that they will experience a Social Enterprise which is:
•
•
•
•
•
Proudly staff-owned, where staff enjoy security, development opportunities, fair
rewards and benefits;
Delivering consistent, personalised care on a daily basis to people in their homes
and communities;
Working with colleagues in other sectors to offer seamless and integrated care to
patients;
An expert at the forefront of training, innovation and delivery in the community;
A sustainable business – here for the long term.
The organisation’s strategy focuses on four themes:
1. Being the best – investing in individual and organisation learning and development,
listening to patients and customers, innovating and managing performance;
2. Time to care – improving efficiency and productivity through technology so that
more time is available to deliver improved quality and quantity of direct patient care
and additional value to patients and commissioners.
3. Managing our money – good financial management securing confidence for the
long term, contributing to staff retention, good commercial relationships, effective
internal management of resources and establish a resilient business capable of
investment.
4. Making their day – delivering and developing the quality strategy, producing
‘Charters’ for Care and Customer Service which set out what patients can expect
from the organisation, supporting communities and growing partnerships.
Our Community Learning Difficulties Teams and Disabled Adult Resource Teams provide

mainstream health services for adults with learning difficulties. The service also provides
direct nursing and therapy assistance to people using the service who are visited in their
own homes or in care homes. A limited service is also offered to children. Examples of
the assistance given to people and to their families include epilepsy management,
management of medication and support when people exhibit behaviours that challenge
others.
For people with a learning difficulty we operate an open referral system to GP-registered
patients, accepting referrals from health and social care professionals, carers and
service users themselves (subject to a service eligibility assessment if required). Our
teams are made up of the following professionals:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Community Nurses
Dieticians
Specialist Intensive Response Nurses
Occupational Therapists
Physiotherapists
Psychologists
Arts Therapists
Speech and Language Therapists
The organisation’s current revenue is £45.6 m with circa 1,100 staff, the majority of whom
are directly involved in patient care in community settings ranging from people’s homes to
our Urgent Care Centre. Our staff are specialist nurse practitioners, community matrons
and nurses, healthcare support workers, GPs with a special interest, consultant
physiotherapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, phlebotomists,
diagnostics and learning difficulties teams combining nursing, therapy and psychology
services. The clinical teams work alongside their management, clerical and
administrative support workers from bases in health centres, clinics and other sites run by
our partner organisations throughout Bristol, Bath and South Gloucestershire.
Healthcare is provided in partnership with others, including Bristol City Council, South
Gloucester Council and fifty-five local GP Practices. The population continues to rise and
projections show this is likely to continue across all age groups; furthermore the ethnic
diversity of Bristol also continues to broaden. Bristol Community Health helps support
local people to maintain healthy lifestyles in a home setting and to overcome illness so far
as is possible outside of hospital care. It continues to develop local services with our
partners to meet identified needs of the communities it serves.
