The flora of Hawick Burgh
The flora of Hawick Burgh by Michael Braithwaite This softback book published by Hawick Archaeological Society in March 2015 is of 64 pages A5 liberally illustrated in full colour with photographs and distribution maps. English names for the wildflowers are shown alongside the Latin names throughout the book. Many of the photographs are by Derrick Moore. After introductory chapters, the body of the book comprises detailed descriptions under habitats of the main features of the town and their history. These include Whitlaw Wood SSSI, the banks of the River Teviot and Slitrig Water, Wilton Lodge Park, two large cemeteries, species-rich grassland to the Toothwort Lathraea squamaria D Moore A speciality of Wilton Lodge Park immediate south of the town, the old railway and urban areas. Amazingly, for an inland Scottish town, 632 species were recorded in 2014, all at 100m scale or finer in an area of 7km2. This has enabled interesting distribution maps to be generated for those species that were recorded intensively. 447 species are mentioned in the habitat descriptions but there is no full species list. __________________________________________________________________________ Order Form for ‘The flora of Hawick Burgh’ at £4 plus £1 post & packing Send to Michael Braithwaite, Clarilaw Farmhouse, Hawick, Roxburghshire, TD9 8PT, phone 01450 372129, email mebraithwaite@btinternet.com I enclose a cheque for £5 payable to Hawick Archaeological Society Name Address .................................................................................................................... .................................................................................................................... ................................................................................................................... . ................................................................................................................... .
