INVITATION TO SUBMIT APPLICATIONS FOR TRAVEL GRANTS: SARIMA/ACU CONFERENCE MAY 2015 Through the generous support of the South African Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Southern African Innovations Support Programme (SAIS) and ESSENCE on Health Research, a global research funders initiative hosted at the Special Programme for Research and Training on Tropical Diseases (TDR) of the World Health Organisation, SARIMA is offering a number of travel grants to support Research and Innovation (R&I) Managers from Southern Africa and other regions in Africa to participate in the 2015 SARIMA Conference from 12-14 May 2015 at the Indaba Hotel and Conference Centre in Johannesburg. SARIMA is partnering with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) to host a conference on Research and Innovation for Global Challenges . Travel grant categories Applications can be submitted in one of four categories: Category 1: Travel grants for R&I Managers from Historically Disadvantaged Institutions (HDIs) in South Africa (funded by DST) Who can apply? R&I managers from HDIs in South Africa, although strong motivations from Historically Disadvantaged Individuals working at other public higher education institutions in South Africa that are not considered to be HDIs could be considered. Maximum grant value R10 000.00 Category 2: Travel grants for R&I Managers from Southern African countries (funded by DST) Who can apply? R&I managers from Southern African countries excluding South Africa as well as Technology Transfer Professionals from SAIS partner countries (Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia). Please note that Research Managers from these countries can apply in this category. Maximum grant value R15 000.00 Category 3: Travel grants for Technology Transfer Professionals from SAIS partner countries (funded by SAIS) Who can apply? Technology Transfer Professionals from the SAIS partner countries, including Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. Maximum grant value R10 000.00 Category 4: Travel grants for delegates from countries in East, West and Central Africa (funded by ESSENCE) Who can apply? Research Managers from universities and other research institutions in East-, West- and Central Africa. Maximum grant value R26 300.00 Grant requirements Travel grant holders will be expected to: Participate in the pre-conference workshop on Research Project Management – The Full Circle on 10 and 11 May. If the travel grant holder is a representative from the East African Research and Innovation Management Association (EARIMA), West African Research and Innovation Management Association (WARIMA) or the Central African Research and Innovation Management Association (CARIMA) they will be expected to participate in the ESSENCE/RIMA engagement in the afternoon of 11 May (and will be excused from the Research Project Management workshop to participate) Participate in the conference from 12-14 May. 2. What will the travel grant cover? Return economy class flight and accommodation up to the maximum specified for each category. Flight and accommodation will only be paid once successful applicants submit a proof of registration for the conference. Conference registration will be funded for successful delegates in Category 4. Arrangements will be communicated to successful applicants. SARS per km rate for travel by car from areas outside of Gauteng (for Category 1 only). Please note that Per diems will not be funded. Please note that a complementary shuttle service is available between the airport and the venue. For this reason no local travel between the airport and the conference venue will be funded. 3. Selection criteria and process SARIMA (Category 1, 2, 4) and SAIS (Category 3) will appoint a selection committee that will review the applications. Successful applicants will be informed about the outcome via e-mail no later than 30 March 2015. Criteria/conditions: No late or incomplete applications will be considered. The applicant’s institution must be prepared to fund the conference registration fee and additional fees related to the attendance of pre-conference workshops. Only applicants with proof of registration will be considered for travel grants. Applicants who submitted an abstract, and especially if such abstract is accepted, will be given preference. Successful applicants will be required to submit a short report on the conference travel. A template will be provided.
