1 April 2015 Contents Commodore’s Corner Race Report Calendar Officers 1 2 4 Blakely Rock Commodore's Corner Ken McKenzie April is bringing some nice weather. I’ve been working on boat projects long overdue. I hope you have also. Check your engine, cooling system, electrical systems, and very important check all of your standing rigging. After all sailboats with poor rigging won’t sail for very long before breaking. We didn’t have a March or April meeting because of a lack of a speaker. Tom our VC is working on that now so I hope to announce a meeting soon. The membership has indicated that meetings are much more fun and better attended with a speaker. Speaking of membership, Nancy our treasure has indicated we have only 10 paid members. The club needs members who pay their dues to keep the kitty full enough to properly function. That being said the dues are as follows: A full membership with the exclusive “Mainsheet” for Catalina owners is $48.00 per year. A full membership without the magazine is $38.00 per year. An associate membership is also available for the same low price of $38.00 per year. All in all, not very much money to belong to a fun group of people, who enjoy sailing and cruising their Catalina sailboats. Send your money to Nancy McKenzie, 11945 80th PL NE Kirkland, WA 98034 care of CAPS and she will make sure you continue to receive your newsletter and Mainsheet if so ordered. June 20th is the date for this year’s “Catalina Regatta”. Nancy needs help in the kitchen if we are going to have any food this year. Barb and Roger will be on a make-‐up cruise with Gordon & Cynthia and will not be available to assist Nancy in preparing our evening vittles. Please consider 2 helping Nancy out, as she cannot do it alone. Our home phone is: (425) 823-‐2849 & her cell is: (206) 200-‐8251. Please give her a call and volunteer to help her out. Further information about the regatta will be available soon, if not already. If you have any questions about this Tom Madden is your contact there. I hope I’ve covered everything here and if not there is lots of information on our website @ CAPSfleet1.com. Thank you all, and happy sailing. Race Report: April, 2015 Tom Madden Race results are in for the first race of the year for our CAPS racing trophy. If you have looked at our website, you will have noticed that there are 4 races set this year: Blakely Rock Benefit Race April 4, 2015 Northwest Catalina Regatta June 20, 2015 Milltown Fall regatta September 12, 2015 Foulweather Bluff Race October 3, 2015 Blakely Rock Benefit Race is now complete, and there were 7 Catalina’s entered, out of 95 boats to actually start the race. Although they were entered in four different classes, all boats sailed the same course, so at least in theory can be scored together using PHRF corrected times. Doing so yields the following results: Place Boat name Skipper Corrected time st 1 Place: Spirit Wind Rod Johnson 2:10:54 2nd place Mata Hari Paul Walchenbach 2:11:30 rd 3 place Sea Trek II Tom Madden 2:12:44 4th place Blue Fin Alan Vogt 2:15:12 th 5 place Sweet Sue II Dave Motter 2:21:29 6th place Scotch and Soda Ken McKenzie 2:26:11 7th place Wandering Star Rick Collins DNF Congratulations to Spirit Wind and Rod Johnson! I know the Mata Hari boat pretty well, and beating them is no easy task. All in all not a bad showing for the Catalina’s entered in the race. The wind blew pretty steadily between about 10 and 15 knots the whole race, and as far as I know nobody ran into the rock or hit other boats. 3 Patricia, a Farr 30 passes us downwind with the city of Seattle in the background. The weather was grand, (no rain) and although it bit on the chilly side, it was a great day to be out on the water. Looking back to the south at all the boats sailing downwind after rounding Blakely Rock. Lots of spinnakers following and catching us, as the reverse start has all the faster boats starting later. Next up: Northwest Catalina Regatta. 4 THE ALL CATALINA ASSOCIATION OF PUGET SOUND 2015 Officers Commodore Ken McKenzie (425) 823-2849 Mckenzie.k@portseattle.org ViceCommodore Tom Madden (206) 382-8308 jenanm@aol.com Treas./Sec.
