He Is Risen! CARY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 8:30 AND 11:00 AM APRIL 5, 2015 614 Griffis Street, Cary, NC 27511 (919) 467-8700 www.carypresbyterian.org A Time for Prayer and Personal Meditation Strip away the perfect lilies…across the chancel steps, the bright reflecting sight and sound of brass, and the white and gold of paraments and stoles…and you are left with a report, some bloodstained bandages in a vacated garden cave, several startled temple guards, a gaggle of bewildered witnesses, and through all this, a dawning hope, so strange yet sure it drives you trembling to your knees, groping for fresh syllables and sounds to shape this ever new, yet ancient cry. The Lord is risen…risen indeed! ORDER OF WORSHIP Upon entering the sanctuary, note the somber mood, due to the absence of light, reminiscent of the stone-cold tomb where the body of the crucified Jesus lay. As the women came to the tomb to anoint the body of their beloved Master, may we come to the tomb with reverence and gratitude for his sacrificial love. Call to Worship Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Unison: This is the day that the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad it! The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone; this is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. For our Lord is risen. He is risen, indeed! Our Lord is risen. He is risen, indeed! Alleluia! Amen! *Processional Hymn Jesus Christ Is Risen Today *Call to Confession Leader: People: Leader: Unison: No. 123 Rev. Miles-Allen In the glorious light of Christ’s resurrection, our sinfulness is exposed. Trusting in the steadfast love of the Lord, let us confess our sin. *Prayer of Confession O God of the empty tomb, we come to this joyful Easter Day focused on the lilies, but do not let us look past or forget the cross. Remind us again of the tomb of death, now empty. Remind us again of Mary's tears of sorrow, now joy. Remind us again of Peter's words of denial, now proclamation. O God of the empty tomb, as you weave extraordinary patterns into our ordinary lives, forgive our complacency and initiative to right the wrongs we see. Forgive our taking for granted your good gifts of creation. Forgive our -2- holding fast to the dark rather than walking in the light of your love. O God of the empty tomb, open us to all the possibilities and promises of life resurrected. Lead us into the light, and make of us a new people in Christ. Amen. *Kyrie Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us No. 572 Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. *Assurance of Pardon and Declaration of Forgiveness Leader: People: Unison: What a day, Easter Day, God's dawn of new hope, new mercy, and new life! Today, all the symbols that marked our journey through Lent and Holy Week have been removed. In their place, we find lilies shaped like trumpets, heralding the good news that the Risen Christ has defeated the powers of sin and death! As an important part of this morning's processional, we will also see a flowered cross, symbolizing the new life which is ours and the world's in Christ Jesus our Lord! Let all God's people joyfully say: "He is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Amen!" -7- WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE LOVELY EASTER FLOWERS GRACING OUR SANCTUARY Given in Loving Memory of: Loved Ones by Tom & Jeanne Bolick Gary Govert, friend, by Mike & Betty Boyd Daniel Cecil Johnson, husband, father, grandfather, by Cathy Johnson, Stephanie & Matt Hancock and Nolan & Jennifer Bryant William & Elsie Dunning and Edwin & Hilda Burke, their parents, by George & Penny Burke Harold & Bettye Martin, Judy’s parents, by Saiid & Judy Davari Mohammad Davari-Nejad, Saiid’s father, by Saiid & Judy Davari Bill & Mozelle Williams, Gwen’s parents, by Yates & Gwen Fletcher Kathy Giesbrecht, daughter, by Peg Giesbrecht Francis Giesbrecht, husband, by Peg Giesbrecht Gary Govert, husband, by Ellen Govert Alice McNeely Herring, mother, by Alex & Kim Herring Their Parents, by Wayne & Fay Honeycutt Joan Malinofski, their daughter-in-law’s mother, by Wayne & Fay Honeycutt Jack Kissiah, husband, by Ellen Kissiah Richard & Mary Lawrick and Rick Lawrick, Greg’s parents and brother, by Greg & Sue Lawrick Jim Sansom, husband, by Donna Long Debra Lowry Johnson, daughter, by Bob & Mary Lou Lowry Paul W.
